NOTES

The Bisons found their bats again. They scored five runs in the second inning highlighted by a three run home run from Addison Barger. Barger was 1-3 with two walks. Spencer Horwitz had three hits and a walk. Nathan Lukes had two doubles.

Wes Parsons was the starting pitcher and he wasn't good, six runs allowed in 5.1 innings. He did get the win though. Newly signed Rowan Wick got the save.

New Hampshire's game was suspended after two innings. Michael Dominguez was making his AA debut. He struck out two and walked one in his two innings.

Vancouver lost in 10 innings. Cade Doughty homered, singled and walked. He had a slow start to the season but has been improving in the second half. In July he hit .299 with a.959 OPS. He also reduced his strikeout rate. And August has started even better. Josh Kasevich is a similar story. His July was his best month of the season. Kasevich was 3-5 on Friday.

Ricky Tiedemann started for Dunedin and struck out nine in three innings. That was the end of the good news for Dunedin. They had just four hits and lost 5-0. Tiedemann should be on to AA next week surely.

In the first FCL game eighth round pick Braden Barry hit his first pro home run, a three run one. CJ Van Eyk made another rehab start, two shutout innings. Nolan Perry started the second FCL game and had his best start of the season. He threw five shutout innings, four hits, two walks, seven K's.

The DSL Jays had 17 hits. It was nice to see that three of the Jays big money signings were among the hits. Enmanuel Bonilla had four hits including a grand slam. He drove in six. David Guzman was 4-5 with two walks. Railin Tejada had two triples. Box fave Aneudi Escanio triples, singled and walked twice. All of those four hitters are hitting just under or over .300. Bonilla and Guzman are 17, Tejada 18 and Escanio 19.

FG has Longo's ranking of all 55 prospects traded by the deadline. Robberse was 12th, Kloff 28th and Sammy was 40th. Matt Svanson he had 54th, the only guy lower ranked  was traded for cash.

Kloff is pitching at AAA Memphis and Sem seems to have been assigned there as well..

J. C. Masson , the kid from Quebec drafted in 2019, has been released.

Barger really seems to be rounding into form since the All-star break, good power and more walks than Ks. Has to be a strong candidate for a September call-up.

2022 13th Rd pick Bo Bonds made his debut today.

You can only add one position player in September, so Barger's chances of a call-up likely depend on Bichette and the rest of the team's health.

Tiedemann now has 15K and 1BB in his 6 innings in Dunedin.

With the roster crunch coming I see no path for Barger getting a call-up. In the old days of a max 40 man roster maybe, but not now with a 28 man roster limit - 1 more pitcher, 1 more hitter. Once Bo returns then one of Schneider-Espinal-Biggio has to go down (others hitters with options are Vlad, Jansen, Varsho, Kirk - I don't see any of them going down). I'd send down Espinal myself with his negative fWAR (negative there on offense and defense this year and his baserunning ...well... less said the better but was +0.2 before today). Biggio also is all negatives except baserunning (+0.7). New guy Schneider is all positive and I see no way to take him out if he keeps hitting and his track record in AAA says he should keep that going.

The battle for 3B/LF/2B for 2024 has begun - Schneider with the early lead, Otto Lopez should've had a shot but his 637 OPS in AAA this year probably killed it, Barger in AAA hitting 236/351/408 has a chance, Orelvis Martinez is there too with his AA/AAA line of 227/334/468. Rafael Lantigua forcing his way into the conversation too by hitting 288/417/471 plus Tanner Morris at 282/371/404. Morris & Lantigua are both 25 and not on the 40 man though. I expect the Jays to resign only one of Chapman or Merryfield thus leaving a slot open for all those kids to fight over, maybe 2 if 2B is seen as open. KK might be resigned thus closing LF most likely but I doubt it unless he is happy being #4 out there. Funny how he has the 3rd most OOA in CF in the majors at 8 (#1 is Julio Rodriguez in Seattle at 11 in 200+ more innings) but is 2nd best on the Jays as Varsho has 5 in just 284 innings vs KK's 707 innings. Per inning Varsho is the best around but strangely has -1 in LF (makes no sense). For funny, UZR/150 which used to be seen as good but lately is seen as a poor measure has Gurriel as #1 in LF in the majors with a crazy 20.1 score vs Varsho at 5.9. Yeah, that kills that stat for me.

So I expect at least 1 kid to take a position in 2024, but who will it be? Schneider (has AAA time in LF/2B/3B) has the lead right now, Barger showed a ton in spring last year and if healthy has to be a favorite, Orelvis I expect to do at least half a year in AAA in 2024. The others all are dark horses in that race.

John

I could see them exercising the option on Whit and letting Chappy, Belt and KK go.

Then sign more of a RH bopper for LF (let's call him Teo) and stopgap 3B.

Use Horwitz as DH/ 1B, Davis S/ Biggio/ Whit at 2B, Teo/Whit/Davis in LF, Teo/Horwitz/ Kirk/ whomever at DH.

1. Springer RF
2. Bo SS
3. Vlad 1B
4. Teo DH/LF
5. Jansen C
6. Varsho CF
7. Whit LF/ 2B
8. Davis S LF/ 2B
9. Interim dude 3B
10 Horwitz
11 Biggio LF/ 2B
12 Kirk
13 Espinal backup SS
