@ParrishBaseball The @BlueJays have selected Troy Guthrie (@guthrie2024) in the 11th Round with the 337th pick in the 2024 @MLBDraft. Troy is @ParrishHSAthle1 First player ever selected in the MLB Draft. Congratulations to Troy and his family! #TOTHECORE

Taylor Blake Ward @TaylorBlakeWard Blue Jays 11-337: Troy Guthrie, RHP, Parrish Community HS (FL) -- starter kit projection prep, low 90s FB, sweepy SL, downer CV flashes abv, separation CH in bag, avg control w/ phys/pwr gains dictating rotation future w/ size/arsenal to tap upside (FGCU commit)

Image from Post and Courier

Round 12 - 367th overall. RHP Carson Messina, Summerville HS, SC. Bats Right, Throws Right. 6-foot-2, 225 pounds. Born April 15, 2006..

MLB.com Scouting Report - Messina's older brother Cole is one of the best college catchers in the 2024 Draft, making it unlikely they'll be reunited at South Carolina next year. While Cole was starring with the Gamecocks, Carson was establishing himself as Palmetto State's best prep pitching prospect. He ran his fastball up to 97 mph before missing the end of his senior season with a hamstring injury. Messina is all about power on the mound, where he regularly operates with a 92-95 mph heater with running action. His curveball can be a wipeout pitch at times, sitting in the low 80s with plenty of depth. While his fading low-80s changeup is a work in progress, he does show some feel for throwing it for strikes. More physical than athletic, Messina throws with considerable effort and his delivery puts stress on his shoulder. That leads to questions as to whether he'll have enough control -- he doesn't have a track record of throwing strikes -- or durability to succeed as a starter. He has late-inning upside if he winds up in the bullpen, though teams usually are reluctant to invest heavily in a high schooler who projects as a reliever. Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40 Video

MLB Pipeline @MLBPipeline Brothers selected on consecutive days of the #MLBDraft! The #BlueJays take right-hander Carson Messina in the 12th round after the #Rockies drafted his older brother Cole out of @GamecockBasebll in the 3rd round yesterday.

Teddy Cahill @tedcahill Prep RHP Carson Messina to the Blue Jays in the 12th round. South Carolina commit, top-150 on our draft board. Very intriguing pick.

Alan Cole @Alan__Cole South Carolina signee Carson Messina goes in the 12th round (367th overall) to the Toronto Blue Jays. 12th round pick would imply that he cut a deal with Toronto and will sign, since high school prospect who fall this far often remove their names if they haven't gone.

Taylor Blake Ward @TaylorBlakeWard Blue Jays 12-367: Carson Messina, RHP, Summerville HS (SC) -- physical power prep, low/mid 90s SK, tight breaker regularly shows plus, some feel for CH, delivery tweaks to test as starter w/ arsenal that would play as pwr reliever (South Carolina commit)

Rapsodo Baseball @rapsodo Carson Messina joins his high school teammate PJ Morlando by getting drafted with the @BlueJays at the 367th pick.

Kevin Bilodeau @KevinLive5 Summerville has their 3rd alum picked in the MLB Draft. Carson Messina taken in the 12th round with the 367th pick by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Green Wave pitcher, who saw his brother drafted yesterday, is committed to go to South Carolina

Taylor Blake Ward @TaylorBlakeWard Blue Jays 13-396: Brock Tibbitts, C, Indiana -- well rounded offense-first RHH catcher/corner, patient hitter w/ fringe-avg hit tool and phys based raw pwr, big frame may move him to 1B/LF/RF but liked by pitchers w/ enough def traits to stick at C.

Image from Indiana University Athletics

Round 13 - 397th overall. C Brock Tibbitts, Indiana. Bats Right, Throws Right. 6-foot-4, 225 pounds. Born October 4, 2002.

MLB.com Scouting Report - Tibbitts endeared himself to scouts by missing just a month after surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in April, and also by selflessly spending more of the season at first base (where Indiana had a need) than behind the plate (which would have helped his Draft chances). Though he hasn't caught much for the Hoosiers, he's athletic for a 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, is making strides as a receiver and has solid arm strength. He puts the bat on the ball but needs to make better quality contact to tap into more power. He hit .313/.404/.472 this spring.

Twitter Reaction

Tyler Kotila @tyler_kotila The Blue Jays grabbed #Hoosiers bat, Brock Tibbitts, with their 13th rd pick. Good backstop w/ a power oriented profile. Tons to like w/ feel to do damage at the plate. Took strides in the B10. #PGDraft x #MLBDraft // #TOTHECORE

Jared Perkins @JaredCP1. The Toronto Blue Jays select Brock Tibbitts in the 13th round. Interesting prospect out of @IndianaBase. Missed some time due to an injury, but before that was a reliable and consistent player in Indiana’s lineup. Physical presence in the box.

