NOTES

Gabriel Cancel is a 27 year old infielder just signed by the Jays. He was previously in the Royals organization. He hit a three run home run in the seventh to give Buffalo a temporary lead. He also came in to pitch after Mason Fluharty had given up four runs in the tenth. This was a bullpen day for the Jays and all four regular pitchers who appeared gave up runs.

Cancel had a double to go with his home run. He had two of the Bisons six hits. Riley Tirotta homered in the ninth to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Michael Dominguez didn't survive the second inning having allowed five runs. Three of the four relievers who followed also conceded runs. Just five hits for the Fisher Cats.

Vancouver just keep on winning. Once again they scored three runs in the eighth inning to break a tie. Jace Bohrofen singled in Dasan Brown in the eighth followed by a Peyton Williams double. Brown and Williams had three hits each.

Ryan Jennings just went 3.2 innings, four runs allowed but just two earned. For this team the three relievers kept Hillsboro off the board.

In the first Dunedin game Victor Arias homered to lead off the game and the Jays could only register two hits the rest of the game. Grant Rogers took the loss.

Fernando Perez went five innings in game two. Lakeland scored one run off Perez with three hits. He struck out five.

Nicolas Deschamps homered in the fifth for the Jays first run. Tucker Toman drove in the second run. But the Jays just had four hits in the game after getting three hits in game one.

Jennings has good numbers and a decent draft pedigree (4th round). Is he projectable?

Jennings was a value college senior signee whom the Jays likely viewed as a potential reliever. He's developed better than expected. I saw him pitch after he was drafted and came away impressed with the arm and the stuff (mid-90s FB, good breaking ball). Could be a useful arm.

Thanks Marc,

Always appreciate the insight.

Generic mid round college seniors (90-93 FBs and one functional breaking ball) tend to do well in the Northwest League. They’re older and a bit more advanced than many in the lineups they face. I don’t get too excited about those pitchers succeeding in Vancouver. The first time I saw Jennings he would have fit that description but I was pretty impressed yesterday. Improved velocity and he now looks a cut above that description.

I almost never get excited about pitching prospects period (TINSTAPP) but definitely not relievers and not anybody in low minors. You can throw 90 with a deceptive delivery or have a flat 96 MPH fastball and be great in A ball but your chances of being a good major leaguer are not good.

Juaron Watts Brown has been promoted to Vancouver.

Meanwhile Vancouver pitcher Josh Mollerus has been traded to Texas for AAA pitcher Yerry Rodriguez.

I’m a Bisons fan all the way, and love how easy it is to get there for a weekend. But Watching the AAA Jay’s back when they played in Syracuse is a favourite childhood memory. So I don’t mind losing to Syracuse.

Fun time to be a Canadians fan! Any hot takes on why the team is so good right now?

Vancouver has the best defence in the NWL and a lot of over-age pitchers are doing well. It's been fun to see, though.

That rotation looks pretty legit to me, though, age notwithstanding. Estrada is old but those 8 starts pop. And Sanchez is a signee from Cuba, which complicates his age for projections.

Good to hear about the team defense. The lineup seems highly cromulent, prospect-wise. Williams seems to lengthen it, and brown continues to intrigue with his speed and defense.

How does the catcher Hornung look to people?

Not sure on Hornung's framing or game-calling, but he's thrown out 8 of 93 basestealers (9%), in only 44 games at the position. Which also means he is giving up about 2 SB per game.

Definitely agree with you about the rotation. Estrada, Sanchez, and Jennings have all looked great.
