New Hampshire won its first game in a week. They scored five runs, three with sac flies and one with a wild pitch. But a win is a win. Buffalo also won with Alan Roden going deep. Vancouver had a travel day, their playoff series resumes Friday.

NOTES

Alan Roden drove in two of Buffalo's three runs. In the sixth he singled to score Jonatan Clse. In the eighth he homered to give the Bisons the lead. It was his eight home run. Roden and Phil Clarke had two hits. Bo Bichette was 1-3 and played seven innings. I assume he will play tomorrow for his first back to back rehab games.

Paolo Espino pitched six innings and gave up two solo home runs. Brandon Eisert pitched the last two innings for the save.

New Hampshire got on the board in the first inning. Eddinson Paulino lead off with a double and scored on a sac fly by RJ Schreck. They added two in the sixth. Schreck walked and Rainer Nunez doubled him in. Gabriel Martinez later scored Nunez with a sac fly. Two more runs in the eighth clinched the win. Ryan McCarty and Nunez singled and Yohendrick Pinango walked to load the bases. Martinez hit his second sac fly of the game and a wild pitch scored the fifth run. Nunez was 3-3, Paulino 2-5. The Fisher Cats had six hits, five between the first and fourth hitters in the lineup. They did well to score five runs.

Devereaux Harrison went six innings. He gave up two runs on four hits and three walks.

Roden is very interesting - in AA this year he hit 267/373/432 over 206 AB's, but in AAA 318/405/507 over 223 AB's. Love when guys improve their stats as they climb, always a good sign. Just listened to the interview by Mike Wilner on his podcast with Roden & Kasevich (at the 1 hour mark) from last week. Yeah, I'm a bit behind on these, but dang if those 2 weren't fun to listen to - Kasevich & Roden that is. Hopefully the two of them make it up here as they clearly are a team and have a lot of fun together ala Bo & Vlad.

Here's a truly weird life imitates art. Remember the scene in Bull Durham when Crash Davis tipped the batter to Nuke LaLoosh'es fastball?

Twins just released their 2024 6th round pick (taken right after the Jays took Aaron Parker). He was catching in the Florida State League and spent an inning tipping pitches to the opposing team. Why? If the Twins lost the game, they would eliminated from the playoffs. He told his teammates he just wanted the season to be over. He got his wish - his team lost 6-0, with 4 of the runs scoring in that inning. Season over, and in all probability, career over. Still gets to keep his bonus though.

@John - Roden also started the year trying to adapt to significant mechanical changes. He was on a heater in AA before the promotion and has continued ever since. It's a shame he won't get a look, there's a non-zero chance he'll be better than our current LF options.

I suspect since Roden doesn't need to be added to the 40 man until after 2025 (according to FanGraphs) the Jays feel it is best to leave him down for now and not start the clock on his 3 options. Still, won't be surprised if he earns that promotion by June of next season. I expect they'll give LF first to Loperfido & Schneider with Clase getting a real shot at it too - all are on the roster and have their option clocks ticking. Berroa & Lukes are 'just' backups right now, not seen as likely regulars (just like Luis De Los Santos).

John don't use FanGraphs - use MarcGraphs - for your Jays' specific minor league info needs!

I see Roden as a potential leadoff hitter. Love Horwitz' on base skills but he's slow. Roden has 14 SB and is playing OF so I am assuming at least average speed. If you have guys getting on base all the time, you don't need quite as much power. Again though, Jays have too many AAA/Majors OFers and need to move one or two. Roden is the guy I'd most bet on though. Think he'd help the team a fair bit right now but I wouldn't use a 40 man spot to get him up for 2 weeks either. Interestingly, of the top-21 OBP guys in the international league with at least 200 PAs, Jays have #2, #12, #19, and #21. Something, they obviously (and should) value.

Any opinions on Van Eyk?

The negatives are that he was injured a lot and will turn 26 this weekend. The positives are 93IP this year all in AA. He pitched many 5-6 inning games. A V bad game now and then made his numbers ugly. He tired Aug & Sept so he became a 1 inning pitcher and did V well. I expect him to go back to starting next year. He may even start in AAA.

I know Keegan talked up Van Eyk in the spring because he was up from touching 93 to 95 mph but when I saw him pitch, the heater was straight as an arrow. And his command isn't great. For me, he's a reliever but a low ceiling one.

marc i don't see it on your spreadsheet there.....but do you have an Options breakdown for or borderline youngish guys?

specifically Barger/Schneider/Loperfido?
Kelekin - Friday, September 13 2024 @ 02:28 PM EDT (#452532) #
Agreed Glevin. I think Roden/Horwitz/Vladdy could be potent against righties. But, we're probably getting Springer in the leadoff spot because, reasons.

I thought Jon Harris had the straightest FB I’d ever see until I saw Van Eyk pitch. So, no love.

On my spreadsheet, if you look at the Toronto MLB tab, there are milb option totals for the players on the major league roster. You just have to subtract one of a player has been sent down this year (Clement, Barger, etc) as I haven't updated for 2024 yet (since it could still change).
