Notes

James Kaprelian was whacked for three home runs and seven runs in total over two innings with three of the runs being unearned. His game WHIP was five thanks to eight hits and two walks but he struck out three. Paxton Schultz struck out three in 3-2/3 shutout innings, Braydon Fisher got the next four outs, three of them Ks. José Cuas and Eric Pardinho had shutout frames with Pardinho fanning two. Alan Rodem had a two-hit night that included a two-run double and drew a walk.Jonatan Clase had a hit and a walk. Josh Kasevich and Will Robertson also had base knocks.

Ryan McCarty and Charles McAdoo had three-hit nights with McAdoo homering.and adding two doubles in the completion of an earlier game this season. Alex De Jesús and Michael Turconi had two hits with De Jesús' two-run homer in the ninth to score Turconi being the difference. Josh Kasevich also had a double in this game. Johnathan Lavallee pitched a shutout ninth and struck out two to offset a walk. Adrian Hernández was the winning pitcher despite giving up four runs over two innings.

Turconi capped off the Fisher Cats doubleheader sweep with a three-run homer. RJ Schreck drove in the other two runs, including an RBI double. Schreck was hit by a pitch and so was Dasan Brown who had a triple and stolen base on the night. Ryan McCarty, Josh Rivera and Robert Brooks all had a knock and a walk. Abdiel Mendoza was the winning hurler with five innings of one-run ball with four hits and two walks allowed. He struck out three and got five outs on the ground. Ryan Jennings struck out one in a perfect sixth and Anders Tolhurst worked a one-hit seventh that saw him strike out the side.

Cutter Coffey cracked his first home run as a member of the Blue Jays organization and added a single. Jace Bohrofen did not get a triple but had the other parts of the cycle. He doubled home a run and brought home two more with a home run that bounced on top of the center field wall before going into the parking lot. Peyton Williams also put one over the wall in right field for a two-run shot. Je'Von Ward had a two-hit night. Ryan Watson put in a quality start of two runs allowed over six innings despite nine hits and a walk. He struck out four and recorded seven outs on the dirt. Grayson Thurman struck out three and stranded a runner for Watson over 1-1/3 innings. Kai Peterson punched out two to end a perfect ninth.

RBI doubles by Arjun Nimmala and Aaron Parker got the D-Jays rolling in the first inning. Nimmala later added an RBI single as part of a four-hit night. Yhoangel Apontel had a run-scoring triple and Edward Duran scored two more with a base hit. Aponte and Parker also had a base on balls. Nick Mitchell had a triple and a single and Brock Tibbets was on base three times with two hits and a walk. Gage Stanifer gave up two runs over 4-1/3 innings on two hits and three walks with six punchouts. JJ Sánchez was the winning pitcher with 2-1/3 innings of one-run ball with three Ks. Yondrei Rojas stranded two runners for Sánchez and gave up a one over two-thirds of an inning. Julio Ortiz stranded two Rojas runners and struck out three over 1-2/3 innings for the save.

Franklin Rojas had three hits, including a double and two RBI, and Pascual Archila had a double among his two hits. Jarold Montealto drove in three runs without a hit, drawing two bases-loaded walks and bringing home another with a ground ball. Silvano Hechavarria shone again on the slope with five shutout innings, scattering two hits and two walks while punching out six. Carlos Abad walked two but whiffed four over 1-2/3 shutout innings.

Peyton Williams started the year injured but has done a really good job since coming back. A bit old for the level, but a great fielder for someone his size and plenty of power. He now has a .928 OPS against righties (he's surprisingly had 1/3 of his PAs against lefties).

Some other interesting OPS numbers against RHP:

Lukes (AAA) - .958
Tirotta (AAA) - .888
Schreck (AA) - .934
Ward (A+) - .856

Wagner had a .916 and Horwitz a .942 prior to their call-ups.

Roden's last 4 games in July with Buffalo 11AB, 6H 4bb 1K. Then Aug was also good .357Avg, 9 of 20 extra base hits 3HR, 7bb & 9K. I think his D is ok.

Kasevich makes very good contact but no real power, low bb & K and some SBs. His D is supposed to be outstanding. I don't know where he should be in the lineup.
Glevin - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 09:12 AM EDT (#451630) #
Bohrofen has a an OPS over 1 in August. De Jesus has one just under in same time period. Both are fringe prospects right now but if hot streaks can continue, they can move themselves into a better position. Kasevich is a decent bet to be a major leaguer but not very exciting. Adam Frazier kind of player if things go right.

My quick top-10 prospects right now.

Tier 1-Everyday player, rotation piece. Possibility of more.
1-Nimmala
2-Orelvis
3-Bloss
4-Yesavage
5-Tiedemann

Tier 2 Potential at everyday player, pitcher excellent bullpen/back-end starter sort.
6-Clase
7-McAdoo
8-Roden
9-Macko

Tier 3- Starting pitching "prospects" well away from majors but who could be interesting.
10-Bunch of far-off starters here at same level for me: King, Barreira, Rojas, etc...

