NOTES

Jake Bloss made his first start for Buffalo and was held to just 50 pitches. That got him through 2.2 innings. Rochester had three hits and one walk while he struck out two. Four relievers followed him.

The Bisons got a run in the second inning when Nick Raposo singled in Alan Roden who had walked. Rochester then walked in a second run for Buffalo in the sixth. And those two runs were enough. The Bisons were outhit 8-5. Jonatan Clase and Josh Kasevich had two hits each.

In the first NH game, Lazaro Estrada started and gave up two runs in five innings. He struck out five. CJ Van Eyk and Anders Tolhurst each surrendered four runs. The Fisher Cats were outhit 16-5. Rainer Nunez and RJ Schreck each homered.

Rafael Sanchez pitched last Sunday in a doubleheader and threw a seven inning complete game shutout. On Saturday he pitched in game two of the doubleheader and again had a chance for a complete game shutout. But in the seventh a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases. He was at 100 pitches and was pulled at 6.2 innings and seven K's. Jonathan Lavalee came on to get the save.

Dasan Brown doubled to lead off the game and scored on a Michael Turconi single. In the second inning Charles McAdoo doubled and scored on a Cade Doughty single. Later Gabriel Martinez doubled and Robert Brooks singled him home to made it 3-0. McAdoo and Doughty had two hits each in a nine hit game for NH.

Vancouver trailed 4-1 in the sixth when Adrian Pinto hit a grand slam home run to make it 5-4. And that was the final score. Pinto also doubled. The C's had eight hits, Pinto had the only extra base hits and the only multi hit game.

Grant Rogers pitched into the sixth inning. He had a lot of base runners, nine hits and three walks but he held Eugene to four runs. He struck out seven.

Dunedin scored six runs with six hits, Palm Beach five runs with five hits. Nathan Lukes was there on rehab and went 2-3. Braden Barry also had two hits. The Jays were helped by five walks, four hit by pitches and two Palm Beach errors.

Nolan Perry started and went 3.1 innings and was charged with two runs. Dunedin used seven pitchers and combined they walked eleven hitters. Hagen Danner pitched a clean inning with two strikeouts.

Jays have some Rule 5/40-man roster decisions to make. Pardinho is a potential milb free agent that has shown good stuff but has struggled with his command at AAA. Dahain Santos is also eligible but a step behind in AA.

Victor Arias and Adrian Pinto are also eligible and both one year away from milb free agency. Both are hitting well in small samples and could soon be ready for AA. Both might be candidates for the Arizona Fall League to see how they stack up against older competition.

R Sanchez may be quite good. Not sure what he throws.

When I saw Sanchez last year, he had good secondaries but a below-average fastball that sat around 93 mph. He didn't command it well and it got hit hard. He's a little like Yariel (both Cuban) in that he works backwards off his secondaries but has a little less FB than Yariel. He looked more like a middle reliever or long man unless something has changed with the heater this year.

In the good news department, Nick Mitchell is doing very well in Dunedin.  He's just 20.  Between Dasan Brown in New Hampshire, Adrian Pinto in Vancouver and Nick Mitchell in Dunedin, I think they have a centerfielder.

Alan Roden homered and walked today.  He's younger and likely better than Loperfido, I think.  That's what the projections systems seem to be saying also.

Lots of potential CF, although I personally would like Varsho to be signed long term after suffering through the many used in CF between White and Pillar where you basically hoped the ball was hit right at them.

Using FanGraphs: FV=Future Value, 35+ a prospect, 50+ potential star, 70+ Vlad level.
  • Dasan Brown: 40 FV, age 22, 255/360/410 in A+/AA, 242/345/366 over 5 minor seasons (Rk/A/A+/AA mostly A+) with 100-31 SB-CS
  • Adrian Pinto: 35+ FV, age 21, 438/460/729 (51 PA, 3 levels), 303/430/444 over 3 years in minors (Rk/A/A+ mostly A) 71-19 SB-CS
  • Nick Mitchell: --FV, age 20, 333/385/833 (13 PA, A), 344/435/497 over 3 years in college
  • Jonatan Clase: 40 FV, age 22, 280/373/489 in AAA, 34 OPS+ majors (43 PA), 259/367/443 over 5 seasons. Plus his 209-46 SB-CS records over that time.
Interesting to go through current stats for the 3 Mike Green mentioned plus the hot new kid Clase.

yeah Clase is clearly better than 40fv imo. for comparison, he's he same age as Brown (also 40fv) there but is hitting as well in AAA as Brown was in A+.

He's the same age as Orelvis (50fv) and is hitting as well as he is in AAA....but with better underlyings and seemingly significantly more defensive chops.

I don’t think Pinto is a CF. I’m not even sure Pinto is a prospect. Maybe Mike meant Arias? He is both a CF and a prospect.

Pinto was playing CF for Vancouver.

And leading off, which points to some level of prospectness.

Sure, add in Clase and Arias into the CF mix.  My tentative read of the defensive abilities is: Dasan Brown...(big gap)...(Pinto, Mitchell, Clase, Arias). Brown can play the position very well, and the others have the speed for the position, but the refinement is very much a work-in-progress.  My very subjective opinion is that Pinto is the one who sticks in centerfield (in addition to Brown).  He's played mostly at second base, but has been hurt an awful lot.  They'd be well advised to leave him in centerfield.

What were the injuries he had? Why would being in CF prevent them?

I do recall though that when we traded for him, the belief was he could be a good CF. So always better to give him run there - we surely have enough 2B capable players in our system.
ISLAND BOY - Monday, August 12 2024 @ 03:32 PM EDT (#451303) #
In 2022 Pinto had a left hamstring injury that forced him to miss the last 3 months of the season. In 2023, he played regularly until June. In June and July he played only 7 games and none after July 14 because of leg injuries. This spring he suffered a rib injury and just recently started playing. Suffering so many leg injuries might mean he wouldn't be able to handle the turf in Toronto, if he ever makes it there.
