Bo Bichette homered in the first inning for Buffalo, singled and added a sac fly. Orelvis singled in a run in the third and added a sac fly. Rafael Lantigua and Ernie Clement had two hits each.

Wes Parsons started and went five innings, just one run allowed.

In the first NH game Ricky Tiedemann threw 3.2 innings and took the loss. Ricky didn't allow a run when he was in the game but left a single and a walk on base. Mason Fluharty followed with back to back doubles letting the two runners score. Ricky struck out five, and threw 56 pitches. The Fisher Cat hitters had just four singles. Miguel Hiraldo had two of them.

The NH hitters saved all their hits for game two. Rainer Nunez hit a three run home run in the first inning. Damiano Palmegiani added a grand slam in the second inning. Dylan Rock his a solo shot in the third. Alan Roden was 4-4 with two doubles. Rainer was 2-2 with two walks and four RBI. Miguel Hiraldo had two hits, a repeat of game one.

Michael Dominguez has started well in AA. On Thursday he went five innings, five hits, two walks and five K's.

Devereaux Harrison has pitched well for Vancouver this season but he was hit around on Thursday. He was charged with seven runs on nine hits over three plus innings. Eugene hit three home runs off him.

Just seven hits for the C's, Jommer Hernandez had three of them, two doubles.

Brennan Orf doubled in two runs in the first inning and that lead held up until the eighth inning. The bullpen couldn't hold the lead so the game went to extra innings. Dunedin scored in the tenth, but so did the Phillies. Dunedin scored in the eleventh but the Phils got two, game over.

Kendry Rojas started for the Jays and went five shutout innings, four hits, one walk and five K's.

Roden has posted a wRC+ of 149 in A+ (323 PA) and 137 in AA (102 PA) this year, a standout performance overall. He’ll be 24 in December.

Tedemann is very good at controlling the strike zone according to the gameday diagram. And he has good stuff. 3 Hr in 79IP last year, 0 in 25IP this year. He turns 22 today.

Orelvis age 19 had 28 Hr. 30 Hr at 20. 22 hr so far at 21 and his other numbers have improved to good I think.

Roden has been fantastic but is getting criticized by some about his age. If he was 2 years younger he would be considered very special. But that is life!! This is his 1st full season and Nigel says that he hustles which I respect a lot. Next year I will try to see his GIDP.

Some players we had to be patient with. Davis Schneider took a while to get here. C Biggio had a good start his first 2 years then faltered now he is doing a lot better if you don't count April. Maybe he is good in 2024 & 2025.

I believe in being patient.

Looking at prospect ages is a piece of the puzzle but by no means a deciding factor on value/upside. It's absolutely important to look at experience, too. You can't knock Rodon for being 23 in AA when it's only his first full year in pro ball. Players need time to acclimatize and develop skills... It's more about how quickly they learn/adjust. Rodon is showing that he can do that quickly. Hiraldo is 22 but just in AA for the first time in six years. I can tell you from watching him a lot, he doesn't learn/adjust quickly and lacks both instincts and focus.

My only concern with Rodon is, like Horwitz, the lack of power. But Rodon has a better/stronger build and the lack of power is really all due to his swing mechanics. He has a flat bat path and also cuts his power off by keeping both hands on the bat throughout his swing. His instincts and feel for the game are excellent like Varsho (but he's a much better hitter) and that also helps him be an above-average right fielder.

13th rounder Brennan Orf is another data-darling like Roden was out of college. He has a 23.9% BB-rate to 26.8% K-rate so far in Dunedin (good for a 136 wRC+). Little power so far but he's one to track next season.

I think Roden realizes that he needs to develop more power. A lot of positives were said about Rainer Nunez this off season. He too is developing slow but yesterday his Hr had 110mph Exit Velo but just 9 Hr this year.

not knocking guys like Roden for BEING IN AA, just noting that at that age a guy has to hit at a very high level in AA to get excited about.

as for Roden in particular, he is hitting solidly at AA. The concern spot with him is the lack of power so far, which is especially concerning for an older prospect who apparently is mostly a bat-first prospect.

Marc. he doesn't learn/adjust quickly and lacks both instincts and focus.

When I saw Vladdy as a teenager, the above statement would have applied to him. Did you see that as well?

Angels are obviously in desepration mode, but this kid has actually kinda earned it - the Angels are calling up their 11th overall pick this year Nolan Schanuel to the bigs.

He's 21 putting up a 163wrc+ in AA. With super elite BB/K rates.

If I were to nitpick i'd note that he's riding high on babip and has shown no power so far, but even then there's a decent chance he's an upgrade for the Angels.

I wouldn't describe Roden as a bat-first prospect exactly.  He's 19-3 stealing bases so far this year and by all accounts plays defence well.  He doesn't look like a leadoff hitter, but neither did Pete
Rose or Wade Boggs.
uglyone - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 11:26 AM EDT (#434568) #
That's good to hear. I saw poor grades for both speed and defense on fangraphs so i just assumed.
Ducey - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 11:49 AM EDT (#434572) #
That Wade Boggs guy will never make it. He has no power.

After seeing Roden's wRC+, I wondered how Orelvis was doing in Buffalo.  It turns out that the context adjustment is pretty significant.  His wRC+ of 103 isn't much better than the numbers he posted in single A and double A in 2021 and 2022.  His line-drive rates are still under 20% and he's posting a BABIP of .317 with a HR/FB of 17%.

The hype is up for Orelvis, and I wonder if the organization will capitalize.  I suspect that Barger is a better player.
uglyone - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 12:28 PM EDT (#434576) #
gotta look at the learning curve tho.

take out his first 3gms and Orelvis is at a 116. Over his last 53pa he's at a 135. Over his last 8gms he's at a 168.

At Orelvis' age Barger was putting up a 120 in A ball.

greenfrog - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 01:02 PM EDT (#434578) #
Not that BA is omniscient, but it's worth noting that Orelvis is currently #58 on their top 100, while Barger (who is two years older than Martinez) is not on their top 100 at all.

It would be nice if he refined his defensive game over the next couple of years, so that his value doesn't depend entirely on his offensive production.
Ducey - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 01:16 PM EDT (#434579) #
Orelvis and Barger might make a good platoon.
Marc Hulet - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 02:18 PM EDT (#434584) #
Yes the FanGraphs rating on Roden's defense is downright wrong. He's an excellent fielder in RF and a very good baserunning (although with avg speed).

Congrats to Schanuel. I know a few of us were hoping he fell to us. Seems early, but they must really like what they're seeing beyond just the overall stat line.
GabrielSyme - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 06:54 PM EDT (#434595) #
My unscientific impression is that outside of elite college bats - the kind that get drafted in the first round usually - college hitters are hard to evaluate because even if they are succeeding like Roden is, they rarely get moved quickly enough to have an impressive age vs. level.
#2JBrumfield - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 07:41 PM EDT (#434598) #
Connor O'Halloran needed just one pitch to get his first professional out for the Dunedin Blue Jays. He got a comebacker to the mound and struck out the second batter he faced for his first pro K in Clearwater on the way to a perfect first frame.
#2JBrumfield - Friday, August 18 2023 @ 07:48 PM EDT (#434599) #
Hamilton native Bryce Arnold just belted his first professional home run for Dunedin.
