The Story So Far (Abandon all hope, ye who enter here...)

After a promising April, the Blue Jays visited Fenway Park for four games and cries of "MayDay" soon echoed through the land...

Mon May 1: Toronto 5 Boston 6 - A see-saw affair, that began with the Red Sox jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead against Berrios on doubles from Verdugo and Yoshida and a single from Turner. The Jays struck back immediately - Jansen and Kiermaier walked and Bichette delivered a three run homer. The Red Sox chased Berrios with a three spot of their own in the sixth. Duran led off with a homer, Casas walked, and Valdez homered to put the Sox up 5-3. The Jays tied it in the eighth - a Biggio double and a Bichette single factored in, but a pair of errors from Hernandez at short made it all possible. And so we went to the bottom of the ninth, and Verdugo hit Romano's third pitch over the wall.

Tue 2 May: Toronto 6 Boston 7 - The Red Sox painstakingly assembled a 3-0 lead against Kikuchi, scoring a single run in the second, third, and forth innings. But the Jays put six on the board in the fifth inning, the big blows being Guerrero's two run single and Varsho's three-run homer. But prosperity? Who needs it? In the bottom half, Kikuchi hit the leadoff man and gave up a couple of singles, and it was a 6-5 game by the time Pop got out of the inning. A homer by Wong tied things up in the sixth, and it was still 6-6 when Swanson came on in the eighth. And after Wong led off with his second homer, it wasn't 6-6 anymore.

Wed 3 May: Toronto 3 Boston 8 - Solo homers by Varsho and Guerrero staked the Jays to an early 2-0 lead; the Red Sox tied it in the fourth with four hits against Manoah. The Jays went ahead again when Pivetta balked Kiermeier home, but the Red Sox scored three times in their half on a Chapman error, a hit batter, and three more hits. They added a single runs against three successive relievers - Bass, Richards, Pearson - to pad the final score.

Thu 4 May 4: Toronto 5 Boston 11 - The Bostons abused Gausman early on, with a Yoshida solo homer in the first inning and five more runs in the second on a walk and six hits. Guerrero's solo homer in the fourth put Toronto on the board, but the Red Sox scored two more in their half to finally chase Gausman from the game. The Jays briefly looked like they might be able to make a game of it, scoring three to cut the lead to 8-4, but Boston soon put up three of their own against Pop.

Well, maybe things will be better when we get them in our house. Or maybe not.

Fri 30 June: Boston 5 Toronto 0 - A pitcher's duel between Paxton and Berrios, scoreless until Turner's solo homer leading off the fifth. Duran and Yoshida added solo shots of their own an inning later, but Paxton wasn't even going to need them on this day. The Jays managed just three singles all evening against him and two relievers.

Sat 1 July: Boston 7 Toronto 6 - This was tied at 2-2 heading to the fifth, thanks to solo homers from Guerrero and Bichette for the home side and a two run shot from Devers for the bad fellows. But the Red Sox got Kikuchi for three runs in the fifth and stretched the lead to 6-2 an inning later. The Jays closed to within a run after Chapman's two run homer in the eighth. Turner's leadoff homer against Swanson in the ninth provided a key insurance run, as in the bottom of the inning hits by Springer and Bichette put the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate. Belt fanned for the second out, but Guerrero delivered a base hit to score Springer. Alas, Bichette was thrown at home to end the game.

Sun 2 July: Boston 5 Toronto 4 - A Bichette single scoring Kiermaier and Springer put Toronto up 3-2 in the third, and Belt's second homer made it 4-2, but the Red Sox had made Gausman throw a lot of pitches and he was pulled after just five innings. And for once Mayza didn't have it, quickly allowing a couple of hits and forcing Garcia to come in to escape the sixth inning jam. Which he did, but the Sox tied it with a couple against Swanson in the seventh. And they broke the tie when Verdugo led off against Romano in the ninth and whacked a solo homer and hadn't we already heard that story?

You will have noticed that four of those seven losses were by a single run. There's always a bit of bad luck when that happens. As for the other three...

The Red Sox don't seem to have decided who's pitching the rest of the weekend. They may figure that it doesn't much matter.

