Buffalo took the lead against Scranton four times but still lost in 12 innings. It was not a good day for their bullpen. It wasn't great for the hitters either who struck out 20 times. New Hampshire could only get three hits in their final game of the season. They ended their season with a whimper.

Buffalo 6 Scranton WB 7 - 12 innings

Somerset 7 New Hampshire 1

NOTES

It was a wild game in Scranton. The game was tied at one all heading to the ninth. Buffalo scored three runs in the top of the ninth, game over? Not so fast, Hayden Juenger was taken deep for a three run home run, game tied. Buffalo scored in the top of the tenth, But Troy Watson let Scranton equalize. Same deal in the eleventh. Buffalo were unable to score in the twelfth but Scranton did, off Paul Fry this time. Fry walked a batter and after intentionally walking a batter to load the bases. A sac fly won the game. It wasn't a good day for the Bisons bullpen. Scranton's other run came in the seventh thanks to a balk and two wild pitches by Rowan Wick.

James Ritchie homered for Buffalo, Raffy Lantigua and Cam Eden had two hits each. The Bisons struck out 20 times. Orelvis and Damiano Palmegiani had tough days, four K's each.

New Hampshire had just three hits, two by Rainer Nunez. One was a home run for the Fisher Cats only run. Cj Van Eyk started and gave up three runs in three innings. He could be heading to the AFL. Alejandro Melean gave up four runs.

Agree with the 3 stars. Triplets?

The lineup for NH was all low batting average players due to very recent promotions to NH. Some V good players were promoted up to Buffalo. They are doing quite well. Somerset is a powerful team that won both halves of the season.

Mitch White since August 18th
29.1 IP, 20 H, 6 ER, 11 BB, 33K. A few too many walks but is starting to look like legit 6th guy again. Really think it's odd how many players/prospects got off to horrible starts and turned things around. System looked useless in first few months, now looks OK.
Mike Green - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 11:20 AM EDT (#437057) #
FWIW, Statcast suggests that Mitch White was unlucky at the start of this year.  Batters did have more barrels than before, but overall his xwOBA was .337 and xERA was 4.85.  Not great, but consistent with a 6th starter off to a so-so start.  It was entirely consistent with his prior career including his time in Los Angeles.  He'd be a perfectly reasonable choice for a low leverage long relief role.

I believe White is a minor league free agent this offseason. And it seems the obvious best career choice for him is to sign with a bad team.
Ducey - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 11:55 AM EDT (#437062) #
I vote for Can Eden to get a star. 2 for 4 with a double, a walk, and his 53rd steal. Rainer was 2-3 with a tater too.
85bluejay - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 12:05 PM EDT (#437064) #
I expect the Jays to add Mitch White to the 40 man roster after the season.
92-93 - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 12:08 PM EDT (#437065) #
Wow, Eden has 53 steals and has only been caught 4 times. There's probably more value in carrying him on the MLB roster than Clement.
Jonny German - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 01:39 PM EDT (#437071) #
Good point 85, I hadn’t considered that the team can simply put him back on the 40. And there doesn’t look to be a crunch ahead of the Rule 5 draft this year, Adam Macko is the only prospect who clearly warrants being added.
Mike Green - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 01:46 PM EDT (#437072) #
Eden is 119-11 stealing bases over the last 3 years. It's not a one season fluke. If they would like to use him in a pinch-running role in the playoffs, they should get him to the big leagues as soon as possible and use him in a relatively low pressure role a few times.
Marc Hulet - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 02:30 PM EDT (#437080) #
I feel like the Mitch White ship has sailed... with no MiLB options remaining, he's not overly valuable. Bowden Francis still has a milb option and you could add Andrew Bash to the 40-man... his stuff/ceiling is similar to White's but he still has three MiLB option years, which makes him a much cleaner fit as a 12/13th arm.
85bluejay - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 03:55 PM EDT (#437085) #
Perhaps the Jays will move on from White but given the dearth of starting pitching, White has value.
Ducey - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 05:59 PM EDT (#437097) #
Whether they stick with White likely depends if he has tweaked something to get the better results and they think that will carry forward.

If its just luck, then I would expect they still could trade him, rather than letting him walk for nothing. SP are always in demand
SK in NJ - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#437100) #
White was apparently hitting 97 mph in one of his recent starts. As mentioned, if there was an adjustment that has lead to performance/velocity improvement, then I could see the Jays stick with him if they think they have unlocked something. If not, and it's just viewed as a hot streak, then I doubt they'd use a 40 man roster spot on him, especially given the lack of minor league options.
uglyone - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 06:32 PM EDT (#437101) #
They're probably still surprised he cleared waivers. I doubt they dump him.
hypobole - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 07:53 PM EDT (#437109) #
White was throwing his 4 seamer 92/93/94 before demotion and averaged 93.8 on the season.

