NOTES

Buffalo used six pitchers and none emerged with flying colours. Andrew Bash started and just went two innings with one run allowed. It was downhill from there with Adrian Hernandez suffering most of all.

Alan Roden and Damiano Palmegiani each had just one hit but each hit was a home run. Josh Kasevich was 3-5 and is hitting .318 after his first week in AAA. Will Robertson doubled twice.

Abdiel Mendoza started and gave up six runs. Nick Fraze, who had been pitching well, was charged with five runs, Dahian Santos four.

Just five hits for the Fisher Cats. Ryan McCarty and Yohendrick Pinango each singled and doubled.

Carson Pierce started for Vancouver but left in the first inning with an injury. The six relievers who followed couldn't stem the tide of runs.

Seven hits for Vancouver, Peyton Williams and Brennan Orf homered. Williams also doubled.

Colby Holcombe, 9th round pick this year, started and went two shutout innings. However Eminem Flores and Julio Ortiz, both recently promoted from the FCL, were shelled.

The Jays did have 14 hits. Carter Cunningham was 3-5 including an inside the park home run. Four of this years draftees Nick Mitchell, Eddie Micheletti, Sean Keys and Brock Tibbets had two hits each.

De Los Santos sent back to Buffalo. No word on who is coming up but assume/hope it's Wagner as long as they give him playing time.

AAA

Young for the Level:

* IF Martinez (22): 269pa, 8.9b%, 24.2k%, .288bip, .260avg, .264iso, 119wrc+
* OF Clase (22): 317pa, 13.6b%, 24.9k%, .344bip, .276avg, .205iso, 111wrc+

Both young guys have had very nice years, though obviously not flawless.

Age appropriate:

* IF Jimenez (23): 226pa, 13.3b%, 15.0k%, .300bip, .271avg, .160iso, 130wrc+
* IF Kasevich (23): 23pa, 4.3b%, 4.3k%, .300bip, .318avg, .136iso, 107wrc+

Jimenez deserved the promotion and is kinda holding his own in the bigs. He's not for sure graduated yet but has a chance to stick for good. Surprise hot start for Kasevich after a not-so-deserved promotion - doubt he keeps it up but nice start.

A touch old for the level:

* UT Barger (24): 249pa, 16.1b%, 19.3k%, .299bip, .260avg, .206iso, 126wrc+
* OF Roden (24): 155pa, 13.5b%, 14.2k%, .292bip, .269avg, .138iso, 106wrc+
* UT Palmegiani (24): 372pa, 11.6b%, 29.8k%, .272bip, .213avg, .175iso, 85wrc+

Barger earned a promotion though didn't quite knock the door down. He might be back if he can't figure out mlb soon. Roden is quickly catching up after a very slow start that was possibly mostly babip bad luck. I imagine we'll see him get a look this year. Palmegiani....not so much.

Young prime guys who can't really be considered prospects, and have to earn everything they get:

* 1B Horwitz (26): 259pa, 17.0b%, 15.8k%, .401bip, .335avg, .179iso, 158wrc+
* IF Wagner (25): 355pa, 16.6b%, 10.4k%, .339bip, .315avg, .129iso, 129wrc+
* OF Loperfido (25): 189pa, 11.1b%, 28.0k%, .316bip, .272avg, .296iso, 122wrc+
* OF Berroa (25): 239pa, 12.1b%, 23.8k%, .373bip, .296avg, .160so, 122wrc+
* 1B Tirotta (25): 236pa, 14.4b%, 25.8k%, .309bip, .249avg, .207iso, 120wrc+
* IF DeLosSantos (26): 90pa, 16.7b%, 21.1k%, .286bip, .243avg, .157iso, 114wrc+
* OF Robertson (26): 349pa, 11.2b%, 30.9k%, .311bip, .243avg, .243iso, 109wrc+
* C Clarke (26): 126pa, 14.3b%, 15.9k%, .298bip, .257avg, .114iso, 101wrc+
* IF Lantigua (26): 387pa, 13.2b%, 20.2k%, .331bip, .258avg, .057iso, 84wrc+
* C Raposo (26): 218pa, 7.3b%, 21.6k%, .226bip, .200avg, .150iso, 55wrc+
* UT Turconi (25): 77pa, 6.5b%, 35.1k%, .311bip, .194avg, .028iso, 22wrc+

Horwitz did knock the door down and is holding his own well in the bigs. Wagner earned today's promotion but not flawless. Loperfido and Berroa a tick behind Wagner with riskier underlyings. Tirotta looks pretty good but has been coming down had after a hot start. Nothinig else worth mentioning here at the moment.

