Buffalo Bisons

The Buffalo Bisons could only muster a Luis De Los Santos solo homer in a 3-1 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday.

The Bisons were 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left four on base.

The Rail Riders tied it in the fourth when Jasson Domínguez’s home run made it 1-1. They used single runs in the 5th and 8th to get the win.

The Bisons’ Trenton Wallace (0-0 6.14ERA) will be on the bump in Thursday’s matchup against the Rail Riders Edgar Barclay (5-9 6.29 ERA) Game time is 6:35PM EDT.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats got a run in the top of the first but the Reading Fightin Phils still managed to win this game 5-4.

A four run third inning capped off by a Trevor Schwecke double that scored Carson Taylor and Otto Kemp proved to be the difference in this one.

The Fisher Cats would tie it at 4 with a three run sixth but couldn’t solve Reading’s pitching the rest of the way. The Cats were also 2-12 with Runners in scoring position and left seven on base.

The Fisher Cats starter for Thursday is TBD. Game time is 6:35PM ET.

Vancouver Canadians

The Vancouver Canadian enter their most critical six games of this season with a chance to catch the Spokane Chiefs for top spot in the second half of Northwest League play.

The Canadians trailed the Chiefs by two games heading into Wednesday night’s game with a chance to close that gap.

It was the Spokane Chiefs however who would win this game 3-0.

The Chief’s Dyan Jorge broke the 0-0 deadlock in the fifth when his sacrifice fly scored GJ Hill.

GJ Hill would hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 2-0 and another run would be added in the bottom of the eight to make it 3-0.

Thursday’s game sees Mississauga, ON native Connor O’Halloran on the mound for the C’s. Game time is 6:35pm.

Dunedin Blue Jays

The Dunedin Blue Jays trailed 4-0 in this one after five innings but scored three in the sixth and four in the seventh to win 7-4 against The Bradenton Marauders Wednesday.

Solo home runs by Arjun Nimmala and Aaron Parker made it 4-2 Bradenton in the sixth with Dunedin adding another before the end of that inning to make it 4-3.

Nimmala would smash an RBI double in the seventh to score Braden Barry and J.R. Freethy to make it 5-4 for the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays would add two more in this inning and shut down the Mauraders.

Thursday’s game starts at 6:30 PM ET with Dunedin sending Daniel Guerra to the mound against the Maurader’s Khristian Curtis.

McAdoo is having a good night for NH so far. 1/1 with two walks and a SB (#6).

Nimmala is 1/5 with a double and 3 strikeouts for Dunedin.

FYI: FanGraphs has their prospects Future Value and stuff all updated (thus new guys with the Jays now).
  • 50 FV: All in the 90's of the top 100: Bloss, Orelvis Martinez, Tiedemann
  • 45's: 7 guys including Barger, Jimenez, Yesavage, Brock, Macko, Kasevich, and Barriera.
  • 42 total 35+ or higher vs 39 pre-season.
  • Wagner #30 with a 35+, Jonatan Clase at #23 with a 40.
  • Arjun Nimmala at #13 (???) with a 40+ and a down arrow (?????????) Boy does this one make me question their system big time. A 120 wRC+ in A at 18, a 176 in the complex league. What were they expecting? A 200? To be in A+ at 18? Tiedemann going down makes 100% sense, but Nimmala? They have Orelvis steady despite the PED suspension.
A good reminder of why I enjoy going through these lists but know not to put a ton of strength on them.

It simply isn't possible for these small teams of people to know every system intimately especially in-season. To me, the Jays system is now average with more depth than many teams but lacking star-potential guys at the top.

I agree 100% with Glevin. We need stars. E Bonilla had a bad year but he is young.

With the 165 total prospects limit for every team We have seen some personal favorites get released. This allows teams to pick over the large quantity of released players. I expect many surprises. This is like a rule 5 draft.

That's generous. FanGraphs has Nimmala 6 spots behind a 24-year-old AA relief pitcher who has thrown 11 innings this season and been injured since early July.

Nimmala has star potential.  I don't think people appreciate how rare it is to find the level of power he has displayed at age 18.  I was trying to think of a player, and went through Trout and others, and settled on Giancarlo Stanton.  Power is not the most important attribute in a young player, but for me, it's easy to see how Nimmala could be a star in baseball in 2-3 years bearing in mind his other skills.  He's raw, but the arc of development so far is very good.

I agree that Nimmala is the system's number one prospect and probably the only one with star potential. The progress since returning from the complex is the most encouraging thing to me. However, Travis Snyder provides the cautionary tale here. He produced similar ISO numbers at low A (albeit at almost a year older) and the poor pitch recognition and K rates ultimately were too much to overcome as he got to the majors. I'll get a bit more excited if the K% starts to drop a bit.

It could be that the next very good Blue Jays team will have Nimmala as part of its core. Maybe Vladdy, too.
