Sorry, Tom Gordon and Joe Borowski, among others, there's only room for the nine candidates listed. Root for "Other," I guess!
Not having probably the best closer in the game on this list is downright criminal. Of course I'm talking about Joe Nathan.
Oh, you're right. I knew just using the list of last year's save leaders would cause me to forget someone ... I will bump someone who doesn';t have any votes yet and put Nathan in his place. So long, Huston Street ....
Picking saves leaders is always a bit of a crap shoot. I like to pick someone proven who plays for a middle level team.
Thus I would go with Rodriguez as my wild guess.

Eric Gagne says "Huh?".

My first thought was "This is a crapshoot." And I don't even know who led the majors last year. I would think that the best candidate would probably be a guy on a good team, but not a great team. If you win a lot of games 7-2, there aren't all that many saves to collect. So I voted for K-Rod.
Who did lead the majors last year. But when you scan the list of the last ten major league save leaders, you will notice only one name appears twice:
Rodriguez, Cordero, Rivera, Gagne, Smoltz, Rivera, Alfonseca, Rivera, Hoffman, Myers.

Strangely enough, I chose Rivera. I don't think that the Yanks will be saving him for the post-season this year.
Veteran Hoffman is my choice. Well established so won't be shifted out, hasn't had too many injuries over the years, is with a solid contender that probably won't blow out people, plus low pressure as who notices anything happening in San Diego? He set the save record and it was a footnote - if Rivera made it there first it would've been national headlines.
When I voted for Ryan I was the 59th vote for him...BUT...not one of the previous 58 had defended their decision...so here goes...using the best sabermetric analysis I could muster I picked Ryan...BECAUSE...wait for it...He's a Blue Jay...and none of the other guys were. And besides, he's so freakin' big if he heard I voted for someone else he might come get me, and I bleed easy.
Is it April yet?
I think Brad Lidge will have good comeback year, if you ask me...
