Okay, Junior Griffey picked up nearly three-quarters of the votes forecasting the 2005 NL Viagra Comeback Player of the Year -- two more JGs are among the six official candidates in the AL. Who will (again, not "should") win?
Jason Giambi | 63 (52.94%) |
Jay Gibbons | 2 (1.68%) |
Roy Halladay | 9 (7.56%) |
Richie Sexson | 15 (12.61%) |
Bob Wickman | 15 (12.61%) |
Barry Zito | 5 (4.20%) |

Its only fitting Giambi should win an award sponsored by a 'performance enhancing drug'
Bobby Jenks. I'm just gonna keep answering that. He has a better future than ...
A: "Jay Gibbons"
Q: Player, other than Sammy, whose OBP has dragged down the Orioles' offense.

PS - Jenks in 2004 had an 8.76 ERA in 12.1 innings at AAA. This season he's at 2.03 ERA in 31 innings for the division-leading White Sox. 38 strikeouts and 12 walks in those 31 innings. Couple saves too (and he might be closing in the playoffs if Dustin's back keeps acting up).
Now that's a Viagra-strength comeback! Boing!

Aaron Small probably qualifies for the more prestigious if less publicized 'Comeback Player of the Decade'
The problem with Jenks and Small is that this isn't a "suddenly got good" award. It's traditionally a "was good then sucked or hurt or something but now good again" award.
That is not the official language on the ballot.

Exactly Mick. What, precisely, has Jenks come back from? In order to "come back", you have to have been there in the first place.
I think Nick Johnson deserves some credit, although Giambi will win it.

We're talking about the 2002 battle for the Yankees 1B job here?
Nick Johnson, of course, is not eligible for the AL Comeback Player of the Year award.