Jack Ankony @ankony_jack. The Toronto Blue Jays used their 13th-round pick on Indiana first baseman and catcher Brock Tibbitts, who made the 2024 NCAA Knoxville All-Regional team. https://si.com/college/indiana/baseball/toronto-blue-jays-select-indiana-hoosiers-brock-tibbitts-in-2024-mlb-draft. #iubase

Twitter Reaction

Ryley Delaney @Ryley_L_D. I mean it's not impossible the Jays are able to sign Gavin Smith. In 2022, they signed a prep pitcher Gage Stanifer, who was selected in the 19th round. Can't say for certain it's a hedge pick... but I think the chances that it is are pretty high.

Image from AL.com

Round 19 - 577th overall. 1B D'Marion Terrell, Thompson HS, AL. Bats Left, Throws Left . 6-foot-3, 212 pounds. Born Febryar 10, 2006.

MLB.com Scouting Report - While Carter Johnson is the consensus top high school prospect in Alabama, some evaluators believe Terrell has a higher ceiling. He's a physical left-handed hitter who draws some comparisons to Cliff Floyd, albeit with less athleticism. Originally ticketed for Northwest Florida State JC, he committed to Auburn following a strong senior season. Terrell's raw power is his best attribute, as he has 25-30 homer potential thanks to the strength and leverage in his 6-foot-3, 206-pound frame. There are mixed reports on his hitting ability, though his proponents like his gap-to-gap approach, plate discipline and pitch recognition. He has a sound left-handed swing with impressive bat speed, though he won't fully tap into his pop until he improves his timing. Terrell moves well for his size and can flash plus straight-line speed, though he plays as more of an average runner on the diamond. He probably fits best in left field with his average arm and could be a quality defender if he winds up at first base. He'll need some time to develop but the payoff could be huge. Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45 Video

Adam Cole @colereporter Replying to @colereporter Another #Auburn signee gets selected in similar fashion. Toronto takes OF D'Marion Terrell at No. 577 overall in the 19th round. Like Gatwood, Terrell was considered a way higher value, sitting at No. 153 on the same board that had Gatwood slated just outside the top 100.

Taylor Blake Ward @TaylorBlakeWard. Blue Jays 19-577: D'Marion Terrell, OF, Thompson HS (AL) -- physical/athletic LHH prep outfielder, quick cut w/ frequent hard contact and plus bat spd/phys to tap into abv/+ raw pwr, fair discipline/approach, plus runner w/ athleticism/strong arm to play whole OF (Auburn commit)

Reminder that all picks in the 11th-20th rounds can be signed for up to 150k without affecting bonus pools. This allows teams to sign interesting prospects that may normally be in the top 10 rounds but would affect the pool. They are still longshots, of course, but in 2022 this allowed the Jays to take Nolan Perry, Gage Stanifer, and Sammy Hernandez.
Glevin - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#449529) #
The Jays need to draft power because that might be the only way I can get my lights back on.
metafour - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 02:21 PM EDT (#449530) #
The Jays draft HS RHP Troy Guthrie in the 11th round.

Presumably implies that they have a deal set with him as he is the 1st pick of the day.
Gerry - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 02:39 PM EDT (#449531) #
We don't know if the Jays saved money in the first 10 rounds that they can distribute from round 11-20.

First 2 picks on day 3 are high schoolers that could need some extra dollars.
Kelekin - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#449532) #
Wow, can't believe we went for Carson Messina. I question whether he'll sign, but he had a lot of late buzz heading into the draft. More than happy with high risk late picks.
bpoz - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 02:54 PM EDT (#449533) #
I was thinking the same thing Gerry. Save money in a weak draft year and then pick some expensive players. I was more sure that Cleveland would follow that strategy because they have a massive draft pool and no Rutschman/Skenes to spend the money on.
Ducey - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 03:12 PM EDT (#449534) #
Any idea why the Jays picked earlier in the 12th round?

Maybe they slipped Manfred a twenty?
uglyone - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 03:16 PM EDT (#449535) #
ooh Messina is a nice pick if we can sign him.

young 18yr old with velo up to 97 sounds like. seems like he must throw a slurvy type pitch that some classify as a curve and some as a slider, but apparently a very good pitch whatever they call it. maybe it actually is two distinct pitches or maybe he can turn it into two distinct pitches going forward.
GabrielSyme - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 03:23 PM EDT (#449536) #
JR Freethy looks like a nice selection in the 14th round. Switch hitter with some pop, more walks than strikeouts, has improved significantly this season. The draft tracker has him as a 2B, but it looks like he only played outfield this year at Nevada.

Does anyone have a BA subscription? It would be interesting to know where some of these guys rank (or don't) on their top 500.
Ducey - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 03:31 PM EDT (#449537) #
Round 14 JR Freethy. College senior. Listed as 2B but only player OF last year. Hit 303/414/580 at Nevada, with 35 BB v 31 K.

Its pretty evident that the Jays are scouring the world for guys who have close to, or more, BB than K.

That might be where they are having a problem finding guys that hit for power.
Ducey - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 03:44 PM EDT (#449538) #
15th rounder Jonathan Todd. 6'6" RP.

The good news. He had the best ERA on his team last year by a mile. The bad news. The team ERA was 6.98!