Doing a quick check at BR for vs Boston stats...
Varsho: 333/370/625 this year, so don't be shocked if he does well.
800s: Belt, Vlad, and Bo.
700s: Espinal
600s: Springer
500s: KK, Chapman, DeJong (as a Cardinal)
400s: Jansen
300s: Merrifield, Kirk, Biggio

Yeah, I don't have a lot of hope either for this series, but one can still dream. This is baseball where the 1899 Spiders won just 20 games but 3 of those were vs a 95 win team. So don't lose hope, anything can happen. Heck, the Jays could even sweep the weekend - better odds of that than of me winning LottoMax (especially since I didn't buy a ticket).

I think Varsho's success just came during a bit of a streak. He's not our Mountcastle.

Turner has missed the last 3 games with a heel injury suffered when he stepped on first base.
He's not on the IL, but he's not in the lineup either.

Trevor Story has asked to keep rehabbing with AAA a bit longer.
He probably won't play at all in this series.

So, the story here is basically the left bats.

Urias, picked up earlier, has been recalled to play 2B and Arroyo DFAed.

On the pitching side, they don't seem to have 5 starters.
Paxton starts Friday. There could be a bullpen day and maybe Pivetta gets a start?

In theory, Schneider is ideally suited for Fenway. RH pull hitter who has put over 70% of his contact in the air.

Schneider does have a pretty similar minor league profile as Cavan Biggio.

So the Jays follow-up one of their most disappointing series of the year with the best start to a game they’ve had all year with 2 homers on 3 pitches.

A lot of people were adamantly opposed to the Jays bringing Manoah back to the majors when they did. But he has made steady progress. He’s holding his own tonight. Two runs allowed through 5 IP in Fenway against this lineup, with a low pitch count, is very good work. He confidently pitched his way out of a jam (based on flukey hits) in the fifth, striking out Verdugo on three pitches (a slider and two 94 MPH fastballs).
BlueJayWay - Friday, August 04 2023 @ 09:11 PM EDT (#433596) #

Love when a 28th rounder makes it. He is the first 28th rounder of the 2017 draft to make it. Kodi Whitley in the 27th already made it (0.3 WAR), Josh Rojas in the 26th (3.2 WAR), Aaron Ashby in the 25th (-0.9, DNS signed after going in 4th round in 2018), 23rd Matt Peacock (0.4), 22nd Janson Junk (-0.3), and the 21st finally has 2 guys making it (Chas McCormick 6.6 and Paul Campbell -1.0). Going the other direction the 29th has 3 guys as does the 30th, 5 from the 32nd (2 DNS but redrafted and made it), 33rd 1, 34th 3, 35th 2 (both DNS), 36th 2 (1 DNS), 37th 3 (2 DNS), 38th 1 (DNS), 39th 2 (both DNS), 40th 1 (DNS). Clearly guys drafted post 20th round (no longer happens) rarely make it unless they are redrafted later on. Out of 600 players drafted in 2017 from round 21-40 only 30 have made it so far - so 1 for every 20 drafted. I suspect we'd find similar numbers from further back. For every Rowdy Tellez you get 20 Sean Ross' (Jays 40th round pick in 2017 who DNS, played in college in 2022 and in the MLB Draft League this year with a 603 OPS at age 25).

He is the 7th Jay to make it from that draft so far - Ryan Noda and Riley Adams both have 1 WAR but under 2, Ty Tice is at 0.1, while Kevin Smith, Nate Pearson, and Zach Logue are all in the negatives still. Hagen Danner was a round 2 pick who still has a good shot (AAA reliever with good K and BB #'s but poor HR totals) Logan Warmoth was the Jays first pick that year and is now in Seattle's AAA with a 754 OPS at age 27 (lost in the minor league rule 5 draft - ie: he wasn't even judged good enough to protect on the AAA roster).

So congrats to Davis Schneider who beat the odds, first to be drafted, then to make the majors. He was the 133rd ever to hit a home run in his first PA in the majors. Bert Campaneris hit a home run on the first ML pitch he saw in 1964 btw - I'm sure I'm not the only one who wondered if anyone did that. Lets hope it is a sign of things to come - Jays could sure use that.
John Northey - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 12:07 AM EDT (#433605) #
Best 28th round pick ever for the Jays will be hard to top though - RHP Woody Williams 30.2 WAR. RP Darren Hall is next at 2.2, then at 0.2 is Steve Sinclair, and -0.2 is Matt Dermody. These guys were drafted in 1988-1986-1991-2013 respectively. The 3 positives late in Gillicks run here, the other by AA's crew.
John Northey - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 12:10 AM EDT (#433606) #
The last Jays 28th rounder was Gabriel Ponce - currently in AA as a relief pitcher with 11.4 K/9 (good) and 5.1 BB/9 (not good), just 24 he has a chance but it is shrinking daily unless he gains control quickly - he is rule 5 eligible and won't be protected and could be released.

