Daily minor league updates have been a feature on Batters Box since 2004. A lot has changed in the baseball world over the last twenty years and now the daily MLU is changing too.

First, the internet has made minor league games more available to those who follow prospect performance. It started with real time box scores. Then we had a basic gameday. Thereafter gameday was continuously enhanced. Statcast arrived with even more information. And finally Milb TV made watching games easy for those interested.

Secondly, sources of information on the minor leagues and individual prospects are now more readily available. Twitter can give you real time reports on players and teams. Teams regularly post video on Twitter of notable events during games. The players themselves can interact with fans on Instagram or Twitter or Tik Tok.

What these changes mean is that the minor league update is often old news. Significant events are often detailed in the Batters Box minor league thread as they happen. People are on Twitter or are following the games themselves. As a result recapping the games the next day is not as relevant as it was in 2004.

And finally, how people access information has changed. Back in 2004 blogs were the new kids on the block, and they were a key source of finding out news and discussing what was going on. Blogs are still around and while Batters Box was, I believe, the first Blue Jay blog, there are now many blogs. While Batters Box is all volunteer with no advertising, other blogs have employees and take advertising to help pay the bills. Those blogs have more time and resources to grow their audience. Audience growth has not been a focus for Batters Box and we have been happy to retain our core group of dedicated fans. There are also locals in some of the cities providing information on that team. Our own Niall O'Donohoe does that very well for the Vancouver Canadians.

These changes in the environment are also reflected in our numbers. In general Batters Box has fewer visitors now than we had in the 2010's. The minor league update viewing numbers have also dropped, they are approx. 35% of what they were in the 2010's.

For all these reasons we are changing the minor league updates. We are no longer going to describe what happened in each game. As mentioned above we believe that is old news for a lot of people and has limited interest among readers. That information is often in the threads anyway, as posters discuss what they have seen on video or noted while following a game. In addition, on some days you can get a lot of lower scoring games where there is really nothing notable that happened.

Instead of a play by play MLU, we are moving to a MLU that just discusses a few things we noted specifically that day. It could be a big performance or a bad one. Or a more general note of what is happening in the Jays minor league system.

We hope you enjoy the new format and continue to discuss the minor leagues in the comments.

Looking forward to the new format, even though I’m one of those old fashioned guys who always read these first!

Thank you to Gerry and Niall for all you do.

I'm happy we are going to keep getting these updates in any form. As one of the many who write here I know what a pain it is somedays to think of something to write.

FYI: Nathan Lukes makes the team. Bit of a surprise as I thought Lopez had it locked up but great for Lukes as entering his age 28 season he really needed to break in now. Lopez is in his age 24 season on his final option so he has time.

I echo the thanks to John and Niall and anybody else like Magpie who contributes to Battersbox. I like hearing from anybody who sees any minor league games in person. Is there any good sites in particular to follow the results of minor league games?

Man, I called it on Lukes, but I'm glad I was right.  This feels like a do right by the player moment.  There is literally no competitive advantage to keeping Lopez, who won't play over the backups in this healthy lineup, vs. Lukes, who might get a few innings in CF, appears comparable as a PR, and who the org has control over during his peak years.

Not like the rest of the team won't be stoked for him, either.  good move.
Lopez will get his chance, and the org knows he's earned it.

Also, Jay Jackson is resigning, more good news, and another testament to the idea that minor league vets like Jackson, Lukes, Bernard, Brantley etc see value in signing with Buffalo.

Lukes makes a lot of sense on a roster that has emphasized improved outfield defense. I do expect we'll have an ongoing debate this season about the lack of an RH bench bat, but that's a piece that can probably be added during the season as the opportunity arises.

I log into batter's Box. Then the sites for Buffalo, NH, Vancouver and Dunedin which are saved on my computer. I get the Box score there. If there is an article on the game I get more info. Then back to Da Box for discussion. It works well for me.

A big thumbs up to the new MLU format - I usually check the MILB scores so I have an idea of the counting stats. - injury updates would be welcome though I suspect organizations may be reluctant to share such information - And as others have mentioned, a big thank you to Gerry and the gang for such tireless volunteer work - I appreciate the effort.

No new surprises on the Buffalo roster. Cameron Eden would be the one surprise.

And thankfully Orelvis is not on there so can go back to New Hampshire and work on his game.

A fun way to track players is The Baseball Cube which has a player tracker feature (I think you need to subscribe to get it, but that was fairly cheap and I like a lot of the subscriber features myself). I'm sure similar features exist on other sites.

Not sure how much playing Lukes will get.
The defensive replacement strategy is out of the window now.
Merrifield is probably the right bat in the outfield.
Biggio can also play there, but he's just another left bat with replacement level defense.

Varsho might hit lefties or he might not.
Either way, I think he's topped at 130 games so far.
Springer hasn't been able to stay on the field.
Kiermaier should be seen as a platoon bat and he should get a fair bit of time off, especially on turf.

I sure hope Lukes doesn't get much PT Scottt.  ideally, the 26th guy is more of a specialty skill-set kind of role, break glass in case of emergency, rather than someone who needs regular PT.

Lopez himself on has 10 career ABs.

One surprising omission from the Buffalo roster is Adrian Hernandez.

Maybe just an oversight or maybe he's back down to New Hampshire to begin 2023.

Deal in place between minor league players and MLB. Still has to be ratified by all players and owners. Deal for 5 years and pay at all levels at least 2x.

Hernandez was still in spring training after Buffalo left Florida so I'm guessing he's off to New Hampshire or staying behind to work in the pitching lab.

Checking the Buffalo roster, only A Barger excites me of the position players because he has that immense power.

There are many pitchers that have something to offer. Veterans like Hutch, Hatch, Z Thompson, T Thornton, Peacock, J Jackson and others are projects of some kind. Hope some come through. The young/inexperienced like Zulueta, Juenger and Pearson I have hopes that they can contribute to the Jays this year.
