You've voted on the Cy Young winners (Carpenter and Colon); now, who do you think will win the AL Rookie of the Year? (Again, not who should win, who WILL win?)
Russ Adams | 5 (3.76%) |
Joe Blanton | 5 (3.76%) |
Gustavo Chacin | 44 (33.08%) |
Jonny Gomes | 9 (6.77%) |
Tadahito Iguchi | 14 (10.53%) |
Dan Johnson | 2 (1.50%) |
Chris Shelton | 0 (0.00%) |
Huston Street | 50 (37.59%) |
Chris Young | 1 (0.75%) |

Andy Sisco and King Felix just missed the cut. I believe Joe Mauer is ineligible, but you can always vote for him as the "Other" choice.
If you do vote "Other" please let us know who the mystery rookie is by posting a comment here.

I voted for "other" with the intention of voting for Jhonny Peralta. Upon further review, he not be eligible. If not, then I change my vote to Huston Street.
Looking at the candidates I was surprised how good Jonny Gomes is. 291/387/560 with 19 HR in LF for the D-Rays. I suspect that the fact he plays in Tampa prevents him from winning though as even the crew here hasn't voted for him yet. His low RBI total (43) hurts with the voters too.
I see Street as the likely winner, doing great as the closer for a playoff contender. 1.31 ERA 18 saves 5-1 W-L record, a bit wild (24 BB in 68 IP) but not too much. More K's (he is at 65) would help his cause as voters like the K an inning standard I suspect.
Chacin is popular here, and should get the most votes for a starter due to his W-L record (12-8) being better than Blanton's (8-11) despite a slightly higher ERA (3.65 vs 3.51). Voters like the wins, but starters need at least 15 wins to be noticed or an ERA below 3 or crazy K numbers (ie: well over 1 per inning).
Btw, is Oakland scary or what. They have Hudson Street closing, Blanton starting, Swisher in the OF (17 HR 237/319/436), Johnson at 1B (294/374/475). That is 4 rookies in key roles doing great (well, 3 great 1 OK). Nice rebuilding effort I'd say.
The Jays, by comparison, have Chacin in the rotation, plus McGowen (7.93 ERA) and League (7.82 ERA) and Marcum (1 IP). Hitting we have Adams (272/343/416) and Hill (275/334/397) plus Gross (222/286/267), Quiroz (0 for 10), and Griffen (1 for 1 with a double - highest Slg% of all rookies at 2k).
Thus the Jays have a starting pitcher, and two everyday players starting this season while the A's have a starter, a closer, plus 2 everyday players. Kind of puts the lie to the 'too many rookies keep you from competing' argument eh?

I like Johny Gomes alot. he is a heck of a player who gives the Yankees fits. In fact, i think a round of applause should go out to the Devil Rays. They are playing, and i can't believe i am saying this, fun baseball to watch.
I voted for Iguchi, even though i don;t think he should win. I think voters will look at him being on the White Sox and choose him for that. I would vote for Street and Chacin over him.

I thought Robinson Cano would be on this list.
I still wouldn't have voted for him, but I thought he would be on this list. :)

Of course, if I could choose one player from this year's crop, it would be King Felix by a country mile. Not since Clemens and Gooden have I been this enthralled by a pitcher.