Pitching with an extra day of rest, Manoah possibly had his best start of the year. 3-8, now.
I hated the walk to the 8th batter. The guy was DFAed because he can't hit.
Make him put the ball in play. Don't try to make him chase.

The Cinderella story continues for Schneider.
I like the bat speed and the hustle.
I probably won't like the defense.

Varsho was probably the best player today.
A HR. A hustler infield hit. A walk. A good play on a shallow pop up. Scored from first on what might have been a single.

Kirk went 1 for 5 with 2 double play ground balls.
That is pretty bad for the DH slot.
Should probably try the hit and run or even bunting. Maybe fake a bunt and swing away.

DeJong's best AB so far was hustling to break a double play.
Still no hit as a Blue Jays.

A good night for all of Schneider-Merrifield-Varsho-Springer creates a decision: do you sit one of them today, or do you give Kiermaier or Belt a 2nd consecutive day off?

My answer is sit both the veteran lefty bats and count on the Sox pitching LH Chris Murphy in a bulk role, as fits his usage pattern.

I know at least one poster thought we had a terrible deadline. He should be glad he's not a Mariners fan - maybe. Two years ago they were a game out in the WC race and their deadline move was trading away their closer. This year, further back, but still in it and with the easiest remaining schedule of any playoff contender. Their big move? Trading away their closer.

Contrast them to the Angels, who sat a half game ahead of Seattle at the deadline. They not only kept Ohtani, but traded 4 good prospects, a Top 100 , a 40+ and 2 40's, to shore up their team for a playoff push. They've lost all 4 games since the deadline. They are now 5 out, with 3 teams between themselves and the Jays. The Mariners have won 3 of 4 and are now are the closest team to us, only 2 1/2 games back. They are also 20-10 since the end of June.

Davis Schneider's card is from Bluefield, not Pulaski. Sigh. I passed through Bluefield in February 2020 and the owner of a restaurant gave me the card.

Pulaski is on my mind since seeing the statue of Casimir Pulaski in Savannah earlier this year. I was doing minor league updates for da Box in 2006 when the Blue Jays had an affiliate in Pulaski.

Trading away "closers" is smart business. Getting Abraham Toro back is not. I would have loved to see the Jays move Romano for a bat.

Using Hicks for the 3rd time in 4 days with a 4-run lead was unnecessary, and will likely lead to his unavailability in a tighter game in the near future.

scottt - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 12:59 PM EDT (#433616) #
Hicks is fine. He was sitting on 7 days of rest.
Swanson can close.

Trading away "closers" with years of control is not a good more for a contender.
Swapping a free agent is fine.

The Mariners GM is addicted to making trades.
It's the owner of the Angels, not the GM who dictates the moves and it goes from bad to terrible.
That's the team that gave away a second draft pick to sign an injured Syndergaard on a one year deal.

scottt - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 01:10 PM EDT (#433617) #
These extension opportunities don't really exist.
Hicks' agent will happily talk to every interested team in free agency.

On paper, Manoah, Berrios and Bassitt look like a weekend for Boston to sit their right hand bats.
Swanson, Richards, Mayza and Cabrera are great options to deal with the Boston left bats if the Jays can get to them with a lead.

In the past, Berrios had his share of struggles pitching after Manoah.
I prefer to separate these guys with Gausman who throws more vertically and the 2 lefties.

Kirk can't tag but a player always fake a tag just in case the throw is in the seat.
Espinal didn't know if he had to watch Kirk or the ball. Always watch the runner.

The Boston 3B coach actually signaled a homerun, so McGuire jogged home while doing a victory sign.

I didn't realize Richards is on the IL.
I'm sure the coach doesn't want to use Francis.
He's there to save the pen if there's a blow out.

Swanson is not a ground ball pitcher. He gets lots of flyballs.
Today, because this is Fenway, he tried to pitch low in the zone and it didn't work.

All is well that ends well, but in what world is that bunt not a hit?

scottt - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 07:25 PM EDT (#433656) #
The guys they added are actually good baserunners. Varsho and KK are elite. Belt usually plays it safe.
It's the guys who have been on this team for years that are blundering.

