Challenge Trade! I'd Rather Have
Glaus | 56 (26.17%) |
Rolen | 158 (73.83%) |
I'd rather have a healthy Rolen than a healthy Glaus. However, from my vantage point, albeit far away from the truth of the matter, Glaus seems to be the healthier of the two, so I'd rather have him.
As was stated by many in the thread, this trade turns entirely on the health of the two players.
I think I'd rather have a healthy Rolen over a healthy Glaus. I think Glaus will perform better over the next two or three years - but perhaps not enough to outweigh the defensive considerations. It remains to be seen how Rolen's defense will stand up over his age 32-34 seasons.
My real opposition to this trade is that I beleive you should manage player movement in such a way to maximize your draft picks. That doesn't mean you never trade someone who may accrue a compensatory draft pick or never sign a player that will cost you a draft pick, but all things equal - as they are close to being in this trade - I'd keep the player who is likely to accrue at least one draft pick next year.
Anyone know how much cash (if any) is coming North of the Border?
It's something to consider, but remember that draft picks aren't for sure. If Glaus had a poor, injury-riddled year, the Jays might not want to risk offering him arbitration in case he accepts. Or if he just has a so-so year and doesn't get any overwhelming deals, he might accept arbitration.

If he doesn't pick up his option, I doubt he accepts arbitration. As for draft picks not being certainties, they're closer than no draft picks at all. That was my point - Glaus and Rolen at health are close to equal commodities. Given that, I'd prefer the chance at two number one draft picks.

A draft pick will not fill the hole left by Glaus at 3rd when he files for free agency after this year. The Jays are thin in the minors, with Ahrens the only player in the system at 3rd that has a chance to make an impact at the Major League Level. He wont be ready for a few years yet. The move will secure the position for a least a couple years untill he is closer. If Rolen is healthy count me in as a beleiver.
I think you are overlooking something important. lets say we keep Glaus, and he walks after 2008, and we get the draft pick(s) you are focused on.
Goodie.
now tell me who plays 3B in Toronto in 2009, and whether the downgrade from Glaus to that guy (Crede for instance) is tolerable in light of having gained the draft pick(s).
And you can't really propose a trade, since by trading for a good 3B you give away young talent closer to the majors than the young talent you will be drafting.
Oh I hope this isn't another Sirotka.
If Rolen is healthy we are in for a treat. His extra D should cover Eckstein's lack (relative to the Prime Minister) and he hits right handers.
Though I might enjoy bashing JP after a few beers, this smells more like Hillenbrandt for Accardo.
...or maybe I just need some sun and vitamin D.
With Glaus, I'm always wishing he'd slow down. Or not bother running at all when he hits a grounder.