His last Bisons' start, he threw 37 4 seamers - 6 93, 9 94, 13 95, 9 96, topping out at 96.8.
Nigel - Monday, September 18 2023 @ 08:07 PM EDT (#437112) #
As uglyone says - they worked really hard to avoid having to send White down in the first place. They kept him in Toronto long after it was clear that he needed to go. From that, I think it was clear that they believed he wouldn't get through waivers and that they would like to keep him. While what Marc says makes sense, I think that tells you they are likely to stretch to keep him. I wasn't overly impressed but I suppose there are worse AAAA options out there for pitching depth for 2024.

Orelvis won player of the week. I really hope we have a stud in him.
lexomatic - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 12:04 PM EDT (#437132) #
I hope we really stop using the word "stud" to describe athletes.
It's dehumanizing (comparing people to livestock for breeding purposes) & perpetuates rape culture with all that ugliness that happens with sexual assault in amateur, minor, & pro sports.

I also hope Orelvis is really good and keeps adjusting.
John Northey - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 01:12 PM EDT (#437135) #
Good point on language - so easy to use terms we've heard all our lives, especially in our youth, that we don't think twice about but are actually poor terms to use.

Orelvis I'm hoping we look at in a few years as a guy we wonder why he didn't come up earlier. I fully expect him to be full-time at some position in 2024 by May, and maybe to start the season. If he has a strong year then he'd probably get the extra service time added due to the new rules. If he doesn't then he'll probably go back down at some point ala Delgado in 1994 and regain that years service time. Given how our GM has operated to date I expect him to be in AAA for April/May and maybe June depending on how he does (I expect him to dominate AAA if given a second season there) and how whoever is at 3B/2B up here does (Schneider/Biggio with Espinal mixed in) and of course how his minor league competition does (Barger and any others).

I will try not to use that word. I am not offended by being corrected. What word is a good substitute? Being called very good or a star is not a good enough description for me. Super star is too good because that describes R Acuna and Orelvis is not yet there. So somewhere in the middle is what I want a word for.
Joe - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 02:09 PM EDT (#437137) #
I feel like I've picked up that scouts often use "guy" for someone who'll probably be a big leaguer, and "dude" for someone who seens sure-fire amazing, but I can't actually find references for that.
bpoz - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 02:25 PM EDT (#437138) #
Dude sounds good. Thanks Joe.
uglyone - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 02:28 PM EDT (#437139) #
feel free to call me a stud.

Thanks. I don't have a replacement term. As far as I can tell it's been my own hill since thinking about it - too late to be proud of it, but it definitely stood out before that.
Frankly I'd just experiment with stuff, though I should pay attention to see if people are making a conscious choice to avoid it
jerjapan - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 03:27 PM EDT (#437143) #
Lexi, love you man, but strong disagree with language policing archaic metaphors.
Who thinks of cows first when they think of studs?  I think of young pro athletes and guys who are good with ladies.

'Perpetuates rape culture'?  Yeesh.
Bpoz, be you bro.
I could see the team hanging on to White.  We traded our best in-house starting depth, outside of Teidmann, for some 100+ mph bullpen heat.

But Marc is right - the options have huge significance at that point on the depth chart.
That's why I can see them adding Lantigua and giving him the Lukes treatement.

There is a lot of 40 man detritus right now, it's just going to come down to internal valuations.

hypobole - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 03:34 PM EDT (#437144) #
I don't agree with your logic, but that's immaterial. You seem to feel very strongly about it so will not use that term.
Nigel - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 04:18 PM EDT (#437145) #
I really don’t agree either. But thank you hypobole, the world could use a lot more of that attitude in communities (real or virtual), an excellent thought (and, because sarcasm is hard to detect, that was a serious compliment).
bpoz - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 04:59 PM EDT (#437148) #
lexomatic your comment was fine with me. I feel "impact player" describes what I meant. Fred McGriff but he was LH, V Wells power but gets the SBs. There has to be a former Jay that is a good comparison. If/when I figure out that former Jay I need to find a spot in the batting order where he fits in.
hypobole - Tuesday, September 19 2023 @ 05:19 PM EDT (#437149) #
Thanks, Nigel.
