I saw the headline and immediately thought, 'Oh Rob!'

Overall I am ok with our prospects. M Beltre, Toman and Nimmala are not dominating but are young. I don't expect a large quantity of impact players immediately or on a regular time table. This philosophy helps me to not get discouraged.

Orelvis could be an impact player with his O. His D is holding him back. We are now using "flawed prospect" as a category due to some area that needs improvement.

I just try to be optimistic.

Geoff Pontes had some comments in the BA Hot Sheet Chat on which Jays' prospects have trended up so far:

This is Josh Kasevich on the surface, he's hit really well in New Hampshire to start the year. In typical Blue Jays style he's more hit tool than power but there's maybe a little more power there than anticipated. He can play all over the infield and I think can help a MLB team in the next couple of years. The more off the radar one is Eric Pardinho. He's come out of the NH pen for me a couple of times and he's sitting 94-95 touching 98 mph w/ 18 IVB/10 HB from a lower release. Mixes a solid slider, a changeup and curveball and everything is missing bats at an above-average rate. Perhaps he's found a second act as a relief prospect.

The Jays are still signing players. Yorman Licourt Switch hitting OF 6'2" 192 lb. Danny Martinez LHP 6'6" 175lb. I don't know their ages. Sounds like latin players.

International free agents are mostly latino players.
Licourt is Cuban. Martinez is Dominican.

I think some of it is the Jays spending the Wes Parsons money.

They also signed a shortstop name Jamari Baylor.
He was a third round pick of the Phillies in 2019 who has been release but was playing in the Atlantic League.

Dasan Brown had a nice game for the Canadians last night-singled, homered and walked twice while stealing his 10th base.
He's slashing .266/.352/.420 and hasn't been caught stealing yet. The homer was quite far gone, and as always, the ball does seem to jump off his bat.

He still swings and misses a little more than one would like, but I think he does need to spend some time in double A now. He's 22, plays good defence in CF, and has had over a year in A+.

If he can hit even a bit, Brown could be a valuable player in the majors. Look at CF Michael A. Taylor's career (1014 games in MLB, 80 wRC+, 10.5 total fWAR).

Brown will be 23 in September, so you would like to see him advance a level and continue to develop as a hitter.

Brown's underlying numbers are pretty decent this year.  His W rate is up to 10%; his K rate is down to 23%, LD rate up to 20%, HR/fly rate a solid 12.5% and an even GB/FB.  He can bunt for a hit, hit the ball out of the park, reach on an infield hit/error, and so if he can avoid striking out 180 times a year, he should be decent.

Those are positive indicators. However, it is his third consecutive year at high-A. Let's see how he does in the high minors at age 23/24.

To be more specific:

Trenton Wallace 2.53 ERA in 9 starts in AA. 25 yrs old just 27 hits in 42 IP with 55K. 21 BB not ideal, but otherwise trending well

Connor O'Halloran 3.13 ERA as a 21 yr old in DUN. 37.1 IP 31H 13BB 45 K

Adam Macko 3.68 ERA. 23 in AA. 44IP 33H 16BB 56K

Michael Dominguez 4.36 ERA 23 in AA. 43.1 IP 38H 17B 39K

Fernando Perez 3.64 ERA. 20 yrs old in DUN. 42 IP 36H 11BB 48K

J. Watts-Brown 3.75 ERA as 22 yr old in DUN. 36 IP 31H 22BB 51K

Marc Hulet - Thursday, May 30 2024 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#446760) #
Wallace tops out around 91, O'Halloran is 89-90 tops, which significantly limits their ceilings. They're fringe prospects regardless of numbers.
