Wes Parsons pitched five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. Chad Green gave up a two-run homer to Brett Baty and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning. New Hampshire had nine singles and three walks but could only produce two runs. Leo Jiménez and Miguel Hiraldo had two-hit games with Hiraldo and Riley Tirotta getting RBI singles. Luis Quiñones got the loss with five runs allowed over 4-2/3 innings but struck out six. Adrian Hernández matched three walks with three strikeouts and stranded a runner over two shutout frames. The C's pitching staff racked up 20 strikeouts with Ian Churchill striking out three to go with 11 from Adam Macko and five from Conor Larkin. Naswell Paulino got a punchout after giving up the first run of the game in the top of the 10th thanks to two bunts moving the placed runner at second all the way home. Gabby Martinez got his second hit of the game to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th before Estiven Machado won it with an RBI double inside the right field line. Machado also drew a walk to reach base twice. Dasan Brown and Josh Kasevich also had a base knock. Vancouver improved to 72-42 thanks to its 11th walk-off win of the year.

I see a meaningful role for C Eden as a 4/5th OF and PR on the Jays next year due to his D and speed. Can we afford to add an OF with better health, youth and O but okay D for next year? I don't means spending money necessarily to add. Springer will still get days off playing on the field next year IMO.

It would be nice if Atkins does not have to add much bullpen help for next year.

Sorry to hear that the DSL and FCL have ended their seasons.

There were some positives by Jays prospects. Some 2023 17 YO DSL signees did V well IMO. They should get to the US next year I expect. Catcher Faruk De La Cruz got a lot of ABs C, 1B and DH but his O did not improve so I assume that his catcher D was liked by the org. I liked Maykel Minoso who also played a lot at 2B & C with good O. Both 18 YO playing 2nd year in the DSL.

Fernando Perez at 19YO in the FCL threw a few 1H games and 1 no hit game. Then there is the scouting report that says 96mph FB. Hope he has some good secondaries. Only 50IP this year.

Don't think teams carry these kinds of players anymore generally and doubt the Jays would. Even if they wanted this kind of guy, they could get someone better for not much.

The Bisons have released reliever Junior Fernandez.

Cobi Johnson retired. Johnson had TJ surgery and was trying to come back. Johnson is the son of former Blue Jay Dane Johnson. Dane pitched for Jays, was the minor league pitching coordinator and major league bullpen coach.

Leo Jimenez now up to 292/376/448 w 30BB/51 K in 73 games.

He is 301/385/500 in the last 3 months.

Might be the guy that bumps Bo to 2B.

Bo feels Jeterish to me, I doubt anyone will bump him to 2B in the near future.
Mike Green - Wednesday, August 23 2023 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#434889) #
I agree that it is unlikely that Bo is moved, at the very least until he is at the end of his 20s.

Jeter is in some ways a poor role model. He was selfish, and it's a team game.
GabrielSyme - Wednesday, August 23 2023 @ 02:31 PM EDT (#434890) #
Bo and Jeter are not defensively comparable. The defensive metrics saw Bo as awful last year, but he's otherwise been within easy reach of average. I think it's fair to think Bo is below-average at SS, but Jeter was historically terrible.

If Leo Jimenez continues to develop, he will at least allow the Jays to consider moving off of Bo (trade/FA) if the contract value is too high.

Orelvis was not in the starting lineup today but Spencer Horwitz was hit by a pitch and removed. Orelvis took his place. He proceeded to go two run single, double, three run home run. Five RBI on a day he didn't start.

Pragmatically, you just don’t see stars get moved off a glamour position for a merely good prospect. Bo’s a star. Jimenez is looking promising but isn’t a top 10-20 prospect in all of baseball. There is zero chance of Bo moving off SS for Jimenez unless Bo is the one suggesting it.
greenfrog - Wednesday, August 23 2023 @ 05:49 PM EDT (#434922) #
Should the Jays bite the bullet and offer Bo a Devers/Bogaerts-like contract this off-season? Or plan to let him walk in free agency after 2025?

If the Jays enter into discussions with Bo about a long-term contract, would they need to talk about moving him off SS eventually? Or is that issue better left unaddressed?
uglyone - Wednesday, August 23 2023 @ 05:58 PM EDT (#434925) #
Bo's been pretty solid defensively this year i thought. He's 25yrs old and seems to have improved.
greenfrog - Wednesday, August 23 2023 @ 06:11 PM EDT (#434927) #
Agreed. But let’s say you’re negotiating a 10-year contract and you anticipate a possible move from SS to 2B after five years or so. Do you discuss that, or
leave it unaddressed?
bpoz - Wednesday, August 23 2023 @ 06:33 PM EDT (#434929) #
The jays seem to have a lot of faith in Orelvis IMO based on how they promoted him. In 2021 112 ABs in Vancouver where he struggled with a .214 Avg but the 9 Hrs were impressive. His AA experience was bad except for the Hrs until about May 10th when he developed plate discipline. One can say that he learned fast about plate discipline.

At 103 ABs in AAA he will end up with more in Buffalo this year than the 112 ABs in Vancouver. He is still young for AAA.

Ricky Tiedemann was pulled in the second inning today after 54 pitches and 2 runs.  His ERA in double A is 6.75.

First, I'd definitely be trying to tie him up to a Boggarts style contract - he just keeps proving he's the guy you build around.

As for the defensive side of things, you have to at least start that conversation, but you can find ways to do that even in an environment that requires a healthy ego. You need to say that the conversation isn't about today, and that it's just an inevitable matter of aging. You indicate what you're going to be monitoring, and that any decisions will be made together and with lots of lead time and opportunities to try to correct any issues... unless someone like Lindor became available.
99BlueJaysWay - Thursday, August 24 2023 @ 02:39 PM EDT (#434981) #
On the defensive conversation, it’s hard to say without knowing more. However, my gut is to say that any discussion, however reasonable, that carries a risk of Bo not signing should only be entered into if absolutely necessary. I don’t see this as necessary.

A hypothetical discussion only damages the Jays chances in my view. If he gets to Free Agency, there will absolutely be teams that are ready to guarantee him a starting spot at SS. Look at Bogaerts as a recent example. Having the conversation now puts the Jays at a competitive disadvantage, assuming it’s important to Bo (we are all under the impression that it is)I
.

If he needs to move in 5 years, you have that discussion in 5 years. The decision to move him will be highly situational, and it’s impossible to be sure when the Jays might want to make that move (if they ever even do).

Trying to split up Orelvis' AAA sample as close to 3rds as possible:

* First 38pa: 10.5bb%, 18.4k%, .269babip, .242avg, .152iso, 74wrc+
* Next 42pa: 9.5bb%, 31.0k%, .348babip, .250avg, .167iso, 85wrc+
* Last 40pa: 10.0bb%, 32.5k%, .368babip, .324avg, .412iso, 154wrc+

He's striking out way too much but at least the contact and the power have shown up now and the patience has been steady.
