Does it really count when a bat is tossed at a scab umpire?
I don't know which video you watched, but that was no light tossing. An ump could've avoided/caught a light tossing. It may not have been an all out throw, but it was hard enough to break an arm/leg if it hit the wrong way. Bats are made to be hard and inflict impact and damage. There's a good reason you almost never see a player use his bat as a weapon, they all know this. They don't charge the mound with them, they cringe when they accidentally throw them into the crowd. To intentionally throw a bat at someone from that distance (20 -30 feet at most), that's just awful. Suspend Young as long as possible, and hope the idiot advances past the self control of a 10 year old.
Agreed. That was not a light toss at all. He aimed it deliberately at the umpire and threw it relatively hard. There was no arc to the throw.
Delmon's frustrations about replacement umps aside, that behaviour is inexcusable and he should be harshly suspended. The incident also raises an interesting question of whether or not he can really be considered the top prospect in baseball anymore. With this sort of emotional immaturity, I don't think he can.
He aimed it deliberately at the umpire
I watched the video on the St. Pete Times website, so perhaps it was a different view, but the camera was not on Delmon Young when the bat was thrown. By all indications he was walking backwards and in the heat of the moment flinged his bat behind him without looking.
I'll give him 10 games for careless usage of his bat, but no more.
Personally, I'd rather have Alex Gordon, for instance, in the system than Young.
A light tossing. Yeah right. He flat out chucked that at the umpire.
Are you serious, VBF? You should get a better video, he turned around and tossed the thing at the ump very hard.
10 games would be a joke for something like this.
