Since being sent down:

Moreno: 99pa, 11.1b%/14.1k%, .371babip/.318avg, .129sio, 137wrc+

Still too much babip and not enough power but he's getting there.

He's been around a while but at 23 Otto Lopez is perfectly age appropriate for AAA and is putting up a line which gives every indication he has a chance to hit in the bigs, too.

I would expect the Jays to move Danny Jansen in the offseason, allowing Moreno to split catching duties with Kirk. What they can get for Jansen? Who knows but I would think you could get a decent bullpen arm.

Otto Lopez I’ve liked for a while now. Ultimately, I think his bat can play. He might have more value to the Jays in an offseason trade. Love the bat and the kid is a nice guy. Enjoyed watching him in Vancouver when he was here in short-season ball.

A couple of prospects looking really good recently.

Gabriel Martinez-Rocketing up prospect rankings. He's 20 and so far has a 178 WRC+ in A+. It will go down due to high BABIP but he can hit, doesn't strike out much, and can take a walk.
Cade Doughty-Been easily the best of the Jays 2022 picks so far. 6 HRs in 17 games is incredible in a league where HRs are hard to come by. (198 WRC+)

hurts to see this.

Since trade:

Groshans: 88pa, 12.5b%/13.6k%, .381bip/.342avg, .145iso, 145wrc+

Still a tad young for his level, too.
85bluejay - Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 01:04 PM EDT (#421028) #
I'm happy for Groshans as the Jays were not having much success in developing him - the same might apply to his friend kloffenstein whom the Jays have failed to develop - Maybe the Jays need to re-evaluate their development team.

Very happy for Groshans. He should be in the majors next year. But we got 2 good relievers.
Shoeless Joe - Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 01:57 PM EDT (#421032) #
I still think our PTBNL might be a decent prospect in the Groshans trade.

Will have to see sustained power from Groshans to see him as a major leaguer. He's having a good stretch but it's pretty small sample size and still only 2 HRs. Maybe he gets there but 3 HRs in 360+ PAs in AAA is weak. Maybe he's turned a corner though. Curious to see which prospect Jays get back as PTBNL.
John Northey - Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 03:04 PM EDT (#421034) #
Should be interesting to see how assorted prospects do - the Jays development team did OK with Kirk, Vlad, Bo, Biggio, Espinal, Gurriel Jr, Jansen though so hard to blast them over Groshans. Plus Austin Martin still sucks in AA for Minnesota (236/366/298 plus 2 games in rookie ball going 2-8 with 2 walks) - since coming back from injury (I assume) he has hit in AA 167/300/214 - at this pace he might not see AAA until 2024 if ever, let alone the majors.

selling on Martin was always the right move.

there's never been any indication of hope in his numbers.
Cracka - Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 04:54 PM EDT (#421044) #
Martin has been hit by pitches twice since he came back and is now up to 18 on the season and 42 in his professional career. This season his HBP rate is ~6.5% -- and as far as I can tell that's only happened once before: Ron Hunt in 1971 when he was hit 50(!) times in 638 PA. It's a nice way of padding your OBP but certainly doesn't seem sustainable and Martin, like peak Ron Hunt, has virtually no power at all. He seems like a long shot at this point...

Groshans problem was injuries. He could never get it going. Yet he still advanced to AAA very well. The talent is probably there because it has been consistent but so has the injury history. He is young enough for AAA.

"This season his HBP rate is ~6.5% -- and as far as I can tell that's only happened once before"

Tim Locastro. Lansing 2014. 310 PA. 32 HBP.

Groshan's BABIP after the trade is .380. Lets see what a greater number of games reveals.
uglyone - Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 08:10 PM EDT (#421071) #
the babip is high but the average is tucked right up next to it so it's not such a bad deal. meanwhile his bb/k rates are great while his medium pop has finally returned after a mysterious half season absence.

Edward Duran is the PTBNL.
PeterG - Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 11:36 PM EDT (#421095) #
Duran is an 18 year old catcher in the DSL.
John Northey - Thursday, September 01 2022 @ 12:55 AM EDT (#421097) #
Duran looks like a non-prospect to me. 254/358/340 over 229 PA in the Dominican Summer League (over 2 seasons) is not impressive at all. He has thrown out 22% of baserunners over 43 games catching, again not impressive. Maybe the Jays see something there, but I sure don't. He is 18 this year and already is playing a bit at 1B. Ah well. Don't expect much from the PTBNL in any deal.
