Let's start behind the plate. Which AL catcher should (not "will") start in the 2007 All-Star Game?
Kenji Johjima | 5 (3.40%) |
Jason Kendall | 3 (2.04%) |
Gerald Laird | 2 (1.36%) |
Victor Martinez | 50 (34.01%) |
Joe Mauer (late edit -- see comments) | 9 (6.12%) |
A.J. Pierzynski | 5 (3.40%) |
Jorge Posada | 59 (40.14%) |
Ivan Rodriguez | 7 (4.76%) |
Jason Varitek | 5 (3.40%) |
Other (who?) | 2 (1.36%) |

I voted Posada. Better defence, and as good a hitter as Martinez. I'd want Posada, Martinez and Rodriguez on the All-Star roster.
I voted for Posada having the best season of a fine career. I'd like Johjima and Martinez to go with him - there's an argument for four AL catchers.
True, Craig. And that's without Varitek, who is a fine catcher having a good year.
This is a philosophical question. Is this a vote for the best catcher, right now, or an assessment of who's had a hot first half?
Joe Mauer. Not listed because he missed some time, but he's Joe Mauer.

I've always believed that "Who should start the All-Star game?" means "Who is the best catcher (or first baseman or whatever) right now?"
Now, with that in mind, how on earth could I forget Joe Mauer? Must take memory test soon and investigate the latest medications for Alzheimers.

Sorry, Mauer was the fourth catcher I was talking about, I hadn't really thought of Varitek or of Pudge.
Like others, I think of it as "who is the best catcher right now" and not "who is having a hot first half". I still think Posada is the guy and not Mauer or Martinez, though Mauer should be on the "ballot", obviously.
I will add Mauer to the ballot -- anyone who wants to change their vote, just shoot me an e-mail (COMN) and tell me who you voted for and I will make the change.
Apologies to Mauer ... not sure how I missed him. He wasn't on the first list of C's with the most ABs in the AL, but I obviously clicked through for guys like Johjima and just missed Mauer, who probably should have won the AL MVP last year.
I didn't know Jason Kendall's mother was a Batter's Box contributor... I can't imagine anyone else voting for him this year.

Don't look at me -- I voted for Gerald Laird.

There are 30 players (who qualify for the batting title) who have a higher slugging % than Kendall's OPS.