Kasevich is basically Ernie Clement with less power. Roden is essentially Will Wagner but in the outfield.
uglyone - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 12:03 PM EDT (#451637) #
I don't really see it for Kasevich unless he can be a plus defensive SS, and even then i'd be surprised if he could be more than a bench IF.
metafour - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 12:16 PM EDT (#451639) #
Kasevich hits the ball much harder than Clement does on average, but he hits for less power because he has comically low flyball rates and pull rates. His profile is basically groundball-dominant, and opposite field-dominant...aka the worst combo for power hitting.

Clement actually hit for even less power than Kasevich did in the minors, and showed a similar inability to lift the ball, but he has unlocked some added juice at the MLB level.
Ducey - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 12:22 PM EDT (#451640) #
I dunno.

I can see Kasevich having an OPS of 700+ in MLB pretty easily.

There are currently 13 everyday SS in MLB that have an OPS above 700. (Leo is at .714 but would not qualify).

He is supposed to be quite good defensively and a character guy. And he is only 23 so could develop some more power.

I would not write him off. A good SS that can have good at bats and get on base is of value.
Nigel - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 01:20 PM EDT (#451643) #
Kasevich played both SS and 3B in Vancouver. FWIW I thought he would be at least an average defender at SS and potentially an above average defender at 3B (his first reaction quickness is really strong). I'm surprised to hear that his exit velocities are decent because they were comically awful in my viewings. I'd be really surprised if he could be a league average hitter in the majors but I think he could be a back up INF. I think Jimenez has a better chance to be a regular than Kasevich.
Glevin - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 01:59 PM EDT (#451644) #
Hard to see how Kasevich becomes a regular unless something changes in his game (he's 23 so it's possible) . His minor league stats are pretty weird in that at every level he has been a 99-103 WRC+ hitter but guys who don't have power and also don't walk have a hard time having major league careers. There are maybe a handful of regulars in the entire league like that.
GabrielSyme - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#451647) #
We have some statcast data in AAA, and although Kasevich only has 39 balls in play, he has an impressive 91.2 average exit velocity, with a very respectable maximum of 109.0 - a GIDP, as it happens, but still. So, yes, Kasevich's fundamental batted-ball metrics suggest there's some modest power there if he's able to lift the ball. Ernie Clement with the Jays this year has a decent maximum of 109.4, but an average of 85.7, which is 5th percentile.

I've pulled the statcast data for all our interesting AAA players, and here it is: balls in play, average, maximum:

Kasevich, 39, 91.2, 109.0
Robertson, 204, 91.2, 112.8
De Los Santos, 69, 91.2, 112.2
Loperfido, 109, 90.8, 113.9
Addison Barger, 152, 90.2, 113.2
Palmegiani, 236, 90.1, 112.5
Orelvis Martinez, 171, 90.0, 115.2
Horwitz, 170, 89.6, 108.9
Lukes, 154, 89.2, 108.5
Alan Roden, 121, 88.9, 112.2
Will Wagner, 246, 88.6, 110.8
Leo Jiménez, 146, 88.3, 109.0
Tirotta, 148, 87.8, 110.4
Clase, 200, 87.6, 110.0
Berroa, 142, 86.3, 107.2
Raposo, 159, 85.8, 108.0
Phil Clarke, 87, 82.8, 101.4

For comparison, the 50th percentile among qualified MLB hitters is 110.9 (of course most if not all such hitters have more batted balls than those listed above, so more opportunities to get a maximum EV). So a lot of these guys have pretty strong exit velocities, including Roden and De Los Santos, who have not been regarded, as far as I know, as power hitters coming up.
scottt - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 02:43 PM EDT (#451648) #
I would think it's easier for a guy who doesn't walk to hit in the MLB than a guy who does because the latter depends on the umpire making the right calls.We've seen with Biggio that just walking and having a good eye is not enough.

At 23 Clement was hitting .263 in AA with 1 HR, 15 doubles, and 3 triples.Kasevich has done a bit better than that hitting .284 with 3 HR and 20 doubles in 74 fewer PAs.Kasevich is 2 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier.
bpoz - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#451649) #
Kasevich as a leadoff hitter is probably not good. With a runner on 2nd or 3rd a single would score the runner from 3rd but maybe not the guy on 2nd. I think back in the 80s there was a guy that hit a lot of singles and I think won batting titles.
Glevin - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 03:08 PM EDT (#451651) #
FYI, Groshans has an average exit velocity of 92.6.
Ducey - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 03:11 PM EDT (#451652) #
"We've seen with Biggio that just walking and having a good eye is not enough."

Biggio's problem (besides being unemployed) is that he is too passive. He is not willing to battle with 2 strikes and so gets rung up regularly.

Horwitz has a good eye, but also battles with 2 strikes until he either gets something to hit or an obvious ball.

