Who is currently MLB's best second baseman?
Robinson Cano | 2 (0.89%) |
Mark DeRosa | 1 (0.45%) |
Aaron Hill | 10 (4.46%) |
Kelly Johnson | 1 (0.45%) |
Ian Kinsler | 5 (2.23%) |
Jose Lopez | 0 (0.00%) |
Dan Uggla | 11 (4.91%) |
Chase Utley | 189 (84.38%) |
Rickie Weeks | 0 (0.00%) |
Other (who?) | 5 (2.23%) |
I feel like I'm missing someone incredibly obvious but was distracted by the fact that if B.J. Upton were still an infielder, you could make an argument that the three best 2B in the game today all have last names that start with U (as in Unlikely!) ...
Anyone who votes for Hill, who is nice player, you are an unabashed homer. Not that that's a BAD thing ...
Who else? Placido Polanco? Mark Grudzielanek? Adam Kennedy? Dustin Pedroia? Brian Roberts?
I wonder what Utley's offense would look like if he faced AL pitchers.
I am one of the two (so far) to vote for Kinsler. And per my Hill comment above, yes, it's an unabashed homer vote, as the kid plays his home games two miles from where I am sitting right now.
Terrific glove, above-average range, outstanding arm, excellent leadoff hitter, good-to-great speed with still-developing power ... honestly, he's probably not as good as Utley right now, but he will be. And if they swapped leagues, that wouldn't take real long.
Given Utley's undisputable dominance, a far more interesting question is "Who is currently MLB's second best second baseman?".
I thought Cano was a gimme at the start of the season. Do we need to start testing Dan Uggla's pee?
I will say that Kelly Johnson may be baseball's most underrated second baseman, and perhaps most unlikely as well, having successfully accomplished the rare outfielder-to-middle-infielder conversion.
And there's a nice segue for Magpie the Maven (of Antioch). Who else falls on that list? All I can think of is both members of the Dodgers' middle infield from 30 years ago, Dave Lopes and Bill Russell. Surely there have been others in the intervening three decades.