Is it a bigger problem than the hitting into double plays?
Kirk extends his arms to make weak contact and put the ball in play.
Why does he do that? A strike out here is better than a weak ground ball.
Swing and put that ball in the air already!

Lost in everything else that happened was  Springer going 4 for 4 and reaching base all 5 times. Hoping he's fully out of that funk.
Nigel - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 08:18 PM EDT (#433659) #
Just to further the base running point. The Jays are third from the bottom in bs% at 74% (league average is 80%). They also have the second most non stolen base outs on the bases after Cincinnati. And Cincinnati are trying to be ridiculously aggressive on the bases and trying crazy stuff in order to put pressure on the defense - the Jays are, um, not doing any of that.

Springer and Varsho looked miles better today at the plate. Fingers crossed - those two coming in from the cold would make a massive difference.
Chuck - Saturday, August 05 2023 @ 09:23 PM EDT (#433660) #
They also have the second most non stolen base outs on the bases after Cincinnati.

Imagine how much worse it could be if they had Carlos Febles as their third base coach wantonly twirling his home run finger willy nilly.

Want to see REALLY pathetic baserunning? Stanton yesterday thrown out at the plate. If Billy Martin was alive and running the Yankees Stanton would be benched for a LOOOOONG time over that and might even have gotten a punch to the face. Boone was defending him post game which was sad to read. I mean, c'mon, if he was hurt OK, but he wasn't. Kirk runs faster than that, heck, I run faster than that and I'm in my 50's and very out of shape.

Brennan Bernardino (LHP) scheduled for Boston - another opener vs Bassitt. I hate openers, just a silly thing that became popular due to it working for Tampa. After Boston used 6 pitchers today, all with 15+ pitches thus none of them should be used on Sunday but probably will. Hopefully that works in the Jays favor.

Cleveland series starts Monday. Jose Ramirez got in a fistfight with Tim Anderson at 2nd base today. He will be suspended. He will probably appeal. If we're lucky he'll serve whatever he gets vs the Jays. If we're not lucky he will serve it their next series vs Tampa.

I'm curious how the Jays handle the roster when Bo comes back. Schneider clearly is earning his spot right now, if he doesn't slump pre-Bo returning. So do you send down Espinal with DeJong being the backup at SS? I really don't see who else you could send down. Come September I'd want a 3rd catcher like Heineman on the bench for that extra batting slot, far above having Espinal who right now is near useless (showed terrible baserunning today, hasn't hit all year, his fielding even has looked meh all year at best).

Pitching with 1 more slot has TONS of options. Once Romano & Richards are healthy and Green returns 3 guys got to go down - Francis the only easy choice, but Jackson & Cabrera most likely the others. Romano-Hicks-Green-Swanson-Garcia-Mayza-Richards all locks, the 6 man rotation is going strong right now and I doubt they want to release Ryu who seems the weakest, so come September one of Jackson or Cabrera would return with Pearson in AAA as insurance. My bet for the final pen slot once all are healthy is Cabrera as the 2nd lefty has been quite useful even though I'd hate to see Jackson sent back down given how he has been doing. Maybe they will need to release Ryu on August 14th once this stretch of no breaks is done.

Schedule is 8 more games, then 1 day off, then 2 games, day off, 3 games, day off, 9 games, day off, 6 games, day off, 10 games, day off, 6 games, day off, 6 games, playoffs.

Looking at that you can see why they might want to keep Ryu around, just to ensure the rotation stays healthy - he might be used 5 times with that schedule. But if he only goes 3 innings then he isn't too useful and you might as well do Richards starting for 3, then a pen day from that point on that day with Jackson or Pearson called up to cover for whoever is worked hardest and can be demoted (Cabrera really the only other guy who can be).

Hrm... so I see once all healthy the 6 man rotation kept (Ryu skipped when off days allow), Romano-Hicks-Green-Swanson-Garcia-Mayza-Richards as the pen, then Cabrera returns in September with expanded rosters with Jackson and Pearson the odd men out. Assuming Romano-Green-Richards all return pre-September of course. This is a good problem to have - too many good relievers.

FG has Davis Schneider as the 10th most valuable Blue Jays position player this season, worth 0.3 WAR in only 2 games.  He's had quality at bats  and shown the power, patience and hustle that earned him his promotion. He's even shown better than I expected speed.