Veterans:

* OF Lukes (29): 192pa, 9.9b%, 15.1k%, .375bip, .333avg, .146iso, 134wrc+
* IF Cancel (27): 138pa, 16.7b%, 31.2k%, .308bip, .228avg, .211iso, 110wrc+
* X C Serven (29): 159pa, 16.4b%, 28.9k%, .386bip, .265avg, .114iso, 109wrc+
* DH Votto (40): 25pa, 20.0b%, 40.0k%, .333bip, .211avg, .158iso, 94wrc+
* C Henry (27): 94pa, 7.4b%, 18.1k%, .273bip, .244avg, .151iso, 81wrc+
* C McDowell (30): 146pa, 6.8b%, 32.9k%, .247bip, .192avg, .162iso, 60wrc+

Lukes the only one worth mentioning, with his solid profile as usual. Could be a good mlb bench guy whenever we want to use him. Time's running out for Votto to show something.

AA

Young:

* IF Paulino (21): 278pa, 10.4b%, 21.6k%, .335bip, .263avg, .128iso, 111wrc+

Hasn't made his Jays debut yet but has arguable the best AA line of any jays prospect when you factor in age.

Age Appropriate:

* IF McAdoo (22): 147pa, 12.2b%, 26.5k%, .298bip, .236avg, .189iso, 113wrc+
* OF Pinango (22): 255pa, 11.0b%, 21.2k%, .287bip, .232avg, .129iso, 103wrc+
* IF Dejesus (22): 389pa, 8.7b%, 28.0k%, .349bip, .254avg, .120iso, 100wrc+
* OF Brown (22): 12pa, 8.3b%, 33.3k%, .333bip, .200avg, .200iso, 87wrc+

Solid enough lines for all here. Holding their own at the right age here. McAdoo hasn't done much with us yet but I still think he's got the edge amongst this group and the chance to be more than just an average prospect.

A touch old:

* OF Schreck (23): 67pa, 16.4%, 22.4k%, .289bip, .222avg, .185iso, 127wrc+
* 1B Nunez (23): 328pa, 10.4b%, 18.3k%, .290bip, .258avg, .148iso, 109wrc+
* IF Kasevich (23): 392pa, 6.6b%, 10.7k%, .310bip, .282avg, .077iso, 97wrc+

Nice start for Schreck. His profile is interesting to me and worth keeping track of. Still waiting on Nunez' raw power to show, but he's doing pretty well even without it. Kasevich didn't earn his callup but i don't mind pushing up older prospects to see what happens.

A+

Young:

* OF Arias (20): 35pa, 17.1b%, 11.4k%, .400bip, .345avg, .034iso, 148wrc+
* IF Coffey (20): 314pa, 10.8b%, 24.5k%, .265bip, .230avg, .204iso, 112wrc+

Arias picking up right where he left off in A. Starting to look like a bit of a hitting machine tbh. Should climb our prospect rankings pretty quickly this year. Coffey hasn't taken off with us yet but still a very nice line for his age here.

Age Appropriate

* IF Pinto (21): 20pa, 0.0b%, 15.0k%, .500bip, .450avg, .400iso, 257wrc+
* IF Harry (21): 363pa, 8.5b%, 20.4k%, .241bip, .209avg, .139iso, 89wrc+

Would be cool if Pinto became a prospect all of a sudden. Perfect age for this level, so if he shows up now there's no reason to put any asterisks on his hitting line. Harry doesn't really deserve to be listed here but he's just a tad low and i wanted to include the new guy.

A touch old:

* C Sharp (22): 33pa, 6.1b%, 6.1k%, .200bip, .267avg, .367iso, 162wrc+
* OF Brown (22): 329pa, 11.9b%, 24.0k%, .330bip, .257avg, .154iso, 122wrc+
* 1B Orf (22): 150pa, 14.7b%, 24.0k%, .276bip, .222avg, .206iso, 116wrc+
* OF Bohrofen (22): 391pa, 12.5b%, 24.6k%, .300bip, .232avg, .149iso, 109wrc+

Nice start for Sharp. Hasn't done anything prior to make us think it's real tho. Brown deserved his promotion like we all said. Orf and Bohrofen holding their own - not quite deserving a promotion but not far off either.

A

Super Young

* IF Nimmala (18): 266pa, 9.4b%, 32.7k%, .274bip, .212avg, .247iso, 114wrc+

Excellent line for his age.

Young

* OF Joseph (19): 273pa, 7.3b%, 24.5k%, .281bip, .222avg, .134iso, 92wrc+

Good enough for his age to keep on here.

