Dunedin were leading 5-2 in the eighth inning and were six outs away from reaching the final of the FSL playoffs. But Ryan Jennings and Ian Churchill combined to concede five and the Jays were down 7-5 with three outs remaining. 7-5 was the final score setting up the winner take all game tomorrow night. Elsewhere Buffalo won while New Hampshire lost. Vancouver get their playoffs going again on Friday and they have to win to stay alive.

Buffalo 12 Syracuse 7

Harrisburg 11 New Hampshire 0

Dunedin 5 Fort Myers 7

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

The Buffalo game was a wild one. Trailing 5-1 in the sixth Buffalo scored five to go ahead 6-5. Syracuse tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Buffalo went ahead 7-6 in the seventh, Syracuse tied it in the bottom of the seventh. Buffalo, said enough of this and scored five in the eighth.

The Bisons used seven pitchers to get the win. Interestingly, four of them have ERA's over five and three of those are over six.

Nathan Lukes had the only home run, a solo shot. He walked twice and scored three runs. LJ Talley went 2-5 and drove in four runs. John Aiello picked up his first two AAA hits. Rafael Lantigua had three hits.

New Hampshire were shelled. Luis Quinones had a typical start, in 4.2 innings he only allowed one hit and struck out seven. But he walked five and gave up three runs, two earned. The Harrisburg hits, and NH errors continued. Harrisburg had 12 hits and NH made three errors.

New Hampshire had four hits, all singles. Addison Barger had two of them.

As mentioned up top, the eighth inning was a rough one for the Jays. Ryan Jennings, the Jays fourth round pick, walked the lead off hitter and then allowed a single. He did get the next two outs but then manager Donnie Murphy elected to get the lefty in to replace the right handed Jennings. Ian Churchill, tenth round pick, went single, walk, grand slam and the game was gone. That ruined an excellent pitching appearance by Geison Urbaez who threw five scoreless innings.

Offensively, Peyton Williams drove in three with a triple and a sac fly. Estiven Machado had two hits.

Three Stars

Third Star - Geison Urbaez

Second Star - Nathan Lukes

First Star - LJ Talley

Very happy for Groshans promotion to the Marlins and getting his 1st ML homerun. He is off to a great start.

G Urbaez is interesting. Too bad we cannot get scouting reports. His 2021 season was quite terrible and he still starts 2022 in NH as maybe a 1 inning or bulk reliever and gets sent to Dunedin to get stretched out I suppose. So a possible starter or bulk innings guy. Signed Oct 14,2000 as a 20 year old so 4 seasons of minor league ball before rule 5 protection necessary. The important thing is that he has had a good 2022.

The AFL attendees have been announced.

Blue Jay hitters are Addison Barger, Tanner Morris and Zach Britton. Morris has missed time with injury so he needs the reps.

Pitchers are Hagen Danner, who has missed most of 2022, Hunter Gregory, who hasn't pitched since mid June, and Andres Tolhurst, who came back from the IL at the end of July.

The AFL has become a pitcher rehab league in recent years.

It's good that they're giving Barger and Morris time in the AFL.  The position player situation next year should be solid and hopefully a little better balanced L/R, if one of them takes a step forward.

Britton is a catcher/outfielder and his bat has started to come through this year.
He's rule 5 eligible next year.

Barger and Morris are rule 5 eligible this year. Being exposed to the AFL will potentially raise they're profile.
They will have to be added to the 40 this winter.

Danner is already on the 40. He was hurt this year and only pitched 3.2 innings.
Could have been an outright candidate but maybe not.

Tolhurst is a reliever with a high K rate. Control is a question and he needs innings too.
Tolhurst is rule 5 eligible but Gregory won't be for another 2 years.

In general, latino players will usually play in the Winter Leagues--after the rule 5 draft--rather than in the AFL.

I counted 9 players on the 40 man roster that can be dropped without bothering me. 6 pitchers but Thornton is not one of the 6. The other 3 would be JBJ, Zimmer and Capra.

Don't know what Atkins will do.

What's your take on Leo Jimenez, bpoz? The Jays added him to the 40 man roster last year and obviously saw something they liked in him. He hasn't had the greatest of seasons this year although injuries are a part of it. Do the Jays keep him on the 40 man this winter? There doesn't seem like a team would claim him in the Rule 5 draft.

I am guessing that Leo stays because he seems a great defensive SS. The Jays probably hope for his bat to improve so that he can do more in the majors for them. O Lopez is the player with 1 more option and they don't seem to give him a chance at all.

I have decided that O Martinez & A Barger and maybe G Martinez will be added to the 40 man roster. The pitcher would be Zulueta added. I see him as a possible starter except his IP to date is too low for him to have 100+ IP next year. There are only so many 40 man spots available for development players. I probably have forgotten a few prospects.

We probably get a Jonathan Davis defensive replacement to protect leads & pinch run.

Tiedemann will not be added this off season but if he is very good in ST and/or the 1st month of the minor league season he is added because the ML team takes priority.
