That was a truly spectacular 'tache. If only Fasano had caught for him.
Since I missed the heyday of Beck's career, I'll remember him most for this article.
He seemed like a heck of a guy and will be missed.

"The guy with the fu manchu."
People would vote that option?
Sheesh.
When you give people democracy, they respond by doing frustrating
things like, say, voting Hamas into government. Such is
life.

The question is how we remember him, not who he was as a person. It may not please you, but that is, in fact, how I remember Rod Beck. That doesn't mean he wasn't a good pitcher, a good guy, or someone for whom his family grieves. I hope he rests in peace.
This wasn't your run-of-the-mill guy, he was an individual.
The fu manchu was a badge to represent that this guy had a thoughtful personality and some people could identify with him.
He lived in a trailer home and thought nothing of the idea of celebrity. He was a loveable guy and not because he had great stats or enviable success in his career. Or the struggles he went through.
Because he had unique character. Being the guy with the Fu Manchu is the best expression of that on this list.

Exactly. It's all about what the Fu Manchu represents. It's not like we're remembering him for having a physical feature that is simply a feature and nothing else, like a big nose. The Fu Manchu symbolizes Beck's personality and that personality is what people remember.
"This is not a game or an occupation, it's a lifestyle. I was 17 when I first signed. I'm 34 now. That's half my life. So if I give this up, what the hell else am I going to do?"
This part of the article was sad, Rod seemed like such a fun guy.