However looking at his position on the FG list ends up making me sad because of the other player with 0.3 WAR who I guess is percentage points behind him in 11th place - Vladdy.

I don't love batting Schneider third. It reminds me of the manager's decision to bat Varsho fourth at the beginning of the season. It puts too much pressure and expectation on a young (and in this case inexperienced) player.
dalimon5 - Sunday, August 06 2023 @ 10:42 AM EDT (#433676) #
Yeah this is not something I see working out for both Schneiders. Way to much pressure on the kid. Might as well bring up Tiedeman and let him pitch through 6 innings. This probably doesnt go over well with vets like Springer and Chapman internally. Sure you gotta win, but putti g a rookie with 48 hours of experience batting clean up?

I like today's order. It's about keeping guys in their usual roles, and subbing in a new player for a guy getting a day off.

Only the 4th time all season they're going with Merrifield and Biggio in the corners. I wonder if Varsho's day off has anything to do with him being the backup C.

John Schneider makes weird lineup decisions. Along with putting Varsho high in the order, which increased the pressure on him, he also kept sticking a struggling George Springer at leadoff, then moved him down the lineup finally, gave him a day off, then had him bat cleanup even though he was at least 0 for 30 at that point.

If Davis Schneider produces even moderately well for the rest of the season, it makes Santiago Espinal's future with the club increasingly dim, especially after that brain dead baserunning yesterday.

Schneider reminds me of Pillar. Just like Pillar, Schneider was a scrub. The big thing both have, by what I've heard, is work ethic, doing what it takes to be the best they could be despite less than major league skills in some areas. Makeup is the baseball term. Pillar was voted teammate of the year (or whatever it's called) his season in SF. AA brought 34 yr old Pillar to Atlanta and he's still on the roster despite rarely playing.  Anti-Javy Baez's.

Davis Schneider leads Buffalo in OPS. Very close behind him is Ernie Clement (OPS 969 vs 960).

Schneider has played well and leads the Jays in OPS (yes, small sample).

Ernie Clement is second on the Jays in OPS (again, small sample - OPS 1.125).

We can only wonder what Clement would have done if Schneider gave him more at-bats. Schneider and Clement both have 8 at-bats.

I like players like Espinal (premium defenders (and, yes, I know he’s struggling on defense this year)) but what he’s doing on the roster over Clement is beyond me. All managers have “their guys” but the best managers can have their mind’s changed one way or the other. Schneider has yet to show that flexibility.

And, sorry, Varsho is Pillar not Schneider:)

his AAA numbers this year are definitely interesting, especially that insanely low K%, but I get why they're not too eager to play him over the likes of Espinal or Biggio.

My Pillar/Schneider comparison wasn't a comp. It has has nothing to do with their styles of play.  They were low draft picks with low expectations. Varsho .was pick 68 as opposed to Schneider 849 and Pillar 979. They worked their asses off to become what they became despite their non-prospect status. That's the similarity

I think both Francis and Jackson have performance based cases to stay ahead of Pearson when Green or Romano comes back.

I’ve thought for a while now that Davis Schneider could hit at the major league level. Over time, if used as a starter, he’s going to give quite a bit back on the defensive side of things. This is where Schneider the manager needs to show his chops - can he mix a match pieces and situations to put his part time players to their best use. It’s where someone like Kevin Cash shines.

The Jays could use an unexpected magic burst from Davis Schneider. When was the last time they had something like that happen for them? It seems year after year the Yankees get 300 magic ABs from some washed up has been like Matt Carpenter. What was the last magic blast like that for the Jays? Juan Guzman? Tom Filer?

Mix/match Varsho-KK in CF while Merrifield lives in LF for now? DeJong has to stay at SS until Bo returns. Chapman 3B, Vlad/Belt 1B/DH, Kirk C until Jansen healthy. Biggio/Espinal live on the bench unless needed to run for Kirk or Belt late. Still a week+ until Romano/Richards can return. Hatch gone (Pittsburgh), Thornton gone (Seattle - retirement home for Jays with Teoscar, Saucedo, Robbie Ray - on IL all year, 1.8 bWAR total there, boy was it a good idea to sign Gausman instead eh?)

Hover over the Fangraphs search box. Ohtani is 2nd.

John here is what I’d do.

