NOTES

Jackson Wentworth was the Jays fifth round selection in the 2024 draft. It is interesting that the Jays round one and two pitcher picks are in Dunedin while the round five pick is above them in Vancouver. Why did the Jays decide to move him higher? Was it performance related or could it be because Wentworth has already had Tommy John surgery and so there might be a limited number of pitches in his arm?

In any event Wentworth justified his assignment with five shutout innings with six strikeouts.

The top three in the Vancouver order had seven hits between them. Adrian Pinto doubled, singled and walked. He could find himself in New Hampshire soon, assuming he stays healthy. Arjun Nimmala went 3-5 and Victor Arias 2-4. Cutter Coffey homered but struck out three times.

Jaden Rudd was the hero for Dunedin, he had a pair of two run doubles.

Sam Shaw, with his hot dogs and donut diet, singled again and walked in four at-bats.

Tucker Toman was 2-3 and was hit by a pitch. He had the top exit velocity in the game at 104 mph.

I like looking at Statcast when I can for pitchers. Daniel Guerra started and threw four innings just allowing an unearned run. He had one whiff. He was followed by Gilberto Batista, who came over in the Danny Jansen trade. Batista picked up nine whiffs in his four innings. Guerra struck out four, Batista six. Guerra relied on his 4 seam fastball, throwing it 76% of the time. Batista mixed his pitches, his slider was his most used pitch. The hardest thrower was closer Colby Martin who got it up to 98.5 and averaged 97.3.

Cuban pitcher Cristhian Duarte (17) has officially signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. Bonus deal: $150,000.

Cristhian arrived in the Dominican Republic in 2023.

He becomes the 22nd Cuban-born player to sign during the current 2024-2025 international period.

Originally from Havana, he boasts a strong pitch mix:

Fastball: 92–93 MPH
Slider: 81–83 MPH
Changeup: 84 MPH
Sinker: 88–89 MPH

Wentworth is from Iowa so his cold weather history probably helps, but he also has very good secondary stuff and would be too much for low-A. The knock on him was his fastball, which was hittable as an amateur. He was up to 97 mph on the stadium gun yesterday which probably means about 95 mph (stadium guns are almost always hot). I watched him pitch and was very impressed; he's now firmly on my radar.

Austin Cates started for Dunedin today. He's not a future starter in the upper minors. FB is 89-92 (touch 93). Best pitch is a change. Also has a slider. Didn't throw many pitches through 5 because he was around the strike zone so much (but it was a lot of loud contact).

Guerra stands 6-6 and has easy 95-96 mph velo. No real secondary offering. He's a future reliever.

I really like Batista's secondary stuff but the fastball is a big question mark. It can hit 94 mph right now but it's not overly effective.

Rafael Sanchez is looking good in New Hampshire today. He's always had good secondary stuff but his FB used to be a real weakness. No velo readings today but it looks better.

I'll also add that I don't buy Sam Shaw as a second baseman. Not sure whose idea it was to move him to the infield... He physically reminds me of Davis Schneider now - short legs, more barrel-chested. He doesn't have infielder hands or the necessary athleticism - I saw him mishandle two balls and neither one was an overly difficult play. His offseason of adding bulk was a questionable move as he probably couldn't play CF anymore, either.

Aside from Edward Duran, a possible defense-first MLB back-up, there is not a single interesting position player with even MLB platoon potential. Brock Tibbits would be the next most interesting player but he doesn't square up the ball well.

Thanks for the insight Marc. Let's hope Wentworth is a nice development story.
