Macko looking like someone who might be able to help this season
Mike Green - Monday, May 27 2024 @ 09:33 AM EDT (#446622) #
Macko has never thrown more than 88 innings in a season.  This is a good year for him to throw 120-140 innings.  If all goes well, that could include a stint in the major league bullpen at the end of the year for 6 weeks or something.

Steward Berroa has been a good player for over a year now, but he doesn't have a track record vs. left-handed pitchers.  Alan Roden is ready to move up, as well.  I really don't know what the club ought to do about Springer. He looks a little lost everywhere, and I wonder if he's fighting something which is sapping his energy.  The club does have options and it sure would be nice if one had confidence that they could cleverly sift through them.

Vogelbach and Turner will probably be OK as hitters, but together they don't fit the right niche to make sense on this roster.  It's a club that is a jigsaw puzzle with quite a few pieces that don't fit together well.

Send Springer to Atlanta to replace Acuna

Also, I disagree with you Mike on the options point. This team isn’t in need of replacement level players to plug black holes, it’s missing impact talent. Unfortunately we don’t seem to have that kind of player in the minors right now.

That Bison lineup seems to be everything the Jays lineup isn’t. The best way to find out if those numbers translate to the majors is to give the players a chance.

The Blue Jays will be announcing the trade of George Springer later today to Atlanta for Joe Jimenez.

Tomorrow, Rogers Communications will announce that the Atlanta Braves have acquired a controlling interest in their company and have paid $1.50 USD.  The Securities and Exchange Commission in the US has announced that they do not have any interest in the puzzling transaction.

The bad, bad Leroy Brown of MLB!

Blue Jay position player performance using an average of BBRef and Fangraphs metrics- taking into account playing time:

Arguable All-Star and better (4+WAR pace): Varsho, IKF, Jansen
Good player (2.5-4 WAR pace): Guerrero Jr., Schneider
Average player (1.5-2.5 WAR pace): Kirk, Biggio, Kiermaier, Clement
Below average player (0.5-1.5 WAR pace): Bichette
Replacement level and below: Vogelbach, Turner, Springer

We're almost at the 1/3 pole.  You've got 9 players who are average or above and one who will probably end up that way (Bichette).  That's not so bad and mostly it's about putting the right players in the right roles and finding a couple of pieces.  For instance, both ZiPS and Steamer think that Spencer Horwitz is a better offensive player and a better baserunner and a better defender than Vogelbach or Turner.  That seems like the P-K4 move to me.

Agreed Mike. Horwitz up for Vogelbach seems like a no brainer, in any case.

Would like see Lukes get a chance.

Vogelbach has looked pretty good at the plate recently. I'm skeptical that a guy being outhit by Lukes in Buffalo would make a big difference to this team.

I've done a lot of ragging on fangraphs for some of their prospect ratings, but they nailed Vogelbach's speed in 2018. 20/20.  Good for vision, not so good for mobility.

Roden made the latest BA Hot Sheet (weekly list of 20 hottest MLB prospects):

13. Alan Roden, OF, Blue Jays
Team: Double-A New Hampshire (Eastern)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .414/.485/.724 (12-for-29), 7 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 5 BB, 3 SO, 3-for-4 SB

The Scoop: Lots of hitters who struggled to find their footing in the chilly opening months of the Eastern League have started to turn it around as the temperatures in New England get warmer. The Blue Jays’ No. 8 prospect had a big week at home against Somerset. Over the seven-game series, Roden had three multi-hit games while reaching base in all seven contests. Roden flexed some power in the week’s opening game as he hit a pair of home runs in Tuesday’s 4-for-5 showing. Roden has a balance of plate skills with good contact, approach and fringe-average power. He can play either corner outfield spot defensively. (GP)

About once a year I get moderately interested in Manuel Beltre as a prospect - this is that time again. Beltre is 2-2 tonight with his 4th HR. He's still only 19. He seems to have a similar offensive profile as Jimenez in that he can do a bit of everything albeit at a modest level. He got decent strike zone control, a bit of power and a bit of speed. Whether he has any defensive chops or not I don't know.

The 4 most important prospects for the Jays are Miguel Beltre, Arjun Nimmala, Emmanuel Bonilla and Tucker Toman. Two of these four need to be stars at the major league level. Sadly, Bonilla is the only one with a chance at this point.

Shatkins stated on day one that AA had a bare cupboard of prospects and that they’ll restock that cupboard. They have a F grade for restocking the farm system.