Against lefties: Play Varsho in LF or in CF if KK is sitting. Whit and Schneider can each get a day or so off per week. Until Bo gets back the one not at 2b can DH.

Against righties: Sit Varsho, play Whit in LF. Schneider at 2b.

Biggio can be a PH and occasional backup at 1B or in RF. Don’t play catchers at DH. When Bo gets back DeJong is still going to get plenty of SS as I assume Bo will DH a lot. Espinal can be a pinch hitter and runner and spell Chapman and 2b for two starts per week total.
John Northey - Sunday, August 06 2023 @ 09:49 PM EDT (#433752) #
Espinal pinch hit? Why? He has a 70 OPS+ this year (before his 0-1 with a walk today), as a pinch hitter he is 2 for 12 with 3 walks (167/333/250). His running has been mixed at best (Saturday he ran into a double play) and is at 0.2 BsR this year (same as Horwitz in 3 games and no one thinks of him as a 'wow' baserunner) after a -1.5 last year. I'm guessing when Bo gets back Espinal might find himself with a mystery injury or demoted. Who else would you send down? Choices are Schneider, Biggio, Espinal, or releasing DeJong assuming no one else gets hurt.

Schneider was not on Fangraphs Top 41 Jays prospects list for 2023 (and he wasn't on their "other prospects of note" list either). BA left him off their preseason top 30 prospects, although he quickly rose to #15 on their recent Jays midseason prospects list.

It's really a stunning turn of events, although he has been steadily paying his dues as a professional baseball player since 2017. I wish him continued success in the majors.

But Schneider was on the Batters Box top 30....at number 30.

Dammit. If i hadn't stopped scouting prospect statslines i mighta been able to call a kid with a milb career 124wrc+ with average babip and very good patience and power, while only a year or two old for his level.
John Northey - Sunday, August 06 2023 @ 11:19 PM EDT (#433756) #
I keep a tally of what each site lists for top prospects in the spring but never got BP's for this year, so I never presented it here sadly. Davis Schneider was listed on 4 that I have - #22 by Blue Jays Nation, #30 here, #33 by TSN, and #33 by Prospects 1500. Tip of the cap to all 4 of them. The big guns (BA/FG/MLB Pipeline/Keith Law) didn't have him on their list even under 'honourable mentions'.
soupman - Sunday, August 06 2023 @ 11:28 PM EDT (#433757) #
Did Law ever have an mlb job other than here?

I remember he was convinced the Angels were making a huge mistake “entertaining” Ohtani’s desire to be a two way player. I accidentally read his draft coverage this year before realizing my mistake.

I wonder how many others were thinking 'Junior Felix' this weekend watching Schneider. Back in 1989 Felix came up and played OK for 24 games (225/300/394) after Jesse Barfield was traded, but then the Jays went to Fenway and he became a legend in a 3 game sweep. 8 for 16 with 2 home runs including an inside the park grand slam and the game winner in extra innings on the Sunday to cap off a game the Jays were losing 10-0 after 6 (no lead was safe at Fenway pre-Alex Cora and his early white flag today).
John Northey - Sunday, August 06 2023 @ 11:40 PM EDT (#433759) #
Found the inside the park HR, Ernie Whitt hitting another one to put the Jays in the lead on the Sunday. Sadly coudln't find video of Felix' game winner.

Junior felix was of course in his 30s in his "21yr old rookie" year.

"For anyone who didn't hear Dan, Schneider with 9 hits in his first 3 games tied the record that was set in 1938"

That record was set by Coaker Triplett to start 1938. After those three games he went 0-22 with 0 walks, playing his last game of the season on May 12th.

From what I can tell, however, he did not have a moustache.

Davis wears glasses. Coaker should have gotten glasses.

As for all those websites who didn't see what a good prospect Schneider was, the Jays left him unprotected in the rule 5 this past offseason.  None of the other 29 teams thought he was good enough to draft.
Michael - Monday, August 07 2023 @ 01:57 AM EDT (#433764) #
Great to see the Schneider debut. While he's a minor league fringe prospect according to mlb pipeline, it is worth noting that Schneider is 7 weeks older than Vlad.

So people noting that Schneider now has more fWAR than Vlad this year, are noting how Vlad is struggling, but pretty crazy that Vlad's still younger than some prospects despite the 600+ major league games across pandemic shortened seasons.

If Green was ready, I think they would have used Francis for 2 and sent him down.

