Taylor Blake Ward @TaylorBlakeWard 13-394. Blue Jays: Brennan Orf, OF, Southern Illinois -- physical college corner w/ offensive upside, loose LH cut w/ strength behind ball and bat spd to tap into abv-avg pwr, highly disciplined approach w/ zone recognition, strong arm w/ athleticism for corner OF and 1B fallback

Matt Collier @reillocity Brennan Orf, 13-393 TOR AVG & ISO Ratings on Batted Balls didn't change too much vs '22 but underlying batted ball profile fundamentals improved to make sustaining production in pros more likely. Among best-eyed D1 LHB lost some K Avoid vs Oppo P. LF-able now, too.

I think Orf is the 3rd college OF drafted so far. Hopefully that's enough to move Roden up to AA. Zac Cook, Espino or both would be easy dumps if it were up to me.

Cook was actually just released. He had been on the development list and wasn't active with the club.

Orf is mildly intriguing to me. meh on the rest today.

It is hard to get excited about today. KK round 31 in 2010. Danny Jansen round 16 2013. Russel Martin round 17 2002. K Pillar round 32 2011. Add these names to Graveman and C Mike P in LAD.

Thanks, Marc.

Day 3 is picks 11-20...and that is it for the draft now. Lets see what the Jays did in the past...
  • 11: Best ever was Willie Blair 2.6 WAR. Ugh. Just 11 of 45 ever reached, just 2 others with positive WAR. Biggest bonus was to Jake Brentz in 2013 at $700k
  • 12: Top 2 in WAR didn't sign (Doug Mientkiewicz & Tanner Houck), then comes Tim Mayza (3.3 from 2013), and Vinnie Chulk (1.3). Plus Nick Allgeyer & Jonathan Diaz and that's it.
  • 13: Again, best by a mile didn't sign (Ted Lilly), but Alex Gonzalez at 11.2 was a damn good find. 4 others made it too (Ryan Thompson at 3.5 the only over 1 guy)
  • 14: Brandon Lyon (6.3) and Jay Gibbons (5.5) were nice picks. 1 DNS also made it, and Carlos Diaz at 0.
  • 15: Ryan Noda is the best who signed (1.6 and growing for Oakland), Ryan Borucki, Drew Hutchison, Jonathan Davis, and near HOF'er Danny Ainge (OK NBA) drafted here too.
  • 16: Danny Jansen the best by a mile at 7.2, drops to Dalton Pompey at 0.5 then with 7 of 45 making it.
  • 17: Reed Johnson at 10.6 is a wow, 2 DNS over 0, and 2 did signs sub 0.
  • 18: Best here DNS sigh... (Kris Bryant 28.6 WAR), but Jon Berti (6.7) did, as did Ryan Roberts (5.8). 3 more reached.
  • 19: Bullpen round - Ryan Tepera (4.5), Bob File (1.4), Bob MacDonald (1.2) all made it, as did one DNS.
  • 20: 1989 the Jays did a 'WOW' in drafting Jeff Kent here (55.5), kind of blows the rest out of the water in Mark Hendrickson (4.2), Ben Weber (3.0), and Vinny Capra (0.1)
So few of the guys drafted today will make it. But it is time for some big swings imo - there could be a Jeff Kent, Ted Lilly, or Kris Bryant out there.
John Northey - Tuesday, July 11 2023 @ 04:36 PM EDT (#431574) #
Round 7 was the last round the Jays drafted anyone who is ranked in the top 250. Still 10 of the top 100 on the board, but I'm guessing all have big contract demands. I'd be calling each to see if they'd consider signing for $125k (I think that is the limit before using up cap space) with assorted promises of course. Tanner Witt is 3 years into a 4 year program (RHP) so I'm a bit surprised he isn't taken as those guys tend to be signable. Cam Clayton at #150 is the next highest who isn't just finishing high school (2nd year college).

I figure teams are calling these guys to see if any are interested in starting a pro career, despite not being able to get a 7 figure bonus. A year of development time can be worth a lot more if you make it. I doubt any will sign but given how rare draft picks this late make it I'd give it a shot if I was the Jays.
John Northey - Tuesday, July 11 2023 @ 04:38 PM EDT (#431575) #
Heh. Just as I was typing that Tanner Witt was drafted by the O's. Can't blame them one bit for rolling the dice. Lose the pick and it won't hurt but sign him and you could be laughing.
bpoz - Tuesday, July 11 2023 @ 04:51 PM EDT (#431577) #
Tanner Witt was a favorite of mine. I would not have minded 1st round. Too bad we did not have a 2nd round pick worth $1.5mil or so.
bpoz - Tuesday, July 11 2023 @ 05:04 PM EDT (#431578) #
We will add NDFA's later. For example Al Pesto signed June 3, 2023. FCL then promoted to NH. He is pitching ok, but no bb yet. He throws hard I believe. 27 years old in August.

Instant Draft Analysis - Brunson and Munson rhyme.

Interesting article about 17th-round pick Sam Kulasingam and the unlikelihood he will sign with Toronto.

The Jays selected Canadian hurler Jeremy Pilon in the 18th round in 2022. Tampa just picked him in the 18th round this year.

Aaron Judge and Thurman Munson equals Aaron Munson.  Strange that the Yankees didn't sign him.

Here is a story on Sam Shaw who grew up a Blue Jays fan. There is no word on if he will sign or go to Xavier University instead.
