Notes

All nine Dunedin batters showed off their plate discipline once by drawing at least a walk, eight of them had at least two, contributing to a team total of 22. The free pass leaders were JR Freethy and Sam Shaw with four apiece with the former scoring four of the seven runs between them at the top of the order. Freethy also added two doubles. Tucker Toman tripled and walked thrice while driving in four runs. Yeuni Munoz homered, doubled and drove in five runs while walking twice. Trey Yesavage surrendered two unearned runs in his pro debut over 3-2/3 innings, walking six and whiffing four. Gage Stanifer got the win with four shutout innings while fanning six.

The Fisher Cats were limited to four hits, including a Yohendrick Pinango homer. Charles McAddo singled and stole a base. Anders Tolhurst allowed just one run over five frames, scattering two hits and two walks while sitting down seven batters with strike three. Ryan Jennings and Johnathan Lavalle had scoreless outings. Alex Amalfi suffered the loss in 1-1/3 innings.

Connor O'Halloran gave up just one run and punched out four hitters over four innings but took the loss. Irv Carter had a night to forget by giving up three homers, including an inside-the-parker. Nate Garkow was gonged for three runs in his inning of work. Jay Harry had two hits. Aaron Parker had a double. Arjun Nimmala had a hit to reach base in all five games so far with Vancouver.

Noted in yesterday's thread but still feel it's really interesting that Tolhurst was moved into the rotation given his injury history and lack of innings. Given they probably don't want to see him at more than 90 innings, I'm wondering if it's short-term (I think many of the Vancouver starters will be capable of graduating quite quickly).

Through their first turns in the rotation, none of the Dunedin starters have given up an earned run (with only Holcombe left to debut). Vancouver a similar story; only 1 ER from starters through the first 4 games.

On our farm 1 game for a SP is worth 1 week of pitching. However they are on a pitch count to start off. I assume our older Dunedin SPs like Stephen and Yesavage can increase their pitch count. Maybe even Stanifer. Cates was effective. Holcombe starts tonight and was V good last year.A few more good starts from these 5 and some promotions can occur.

If some of the Dunedin staff gets promoted then Dunedin could be short SPs. We will see.

Jake Bloss is having a tough time, he gave up four runs in the second inning. There was an error in there but also four hits.

Bloss got through 4.2 innings with just the four runs allowed. He was wild with almost the same number as balls as strikes. He walked four and struck out two.

Tolhurst has a very similar build to Easton Lucas although he's a little more muscular so they probably see some similarities despite him being right-handed. Tolhurst wasn't overpowering but he worked all 4 quadrants and changed speeds well. The broadcast mentioned 95 mph but that was likely the stadium gun so probably more like 93. If he keeps pitching well, you'll probably see him make 5-6 starts and then jump up to AAA.

Harrison still screams reliever to me. His stuff just doesn't pop (He lacks a true out-pitch) but he was around the strike zone with 21 called strikes, 15 fouls and 11 whiffs in just 5 innings. Broadcast noted 93 mph in the cold conditions, which was likely closer to 91 mph.

One big sleeper to keep an eye on is 2024 undrafted FA Javan Coleman. He was a 2023 draftee of the Dodgers who went back to college for his senior year. The Jays are obsessed with former Dodgers prospects/targets. Tonight, his heater was 91-96 mph from the left side... but his slider and changeup were even better. On 10 swings off those offerings, he got 6 whiffs, 3 fouls and just 1 ball in play. He's a guy I'd aggressively push.

Thanks Marc, appreciate the context on Tolhurst.

Holcombe was only throwing fastballs tonight. Wonder if he just had zero feel for a breaking ball.

It's concerning how often Bloss gets shelled.

Pinto, Nimmala, and Keys making for a great top of the lineup in Vancouver.

Duran with a HR. He had 0 HRs in 327 PA. Toman with another nice night, let's hope he can keep it up.

My plan is to go back and watch Holcombe... my gut tells me Statcast was having issues identifying his pitches - there's no way the development guys would allow a college-age pitcher to transition from reliever to starter while leaving him in low-A and then let him throw that many heaters (86%). Plus the range in speed was 87-97 mph. That's not normal.

I don't think he threw a cutter last year so I wonder if that's what was being missed - some not-so-great cutters that he's working on.

I also want to watch Toman more closely. He seems to have changed his approach to favor contact over power.

Duran hits the ball consistently hard but he has zero loft in his swing.

That makes more sense on Holcombe. Sadly life's been a bit busy so haven't had the time to watch the starts so far this year.

Estrada, Van Eyk, Rogers going today. I saw someone asking about Rogers in a BA chat now too. I know you're not high on him, just interesting seeing his name pop up a lot more between FG mentions and BA.

They made a switch with Toman last year the team was excited about but it was late in the year. He's off to a good start so maybe there's something there?
