NOTES

Buffalo won a rain shortened game. The rains came with one out in the bottom of the fifth but the Bisons led 2-0 so the game was called. Leo Jimenez, Max McDowell and Steward Berroa each singled to start the fourth to make it 1-0. A groundout made it 2-0. The Bisons had five hits in the short game, three came in that one inning.

Troy Watson started and went 2.2 innings, 48 pitches. He struck out five. His FB averaged 95.4 mph. Connor Cooke got four outs, Nick Fraze three.

Trenton Wallace went five shutout innings, striking out five for New Hampshire. Three relievers closed it out with Jimmy Burnette picking up his second save.

The Fisher Cats scored two runs with two hits. The two runs came in the third inning via a walk, a single an error and a groundout. Riley Tirotta had the hit in that inning. Gabriel Martinez added a double in the seventh for the only other hit.

The D Jays lost again but at least on this day they outhit Jupiter 8-6. Victor Arias went 3-5 and is leading the team by far with a .383 BA and an 1.026 OPS. Arias was not a rated prospect coming into the season. In John Northey's summary just one site listed him in the 30-50 range. Arias hit .222 in the FCL last season but in 2022 he hit .315 in the DSL. Arias is 20 years old and maybe is finding his way now. He will be watched to see if he can keep this going. Arias started the game by getting out with a 105 mph fly ball. His singles exit velocities were 86, 98 and 102 mph.

Gage Stanifer was called up for the game from the FCL and went two innings allowing two runs on three hits. His FB averaged 93 mph and he had six whiffs. He was followed by Eliander Alcalde who had nine whiffs and he used his slider more than his fastball.

The Jays have three guys with on OBP of .350 or more (Turner, Jansen, Biggio).

The Bisons have 9 regulars over .350. The second highest is Steward Berroa. He is at 279/458/361 with 12 SB.

If they want to make MLB more exciting. The solution is simple - bring in the robo-umps.

I got interested in Berroa last season. I haven't seen anything on his defence, but a guy who switch hits, plays centre field, steals bases at a good clip and gets on base is a pretty ideal fourth outfielder.

His current line is inflated by a .429 BABIP (last year he did put up a .377 in AA), but his major problem is that he strikes out too much - nearly 30% for a guy without much power. That looks to be in part a function of working into deep counts - his swinging strike rate is a quite reasonable 8.9%, down from last year in AA. Overall, there's a lot to like in his profile for a guy who didn't make it onto any prospect lists.

We got confirmation today that Brandon Barriera had TJ surgery, combined with an internal brace, known as a hybrid procedure for you medical experts.

Berroa doesn't have great defensive instincts... his speed can make up for some of it but not all. He's not an everyday CF in the majors.

Offensively, he's a guy that should focus on just putting the ball in play and shooting for the gaps... but he has just enough raw power that it messes with his head and he tries to hit for HRs.

Unfortunate News: Toronto Blue Jays top prospect LHP Brandon Barriera (@brandonbarriera) has undergone a combined traditional TJ ligament replacement along with the internal brace, what is known as a hybrid procedure, performed by Dr. Keith Meister.

We look forward to…

Bisons have to face Paul Skenes tonight, top pitching prospect in the minors with his 100 mph fastball.

Free game on mlb.com. Buffalo has Manoah pitching

Good test for Horwitz, Martinez, Robertson and Jimenez tonight. Skenes is major-league ready. I think Horwitz will hold his own, but eager to see how the others do.

Horwitz just lined a 1-2 100 mph fastball back up the middle with more velocity heading out. Attaboy.
GabrielSyme - Tuesday, April 30 2024 @ 06:51 PM EDT (#445312) #
Through three innings, Manoah is slightly outpitching Skenes, giving up just a single, while the Bisons have a walk and three hits, including a double, against Skenes. Manoah has been efficient, too.

Tonight's game must have given Manoah a nice confidence boost. Hopefully his body feels good after the game.

Let’s hope they avoid last year’s situation and leave him be for a while. With Rodriquez going down I half expect a quick recall.

The one guy they traded for, Varsho had a good April. OPS at .805
Turner has been  a good signing so far.
Schneider has done OK. OPS at .779 but Biggio has been just average with an OPS at .660.
That's the same as IKF. Chapman has an OPS of .646.

Clement has hit a bit more with an OPS of .720.

Right now, Bichette is killing the team with an OPS of .557. They won the game he sat out 6-5.
They haven't been able to score 6 with him in the lineup.
They should rest him maybe once a week, but otherwise, the team is built on Bichette having  an OBP of .330+ (with below average defense), so they can only wait on him. He's 26.

They seemed to hit a break with KK on the shelf (.474 OPS) but it just caused them to play Barger out of position (.112 OPS + bad defense). They need to stick with Schneider in LF.

I've seen Varsho grabbing his leg a few times and I wonder if he's dealing with a quad.

Also, Kirk has not bounced back. .536 OPS. The difference is that Kirk has had 78 PAs, (would have had fewer had Jansen not broken again) and Bo has had 122.