BTW, the guy the Jays go back for Cavan - Braydon Fisher has good ERA's in AA and AAA for the Jays (although too many walks - somewhat ironically given who he was traded for).
uglyone - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 04:12 PM EDT (#451656) #
It's hard to find any prospect who's had as little ISO power as Kasevich has shown so far....though Clement would be one of them.

by age 23 (both started in A at 21 and made it up to AAA at 23):

* Clement 1108pa, 6.8b%, 7.3k%, .299bip, .279avg, .072iso, 101wrc+
* Kasevich 949pa, 8.0b%, 10.2k%, .310bip, .285avg, .080iso, 101wrc+

Clement does seem to be a reasonable upside comp, but remember Clement is 28yrs old with only a career 79wrc+ in 680 career pa.

And Clement only became a viable contender for MLB duty after he started showing some reasonable pop - in the 3yrs since those stats above (i.e. post-covid), Clement put up this line in Milb:

* Clement 552pa, 7.4b%, 8.9k%, .308bip, .303avg, .181iso, 113wrc+

Kasevich is gonna have to show a similarly large bump in power to become a viable part-time MLBer like Clement, imo.
Nigel - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 05:08 PM EDT (#451661) #
uo - I think that summarizes things exactly. The current permutation of Kasevich is a very fringy prospect. His age and those exit velocities give him a chance though (along with the defence).
John Northey - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 07:13 PM EDT (#451669) #
Clement & Kasevich being so close at Kasevich's current age is a good thing - teams need guys who can be half decent backups to be sitting in AAA ready to go when needed. Not every prospect can be a star, you need those fill-ins too. Helps a lot mid-season to avoid trading for DeJong type guys (he seemed a decent risk to take tbh, a guy who once looked like a star who fell, has a 101 OPS+ this year but just a 3-44 period here).

Another HR for Nimmala.
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 08:07 PM EDT (#451675) #
With Votto hanging up his cleats, the Jays should immediately move up Rainer Nunez to AAA and Peyton Williams to AA. Time to see what they can do at the higher levels especially with Nunez due for milb free agency.

how big is the current active Bisons roster anyways?

* CF Clase
* RF Lukes
* LF Roden
* 3B Palmegiani
* SS Kasevich
* 2B DeLosSantos
* 1B Tirotta
* C Raposo
* DH Clarke

* IF Lantigua
* OF Robertson
* C McDowell

* C Henry (Injured)

that's it I guess?

yeah i agree Nunez would good to get a look at even if he hasn't completely earned a promotion.

Glevin - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 10:20 PM EDT (#451680) #
Nimmala first half OPS.586. Second half, .928. Mitchell is off to a really nice start which is a bit surprising given his college numbers.
Kelekin - Wednesday, August 21 2024 @ 10:25 PM EDT (#451682) #
Agreed Marc. Williams needs to be in AA, and Nunez has had a .752 or higher OPS in every month other than April (I believe his OPS is close to .800 from May onwards). It's time.
Shoeless Joe - Thursday, August 22 2024 @ 09:23 AM EDT (#451686) #
You like the overall results for Nimmala but you have to be still be very worried about the strikeouts.

As aside I liked most of the deadline deals except for the Danny Jansen trade. That seems like bit of a bust, and I like Schreck in the turner trade better than the return for Jansen.

The worst thing that happened was the injuries to our best young pitchers. Tiedemann could make the Jays sometime in 2026. I don't know about Barriera and Maroudis. Barriera 22IP so far won't be back until halfway into his 4th season as a pro. I don't know the nature of Macko's injury. He has never pitched 100 innings in a season. Hope it is not serious and I don't mind him becoming a 1 inning reliever or a 2-3 inning reliever.
Glevin - Thursday, August 22 2024 @ 09:54 AM EDT (#451690) #
Wonder if Bloss is coming up to pitch a few innings tonight. Jays have it as TBD but it's Bloss's turn in rotation in Buffalo. Jays are limiting his innings so having him go 4 and then Yarbough go 2-3 gets you mostly through the game. suddenly, it looks like Jays have pretty good pitching depth for next year. Gausman, Bassit, Berrios, Rodriguez, Francis, and Bloss. They need a front of the rotation guy though and I don't think they can afford to spend any more on the rotation.

I am not worried about Nimmala's strikeouts. He will probably always strikeout and probably not be a high average guy because of that but he's the youngest player in the Florida State League and for players with 300+ PAs he's 7th in WRC+ and he's just getting better so even as he is, he's a great prospect but because of his age, there is a lot of room for growth. Even if he goes on this same path an everyday SS with power and Ks, that's someone like Willy Adames, Jose Valentin, or Trevor Story. That's a valuable player.
92-93 - Thursday, August 22 2024 @ 12:00 PM EDT (#451693) #
Unfortunately Mike Shapiro isn't a GM, Shoeless Joe. Playoff teams tend to be set at catcher, so it's hard to get much for a guy not hitting. The only other team that maybe could have used him is Cleveland.

I'm still surprised the Jays couldn't come to terms on an extension with him.

always worry about strikeouts, but not as much as long as Walks and Power come along with them.