36IP 29H 13BB 49K, and 7 saves, if you are into those. The rest of the team had 2 saves. Somehow the Western Carolina Catamounts had a winning record.
mathesond - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 04:19 PM EDT (#449539) #
"Somehow the Western Carolina Catamounts had a winning record."

Maybe the Jays should be drafting their hitters!
GabrielSyme - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 04:50 PM EDT (#449540) #
18th round draftee Holden Wilkerson managed a 7.85 ERA and a 1.8 FIP this year as a starter for VMI. Last year was worse.

When was the last time someone so ineffective in college became a decent major leaguer?
Ducey - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 05:00 PM EDT (#449541) #
Pretty small sample size Gabriel. Who knows?

D'Marion Terrell in the 19th round. The Jays were rumoured to be on him in the 1st. Not likely to sign
Kelekin - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 05:02 PM EDT (#449542) #
Yeah, Wilkerson is another guy where he probably has great stuff but is a project, so you take a shot because the upside is there so why not.

Terrell probably won't sign, but at least it's a solid backup option if we run into issues or save enough money with our top picks. Guessing his initial asking was too high.
Gerry - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 05:20 PM EDT (#449543) #
It will be interesting to see if the number of players limit will impact signings. The Jays might have to release players to bring in all their draft signees.
bpoz - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 05:29 PM EDT (#449544) #
True Gerry. If Atkins needs advice on who to release he could get it here at a small price. A few of us Bauxites can create a long post without actually saying anything.

Today was a fun day!!

I have been a big fan of C's Plus Baseball so by 6:00PM I expect that about 5 Non Drafted Players (NDP) will be called and offered contracts. See Ryan McCarthy and Devonte Brown.
scottt - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 05:58 PM EDT (#449546) #
That's not unique to the Jays. They draft around 20 players each year now.
Some teams have a few more because of competitive picks.

Lots of pitchers won't throw a pitch this year.

Hodgie - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 06:55 PM EDT (#449547) #
Hope all Toronto-based members of the Box are safe today.
Kelekin - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 07:29 PM EDT (#449548) #
I anticipate King, Guthrie, and Messina won't pitch this year. We might see most of the college arms get a taste of the FCL - especially if they're hoping their first two picks can move fast.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 07:37 PM EDT (#449549) #
With the FCL season ending soon, the Jays will be able to release players from there to help meet the new player limits in the org.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 07:47 PM EDT (#449550) #
Also to refute the Twitter comments about Gavin Smith - there are two Arizona HS Gavin Smiths. The one Toronto drafted is not headed to Harvard. He's a Pepperdine commit per Perfect Game.
John Northey - Tuesday, July 16 2024 @ 09:05 PM EDT (#449551) #
Looking at Holden Wilkerson's stats he has a lot of k's and drastically reduced his walks this year. His HR given up are high but that could be a park-league factor. Still, at round 18 you are happy if they can fill in innings to allow the top prospects to play.

I think it will be a minor miracle if they succeed. Thoughts and prayers as they say.

A couple of notes from the draft:

Dante Nori was the first Canadian taken in the draft, by the Philadelphia Phillies. He was born in Toronto when his father, Marc Nori, was an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors but spent most of his childhood in Michigan.

The Jays last pick, in round no. 20, was Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek. His father, Mark Grudzielanek, started out his baseball career with the Expos and played for a total of 15 years and accumulated a total of 26.5 WAR.
Mike Green - Wednesday, July 17 2024 @ 01:15 PM EDT (#449561) #
Mark Grudzielanek had an interesting career path, with the best 3 year period of his career from ages 35-37. He held his offensive value and was a good defensive second baseman. He delivered about as much value during that time as VGJ did the last 3 years (since July 2021).

Toronto Blue Jays
Jay Schueler, RHP, Southeastern (Fla.) University
Hayden Gilliland, C, Tennessee Tech

Gilliland is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound catcher who hit over .300 in three of his four seasons at Tennessee Tech. This spring the lefthanded-hitting backstop slashed .325/.433/.569 with 13 home runs and 12 doubles while posting a career-low 9.4% strikeout rate and solid 15% walk rate. He has a fairly well-rounded offensive profile based on his batted ball data, which includes an 83% contact rate, 19% chase rate and solid but unspectacular top-end exit velocities.

I took a quick look at Perfect Game's rankings, which I didn't realise are public.

They are high on King, ranking him 51.

The full list of Jays draftees on the PG list, which went to 400:

13 Yesavage
269 Stephen
51 King
314 Keys
274 Mitchell
380 Holcombe
352 Messina
147 Tibbitts
379 Martin
111 Terrell

And for good measure, the Fangraphs rankings - they only did 100:

19 Yesavage
59 Stephen
90 King
57 Keys

Our highest pick not to be ranked by anyone I've seen was Aaron Parker, whom we took in the 6th round. But hard to argue with taking a catcher slashing .379/.460/.632.

Something amazing is how much data and video is accessible now. I looked on twitter for Aaron Parker and there are a bunch of videos. Apparently also his "full intent bat speed" is around 80 mph which I gather is very good. Has a pronounced front leg kick as well. This is all easy info to find on an unranked prospect. Incredible.
