NOTES

Riley Tirotta drove in Nathan Lukes in the ninth inning to send the Buffalo game to extra innings. In the top of the tenth Steward Berroa drove in two runs to make it 6-4. But ex-Jay Nick Podkul hit a three run home run in the bottom of the tenth, it was a tough loss.

Earlier Orelvis Martinez and Brian Serven homered. Five hitters picked up two hits each. Notably Spencer Horwitz went 2-4 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth. Both Horwitz and Will Robertson, the pinch hitter, are left handed hitters.

If you haven't been paying close attention Orelvis has been struggling after a good start. In April Orelvis hit .310 with seven home runs. In May it was a BA of .205 with six home runs. Tonights home run was just his second hit in June. His strikeout rate has bumped up too.

New Hampshire did the opposite, scoring twice in the ninth to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 win. Devonte Brown was the hero with a two run home run. Earlier Alan Roden and Josh Kasevich homered. Roden seems to have gone back to a higher hand start to his swing and it seems to be getting him back on track. Phil Clarke had two hits and is re-establishing his prospect status. His BA is up to .307. Health is always the major concern for Clarke.

Devereaux Harrison went six innings and was charged with two runs on four hits. He struck out three. Eric Pardinho picked up his first save.

Conor O'Halloran had some control issues on Thursday. He hit the first two batters followed by a wild pitch. He wriggled out of that jam. He hit another batter in the third, followed by a walk. Those control issues then bit him when he was taken deep for a three run home run. He did go five innings and just gave up two hits. But he walked four, hit three. He did strike out seven so there were a lot of three true outcome at bats.

Vancouver's only run come from a home run by Jamari Baylor.

Dunedin scored a run in the ninth to send their game to extra innings. The teams traded one run each in the tenth and eleventh. The Jays scored their run in the top of the 12th but Palm Beach got two in the bottom of the inning.

Jean Joseph had three hits with two doubles, out of the leadoff position. Marcus De La Rosa also had three hits. Manuel Beltre, Esward Duran and Daniel Perez had two each.

Grant Rogers started and gave up four runs in five innings.

The FCL Jays lost by a run, but they were outhit 10-3. I wanted to mention Sam Shaw, a 19 year old from Victoria. Shaw has been hitting at the top of the order and is hitting .241. In 83 at bats he has struck out 12 times, pretty good. He was walked 19 times so he has a good eye. He has two doubles, one triple and two home runs. His OPS is .751 but for June (small sample) its over 1.000. It's early in his career but he is off to a good start.

Orelvis has made solid progress this year but i think he's right where he belongs right now. No need to even think of calling him up at the moment. Let him ripen at a level he's holding his own in at a young age.

Horwitz, Barger, Lukes, Jimenez are the only ones that should be in consideration for a promotion anytime soon imo.

After all the adversity he has overcome, it is great to see Eric Pardinho succeeding, albeit in a relief role in NH. The walk rate is a little too high, but there is little to complain about the rest of his results. Hoping for his sake he can maintain his good health going forward.

Jimenez was hit by a pitch recently and added to the IL immediately so he may not be available for a while...

Horwitz was also removed late in last night's game - and it was a close game. So either he got hurt or was called up but the timing was odd for that latter scenario.

After I discussed Phil Clarke hitting well above, he has been promoted to Buffalo.

I am ecstatic that Phil Clarke has been promoted to Buffalo because we need a Jansen replacement in case he leaves.

How is Clarke's defense? A few years ago BA said that he was "not a great receiver, although his hands and blocking ability could be good enough. There are more questions about his throwing on account of his below-average arm strength and long release."

Well deserved (and overdue) for Clarke.
