No surprise -- it's Aaron out of the NL East. Now, greatest player in the history of the current NL Central teams?
Ernie Banks (CHC) | 6 (4.96%) |
Stan Musial (STL) | 28 (23.14%) |
Pete Rose (CIN) | 21 (17.36%) |
Nolan Ryan (HOU) | 10 (8.26%) |
Honus Wagner (PIT) | 55 (45.45%) |
Robin Yount (MIL) | 1 (0.83%) |

An exercise in versatility!
Do you go with the HOF SS/CF (Yount)? Or the HOF SS/1B (Banks)? Or the HOF OF/1B (Musial)? Or the HOF-quality 1B/2B/3B/LF/RF (Rose, an All-Star at all FIVE positions)?
And still, I almost went with Ryan, but in the end, it was Banks ...
Honus Wagner for me. Most decades have one player who stands head and shoulders above the rest- Wagner for the 1900s, Cobb for the 1910s, Ruth for the 1920s, Mantle for the 50s, Morgan for the 70s, Bonds for the 90s. It looks like it will be Alex Rodriguez for the 2000s.
To me it came down to possibly the best SS ever (Wagner) vs one of the top 10 outfielders ever (Musial).
Rose would be the ultimate utility player, Banks & Yount were great at SS but didn't stay long enough or play well enough to replace Wagner, and Ryan was great but not top 25 pitchers of all time great.
So I went with Wagner. Always take the best ever (#1 in OPS+ for SS) at a position over near the top's at a position.
