Serven and Andrew Cash were a battery in high school and now in AAA. Kinda cool.

Jimenez now 262/407/492 with 4 HR and 12/14 BB/K in his last 20 games. He's 260/431/420 overall.

Turns 23 in 2 days.

If, and when, they decide to trade Bo, it would seem he is ready to take over SS.

Factoring in age, history of performance, defence and composition of his offensive profile, Jimenez is the prospect above low A ball that I would place the highest odds of being an average major league regular. Frankly, maybe the only one I would give decent odds of that happening to.

Jimenez has 23 BB and 21 K on the season. How's his defense at SS? His development lines up well with Bichette's free agency after '25.

Still not sure Jimenez profiles as starter-quality unless his glove is plus plus.

I really don't think you need to see plus plus defence for Jimenez to be a league average regular. If he's an average defender at SS and can put up a 95-100 wRC+ then he's a 2-2.5 WAR player. Look at Volpe with the NYY - in a season and a quarter he's put up 4 fWAR and 5.3 bWAR with a 90wRC+, above average base running and good but not great defence.

Volpe is getting a lot of value out of both baserunning and defense tho, and his minor league hitting track record is much, much better than Leo's (while being much younger).

Though I guess a 90-95wrc+ bat is plausible for Leo (though far from a guarantee), which yeah could make him a plausible starter even with just good SS defense not great.

Bill Russell, 1972.  Not the Celtics center, but the Dodgers' SS.  100 wRC+, -3 defence, - 0.4 baserunning, 477 PAs, 2.5 fWAR.  Being an average or near-average offensive shortstop who plays the position capably will make you an average or slightly above-average player.  Whether Jimenez can play the position capably, I really don't know.

Jimenez will be out of options next year, so ideally he gets a spot as a utility guy next year, if Bo is still around.

Not likely to beat out IKF (although I guess they could trade him if they are doing a tear down), Clement or Schneider.

But I will get back on my soap box and suggest they could ditch Biggio at some point and give Leo his spot.

My impression is that, even for well-scouted top prospects, it's hard to have confidence in reports on their defensive ability. Some are significantly worse than expected, some are significantly better. The Jays, I'm sure, have better internal evaluations of Jimenez's defence than are publicly available.

As a hitter, I think there's a lot to like about Jimenez: decent power, decent contact ability, some speed, some patience. I think that adds up to something around average; but even if he's slightly below-average at the plate, and average defensively, that makes for an above-average regular, given the position. The real threat to his value is if the offense doesn't translate to MLB and he simply doesn't hit enough.

The projection systems actually have his milb performance translating in the 92-100 wrc+ range which is surprisingly good, and makes him very playable if he's a legit SS defensively.

More on Leo Jimenez: I had not known until now that Statcast now has xwOBA for AAA. Jimenez looks even better by that metric: he has a wOBA of .400 but an xwOBA of .426, best on the Bisons. Better too than Jackson Holliday, Heston Kjerstad, James Woods, Junior Caminero, Coby Mayo and Kyle Manzardo, all of whom are top-50 prospects and raking.

That's pretty extraordinary for a glove-first shortstop.

The Blue Jays are expected to sign one of “12 players to watch” in the 2025 International Draft Class. Cristopher Polanco, SS, Dominican Republic is “one of the most advanced hitters in the class.” He’s a LHB with a compact swing.

The above is from Baseball America, btw

Thanks, Gabriel. You can watch video from last year on YouTube, and decide whether the 35 raw power grade and the 170 lbs. that Fangraphs had for him in December was accurate. Anyways, I see Jimenez as having average power and good plate control.

If he can field the position adequately, he's going to be a good player. Fangraphs thinks he will field the position more than adequately, but sadly I don't trust them about that either.

Nathan Lukes is having quite the game - 4/4 with two doubles and a home run. It's still only the top of the fifth, so he should have a couple opportunities to get a triple to complete the cycle.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 15 2024 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#446138) #
Watts-Brown is having his best game so far- 4 shutout innings with 9K.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 15 2024 @ 09:22 PM EDT (#446139) #
Watts Brown had nine K's in four innings, Adam Macko had nine in five.

Lukes ended 6-6, Yhoangel Aponte 4-4.

Some nights its hard to find three stars, tonight a worthy player will be left out.

And Ohashi...another inning without a run. Struck out the side. Made them look silly.

8 starts for C Dallas and 138 ABs for Orelvis. Getting to a serious 1st evaluation mark.

115 ABs for Roden in AA and 124 ABs for Kacevich so another 50 ABs for a 1st evaluation. Trenton Wallace has been dominant in 6 starts. He probably goes to AAA soon. Many of our AA relievers are looking very good.