Age Appropriate

* OF Mitchell (20): 19pa, 10.5b%, 31.6k%, .444bip, .375avg, .438iso, 224wrc+
* OF Arias (20): 332pa, 10.8b%, 21.7k%, .347bip, .279avg, .175iso, 141wrc+
* C Duran (20): 264pa, 13.3b%, 15.2k%, .290bip, .241avg, .077iso, 103wrc+
* IF Beltre (20): 390pa, 9.5b%, 18.5k%, .280bip, .231avg, .083iso, 91wrc+
* IF Toman (20): 274pa, 7.3b%, 31.9k%, .340bip, .237avg, .114iso, 91wrc+

Great start for Mitchell. The power is the thing to keep an eye on here as it was the question mark in his otherwise excellent draft profile. Arias obviously deserved the promo. Duran a nice solid line. Beltre and Toman don't really deserve to be here but not that far behind.

A touch old:

* C Parker (21): 35pa, 14.3b%, 25.7k%, .350bip, .267avg, .200iso, 140wrc+
* OF Salinas (21): 21pa, 9.5b%, 9.5k%, .412bip, .362avg, .053iso, 149wrc+
* C Tibbitts (21): 29pa, 10.3b%, 10.3k%, .318bip, .280avg, .000iso, 103wrc+
* IF Freethy (21): 15pa, 20.0b%, 6.7k%, .200bip, .182avg, .000iso, 81wrc+

And here come the new guys....in sample sizes that don't matter at all of course. Great start for Parker. Not so much for Tibbits and Freethy.

Too old for this level:

* OF Micheletti (22): 17pa, 0.0b%, 23.5k%, .500bip, .400avg, .267iso, 191wrc+
* OF Cunningham (23): 32pa, 12.5b%, 25.0k%, .313bip, .261avg, .217iso, 149wrc+

Wish they started higher and hope they can be pushed up this year still - but at least both are smashing the level to start off.

* 4. Clase
* 5. Arias
* 6. Coffey
* 7. Paulino
* 8. McAdoo
* 9. Horwitz

There are pluses and minuses to all of those not named Nimmala but I think that's a pretty fair summation other than the inclusion of Martinez. Martinez's only interesting tool was the power and I think you have to assume that that was PED aided. I'd be very surprised to see Martinez turn out to be anything.

I think that's a little harsh on Orelvis.

There was a little worry a couple years ago that he couldn't hit for average at all but he's shown at AAA that that was likely just a babip thing. He now has solid patience and contact to go with that legit elite power, so it's not just a one tool situation now. It's a good enough line that even losing a bunch of power could still have him breaking even at AAA at 22, which is quite good.

But the point about PEDs is obviously fair....but i'm not gonna assume anything there. Power is never just about PEDS. Maybe he gets to the same place with more legal natural substances, i dunno. But i'll just judge him on what he does.

Gabriel Cancel was like a shooting star. He arrived, hit like a major leaguer for a few weeks, then regressed. Now he has been released.

Adrian Hernandez has been returned to New Hampshire.

Adrian Pinto homered and doubled last night in a 5-0 C's win. He has 7 extra-base hits in 23 PAs since his return from injury. That could be a lucky hot streak, but it's such a dramatic departure from his previous performance that I don't think so. I'd love to know his EVs.

He was back playing second base.

Silvano Hechavarria had 1 bad start (his 1st) of the 9 starts so far. A bit old for the DSL at 21. 6'4"200lb. 44IP, 10ER, 26H 14bb and 51K. Included in those numbers is his 1st start 3IP, 5H, 4Er, 2bb, and 3K. I don't know what he throws or how good it is.

Roden has adjusted to AAA and Kasevich SSS.

According to a tweet from BBWAA member and journalist Yordano Carmona:

Silvano Hechavarría, a 6’5 and 21-year-old pitcher, is set to join the Blue Jays on January 15th, with a signing bonus of approximately $250k. His pitching repertoire features fastballs ranging from 93-96 mph, sliders from 84-88 mph, changeups from 87-89 mph, and curves from 78-83 mph.
Nigel - Wednesday, August 14 2024 @ 03:11 PM EDT (#451369) #
Sure, maybe being so pessimistic about Martinez is unfair. But he hasn't actually put up really impressive wRC+ numbers in the minors since 2021 in A ball. Since then he's been average to solidly above average (95-125 wRC+). If you dial his power numbers back even a little his offensive projections start to look much more like a guy who will be more of a league average bat. Combine a league average bat with poor defence and no base running contributions and you don't have much. Sure, he's been generally young for his age but he's now lost a year and he isn't young any more.
uglyone - Wednesday, August 14 2024 @ 03:23 PM EDT (#451370) #
I think putting up 120wrc+ in both high minors levels while young for the level is legit impressive though.

Thanks Marc.
