NOTES

It was a bullpen day for the Bisons. Zach Pop had a few good outings recently bit not on Thursday. He was charged with three runs on six hits. Nate Pearson came on to bail him out in his first appearance since he was demoted. He got five outs but walked three.

Just three hits for the Bisons. Orelvis was 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout.

In NH I noted last week that Chad Dallas gives up zero or one run, or five or six. No in betweens. Yesterday he gave up five in the first three innings. He hung in to go five innings. Juan Nunez threw two shutout innings in relief. The hard thrower has an interesting line. In 21.1 innings in AA the 27 year old has only given up nine hits. He has struck out 34! Hitters are hitting .129 off him. But there is a catch, 22 walks in 21.1 innings.

The Fisher Cats had to come back from a 5-1 deficit. Phil Clarke did his part, hitting two solo home runs. Damiano Palmegiani also had two hits and drove in two runs.

Josh Kasevich hit his third home run, and second in a week, a three run shot. He ended the game at 2-3 with four RBI. Devonte Brown had two doubles. New guy Jeffrey Wehler was 2-3 with a double and a walk.

Devereaux Harrison went six innings for the win. Everett scored three run off him with six hits.

Dunedin gave up the tying run in the eighth and the losing run in the ninth. Lazaro Estrada is being stretched out as a starter. He went four innings giving up one run.

The Jays had eight hits. Tucker Toman was the only Jay with two and the only Jay with an extra base hit, a double. Bryce Arnold had his first pro hit.

As mentioned in yesterdays chat, Aneudi Escanio is leading the DSL Jays in hitting, and is top ten in the DSL in OPS among those who have played at least ten games. Escanio is ninth in the team in at-bats with less than half the at-bats of the major prospects. He has had a couple of gaps of a week between appearances so perhaps he has had some injury issues.

Kasevich now 296/371/372 with 25BB/29 K

He is 22. Assuming he develops some more extra base pop, which is common as players mature, he is looking good.

Any idea if he will be able to stick at SS? So far he seems to have avoided most of the utility player drill the Jays like to do.

7 and half series left for the minor leagues except AAA. So the SPs will have 7/8 more starts. So about 32 innings.

I don't see much possible SP promotions. Maybe D Harrison to NH. Kloffenstein could go to AAA. I probably have forgotten someone.

Jays seem really good at developing catchers for some reason. Does anyone know what Clarke is like defensively? Love his eye and his OBP so if he is a good defender, seems like another great backup C/3rd catcher type. System still isn't strongest but looks way better than it did a couple of months ago. Hopefully, Nimmala will get assigned soon as well to give us someone else to track.

I’d venture the following on Kasevich. I think his athleticism and defense are better than advertised. I think he can be an above average defender at SS. His strike zone control is also strong. But I really don’t see it more broadly on offense. I don’t have exit velocities but I’ve see him live for probably 30-40 PAs and I’ve yet to see a single example of “loud contact”. I’m a fan because I love players with his skills but I’m not overly impressed tbh. Maybe it’s a temporary transition to wood bats issue, we’ll see.

I'm sure there's been chatter about Schneider but i've been only skimming the prospects threads.

But in addition to having a fantastic line this year and previous years, he sure seems to be a perfect fit for the big club as a RHH LF/2B.

Kinda seems like a Whit clone.

heh - yep, i missed the chatter the last few prospects threads. I agree with Nigel and others that he is the ideal 26th man at the moment.

In my looks, Clarke is kind of fine at everything but doesn't really standout; low energy guy. He also doesn't show the same leadership on the field as some of the other catchers. Andres Sosa is the best all around for my money and I see definite second-string potential. I also like Jommer Hernandez on defense as a future No. 3/4 catcher that can't hit but plays some games while filling in for injuries if he sticks around enough.

The worst I've seen, by far, was Victor Mesia late last year. He's probably only still playing because he got a decent signing bonus.

Nigel, I watched the 2 HR from Kasevich. late last night. One was a belt high inner half pitch, the other down and in. He turned on the first one,  golfed the second one, Both ended up in the short porch LF bullpen.  I think they said the first was 343?? with a 98 EV.  Merrifield power is going to be as good as it gets IMO.  On D he wasn't really tested, but his throws were accurate.
Don't have time to watch a lot, so if if anyone watches a game that shows off Kasevich D with some degree of difficulty, would appreciated it being passed along.

I’ll see if I can find something on Kasevich but there was a game in May when he was actually playing 3B and he put on a display defensively. Two balls he had to charge (bunt and a chopper) and one hard hit ball down the line that he made great plays on. His arm strength combined with accuracy is pretty impressive. Generally though, he’s not flashy but just makes all the plays.

Agree with Marc on Clarke. There’s a bit of everything there but it’s at a lower level than say Sosa. Not impossible that that could turn into something but it’s a long shot.

hypobole, interesting on the HRs. The one I saw from a few weeks ago was a golf shot too. I suppose any HR is hit hard but the one I saw really didn’t feel that way. He’s not tiny, so a Merrifield type power upside is probably spot on.

Jace Bohrofen made his debut today. He was hit by a pitch in his second at-bat and was pinch hit for when his turn came around again. Hopefully it is just precautionary.

Braden Barry, another recent draftee, was the pinch hitter.

I concur on Davis Schneider - pity he's not been given a shot so far - hope he's still in the organization after the trade deadline.

24 yr old Schneider  - 18.5% BB, 22.6% K, 136wRC+

I found 2 24 yr old at the time somewhat similar comps from 2021 in AAA

Kevin Smith - 11.2% BB, 23.7% K,  144 wRC+
Jarren Duran - 10.6% BB, 23.3% K, 132 wRC+

Both had the advantage over Schneider by being plus defenders.  On the hitting side Smith has regressed massively after that terrific season, whereas Duran has the same 132 wRC+ mark in the majors as he did 2 yrs ago in the minors.

Kasevich recorded a 99th percentile Max EV of 113 MPH in his final season at Oregon. At least in college, he let the ball travel really far into the zone, which in combination with his extreme swing path made it impossible to hit for power.

He'll be interesting to follow because the underlying bat speed is there to hit for much more power (at least it was a year ago). That Max EV is significantly higher than Merrifield's (Max EV of 104.6 this season for example). But of course, making swing adjustments is easier said than done.

A blast from the past. Welcome back, metafour.
mathesond - Friday, July 28 2023 @ 05:57 PM EDT (#432778) #
I assume that 113 MPH EV was off an aluminum bat. Are aluminum EVs comparable to wooden, or should that be discounted some in order to equivalize?

Ricky Tiedemann was scheduled to pitch for Dunedin tonight but the game was rained out.
