Yosver Zulueta was impressive in his latest rehab start. He should be ready for a higher assignment soon. Luis Quinones made his first rehab start and he should be headed to AA in a few weeks. Recently signed former major leaguer Brady Lail threw five innings for New Hampshire. Offensively LJ Talley, who has been hitting well for New Hampshire, has been sent down to New Hampshire. As a result Steward Berroa has been moved from NH to Vancouver and Hugo Cardona from Vancouver to Dunedin. Once Cavan Biggio and Danny Jansen return other players could be pushed down through the system to additionally add more depth at each level.

On the field New Hampshire and Dunedin had nice wins while Buffalo and Vancouver lost.

Buffalo 2 Lehigh Valley 6

Binghamton 2 New Hampshire 7

Vancouver 2 Eugene 9 - continuation of suspended game

Vancouver at Eugene - regularly scheduled game, postponed

Tampa 3 Dunedin 7

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Natahn Lukes reached base his first three times up. When he struck out in the seventh after an eleven pitch at bat he was ejected as was his manager. Runs were hard to come by, the Bisons had just seven hits. Jordan Groshans and Gabriel Moreno each went 0-4 with Moreno striking out three times.

Nick Allgeyer was the starter and was charged with five runs although two were unearned after Jordan Groshans made his fourth error of the season.

Five home runs for the Fisher Cats. Sebastian Espino had two to give him six on the season. Orelvis hit his ninth, a long one to left. Tanner Morris added his fifth and John Aiello his third. NH had just three other hits, Orelvis and Espino added singles and Spencer Horwitz a double.

Andrew Bash, down from AAA, started and went four innings. New signee Brady Lail, with his 21 innings of MLB experience, was recently signed and he threw the other five innings. Each of them had six K's.

Due to more rain Vancouver completed the suspended game from Monday, but were unable to play the regularly scheduled game. Mondays game was suspended with the C's down 5-1, it ended 9-2. Leo Jimenez had homered on Monday for the first run, he added a single. PK Morris also had two hits. Mac Mueller tripled for the other run.

Yosver Zulueta made his third rehab start for Dunedin and went 4.2 innings or 73 pitches. Ten of his 14 outs were via strikeout. He allowed five hits and no walks. Another rehabber made his first appearance of the season. Luis Quinones who ended 2021 in AA threw 50 pitches and .2 innings. Seven of his eight outs were punch outs.

Rainer Nunez went 2-4 with four RBI and his ninth home run. Francisco Fajardo also homered while six other starters had one hit each.

Orelvis

April: 67 PA, 1 BB, 24 K
May: 37 PA, 3 BB, 8 K

138 wRC+ as one of only 4 20 yr olds in AA is impressive despite the poor, but hopefully improving, plate discipline thus far.

Orelvis has had 34 PAs in May with 3 homers, 3 walks and 8 Ks.  That will play.  Hopefully he can sustain the improvement from his poor April performance.

Tanner Morris scores runs and O Martinez gets RBIs. Morris has 5 Hr. NH park seems to benefit the power of either LH or RH batters. I don't know which. But Orelvis can probably hit HRs in any park.

All 4 of Groshans' errors have been throwing and all in 10 games.

Charged a slow roller to 3rd, threw well wide of 1st.
Was the cutoff man in short left and sailed a throw way over the catcher.
Came in from short on a ground ball and while on the move bounced a throw to 1st.
Last night, a ball hit right at him at 3rd. Set his feet and threw 5 ft high over the 1st baseman.

He's lost a lot of injury time. Seems his bat has been much less affected than all the fielding reps he's missed.

I thought it was 37 PA's in May for Orelvis.

You're right, hypobole.  Either way, those are excellent numbers in May.

Tanner Morris'  home run yesterday wasn't a cheap shot according to Gameday.  He's hit 3 homers in 46 PAs at home and 2 homers in 41 PAs on the road.  So far, he's had 36 PAs leading off an inning and he's .333/.500/.639 in that situation.  He is 24 years old, but he bats left and there is an opening for a player of his type.

Quinones was in my top 10 because he had a great season last year and reduced the walks as the year progressed. Does not give up many hits, the HRs is ok and a lot of Ks. Glad to see that he is back.

Tanner Morris has some weird stats early on.

Hitting 287/431/483 w 5 HR in 26 games. Yet he has only 7 RBI and zero doubles. How do you hit 5 HR and a triple but no doubles? Weird.

He has more walks than K's with 21 v 18. In small sample size he is hitting LH better than RH. OPS of 858 v 1.299.

I know there is concern regarding his lack or defence but he has played 2B and 3B with some SS last season. He only has 2 errors so far this season.

Hopefully his D is at an acceptable level, as it looks like his bat will play.

Part randomness I imagine, but also a change of approach. LD% down from 25.6% to 17.6%. FB% up from 27.5% to 38.2%. Mike's gameday post was correct. He got a hanging curve and absolutely crushed it.

Apparently search is disabled? There's no way to get annual prosect lists anymore.

Anyway, just looking at AA and both Cook and Espino have the worst strikeout rates I've ever seen:
50% for Espino (41/82PA)
~45% for Cook (41/93 PA).
I hope this is related to stuff they are specifically working on, or they improve, because that's not workable.

I take full responsibility on Cook. A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone had some first hand viewing of Cook as I knew nothing about him but that "all he's done is hit" since he was drafted. Since that date, all he's done is K. My bad:(

Instead of using the search function here I use Google - site:battersbox.ca top 30 - if you use site:battersbox.ca in your search it is limited to this site. Add a year to limit it to that year (not perfect but helps I find).