My opinion of the manager's tactical skills has dropped to the point that I assumed he simply made a bad choice in not sending Francis back out for the ninth. But then I remembered that Jackson hadn't pitched in a week becase of his family leave, so I can buy the logic of getting him some game action to keep him sharp.

Green pitched Saturday in Buffalo and has had no apparent hiccups in any of his rehab outings. I expect he'll join the team in Cleveland and that Francis will be the odd man out. (Pearson's safe, Nigel - he's already in Buffalo).

Happy the Jays didn't acquire Tim Anderson.
92-93 - Monday, August 07 2023 @ 09:58 AM EDT (#433769) #
Originally it was reported that the Jays want Green to pitch on back to back days in Buffalo before bringing him up, so if they stick to that plan he'll likely pitch Tuesday/Wednesday in AAA and then get called up this weekend.

Francis can only be optioned down one more time this season before exposing him to waivers.
Nigel - Monday, August 07 2023 @ 10:10 AM EDT (#433770) #
Oh I expect Pearson to stay ahead of Francis and Jackson, that’s why I said performance based cases. The lure of top prospect status will keep Pearson in town a long time, deserving or not (and he hasn’t been terrible - just mediocre).

Arizona was the feel good story in the 1st half of the season. They won July 1st and their 50-34 record had them 3 games up in the NL west.

Then a complete collapse. 7-22 since, the worst in the majors. Their hitting, 105 wRC+ on July 1, is 83 wRC+, 26th place since. Pitching even a bigger issue - MLB worst 5.62 ERA the past 29 games..

I can't decide if Davis Schneider is Ned Flanders as a young man or a long lost member of Devo -- but he doesn't look like any ballplayer I remember. That swing tho ...

The MLB Pipeline rankings are always the least accurate because they're not updated very often and, in the case of the Jays, it's done by Keegan Matheson - the Jays MLB.com beat writer. If you read writeups for any of the clubs, they often speak to a previous season and aren't current.

When Robberse was traded, they just added Luis Meza back on because there was already a profile written for him (he'd fallen off a while ago and is not top 30 worthy).
hypobole - Monday, August 07 2023 @ 11:07 AM EDT (#433775) #
Did notice something while checking the Arizona collapse.  Since July 1, 2 teams have the best ERA' in the majors at 3.40. That would be Toronto and Baltimore.
ISLAND BOY - Monday, August 07 2023 @ 11:21 AM EDT (#433777) #
Some random stuff:

Yesterday's game was the first since September 22, 2019 that neither Vlad or Bo were in the lineup.

Davis Schneider has 9 hits in 3 games. Bradley Zimmer had 14 in 101 plate appearances last year.( Why did he get that many?)

Carlos Rodon now has an ERA of 7.33. Fortunately for him but not the Yankees, he has a 6 year guaranteed contract for $162 million.

Major league parks have to have padded walls to protect the players when they run into them so why the heck are the Red Sox allowed to have a metal grate section of the wall. Kevin Kiermaier had to get stitches in his elbow after hitting it yesterday.

One other note on rankings. Longo tries to be as comprehensive as possible, but that means some rankings are fairly current and some only pre-season. The Jays were posted mid March, the Rangers less than a month ago, so about 4 months apart.
John Northey - Monday, August 07 2023 @ 01:48 PM EDT (#433780) #
Looking at BR for '2nd half' (basically since ASG), we get the Jays at 7th for sOPS+ at 116, 3rd in the AL (Texas & Minnesota ahead). Houston 9th, Boston 11th, Seattle 12th, Baltimore 14th, Tampa 19th, Yankees 21st (Judge has a 685 OPS in the 2nd half). For ERA after last night the Jays are #1 in the majors at 3.60, O's #2 at 3.61. TBR #10, Houston #11, Yankees #19, Boston #20. Jays are 2nd in starters ERA at 3.28 (Cleveland 2.94 is #1), #12 in pen ERA at 4.08 (Hicks 5.40, Swanson 5.87, Hatch 7.71, Pearson 12.27, White 18.00 is why).

Starters 2nd half - Kikuchi 1.23 ERA, Bassitt 2.70, Berrios 2.89, Gausman 4.41, Manoah 5.12, Ryu 7.20. Who'd have thought Kikuchi would be the ace so far in the 2nd half? Go figure. The 3 guys who have been the last 3 Jay aces though have had troubles.
