Get ready Vancouver bauxites, Ricky Tiedemann has shown he should be there. He threw five perfect innings today with nine K's. In twenty innings this season has conceded five hits with 33 K's. His lone blemish is the ten walks but he didn't walk anyone on Friday. Dunedin shutout Bradenton. Maximo Castillo pitched well for New Hampshire and two solo home runs were enough offense. Buffalo lost but Jordan Groshans did well on his AAA debut. Vancouver were rained out.

Buffalo 6 Worcester 8

Reading 1 New Hampshire 2

Vancouver at Hillsboro - postponed

Dunedin 7 Bradenton 0

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Baseball can be a funny game sometimes. Jordan Groshans hit .211 in Dunedin on a rehab assignment. So what does he do in his first AAA game? He singled in a run in his first at-bat. He had an RBI ground out in his second, and doubled off the wall in left in his third. Otto Lopez is hitting .063 in Dunedin, he will probably hit the ground running in AAA next week. Unfortunately Groshans hit into a double play his fourth time up. Samad Taylor tripled and scored. Gabriel Moreno had one hit in five tries. Dexter Fowler and Nathan Lukes also had two hits each.

Shaun Anderson was beaten up pretty good, seven runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings.

Maximo Castillo was back to good Maximo. He allowed just one run in six innings. Once again he K'd more than his innings, seven K's to two walks in six.

NH scored their two runs on back to back home runs. Will Robertson and Ryan Gold each hit their first shots of the year in the fifth. Tanner Morris had two hits to keep his batting average just under .300.

As mentioned above Ricky Tiedemann was dominant with five perfect innings. Jimmy Robbins followed and threw three shutout innings, just two hits allowed.

Angel Del Rosario had a good game for the Dunedin Jays going 3-4 with three RBI. Del Rosario plays short at we know he can run. He is listed at six feet tall, looks athletic, and when I watched some of the game seemed to have a quick bat. He played in the FCL last season and is now in Dunedin at age 19. Definitely one to watch for the rest of the season. Another hitter who has been scuffling is Gabriel Martinez, he had two hits. I also saw Damiano Palmegiani make some fine plays at third and show a strong arm. He does have a powerful build, he just needs to hit enough.

Three Stars

Third Star - Maximo Castillo

Second Star - Angel Del Rosario

First Star - Ricky Tiedemann

Every once in a while some old guy realizes just how out of touch they are with pop culture. Rickroll has been around for about 15 years. I found out about it 2 days ago.

I guess Ricky Tiedeman is now our no.3 prospect and Sem Robberse no.4. Would be interesting to see which minor league level they end up with at the end of the year, Tiedeman clearly too advanced for A and should be in A+ soon, could he finish at AA?

Tiedmann and Robberse may take # 1 overall mid year or at the end of the year. Would love to see both in AA this year.

Current #1 Moreno is not dominating in AAA but could adjust/improve enough to be promoted. Bo/Semien and others have struggled as well. Probably temporary. He would have to take ABs away from C/IF/DH which should not be hard. If he earn a promotion then he will not sit but instead play.

#2 O Martinez is struggling with batting average and walks. But his HR power is elite. Disappointing, but struggling can make you better.

#3 Groshans has Avg and OBP in his favor. He needs good health and power. With good health we will know what we have.

Buffalo won 9-7 today in 10 innings.  Samad Taylor doubled in two runs in the 10th, went to third on the throw and then stole home for the 9th run. Adrian Hernandez struck out the last batter in the 10th for the save.

Slot value of #1 pick (Balt) is $8,842,200. Will be interested to see Jays strategy with the two comp picks and extra cash. Do the Jays finally keep one of Shane Farrell's 1st rounders?

Drafts are fun, but especially years later.
  • 2021: None up yet, but Gunnar Hoglund  and Ricky Tiedemann  were the Jays top 2 picks.
  • 2020: None up - Austin Maritn has helped though by being traded.  Now he is hitting 239/382/310 in AA over 18 games for Minnesota.
  • 2019: Alek Manoah  makes this a winning class already, 1st round pick.
  • 2018: Nick Allgeyer is the only one who has ML service time (12th round).  #2 round Griffin Conine has helped via a trade, and Jordan Groshans looks promising, if injury prone right now.
  • 2017: 1st round Nate Pearson, 3rd Riley Adams, 4th Kevin Smith, 9th Zach Logue (traded), and 16th Ty Tice have all reached the majors but none has a full WAR yet.  Other high picks were Logan Warmoth (1st round), and 2nd round Hagen Danner (was a catcher, now a reliever)
  • 2016: Ah, some meat on these bones at last: Bo Bichette  (2nd round), Cavan Biggio (3rd), Kirby Snead (10th), T.J. Zeuch (1st), Zach Jackson (3rd), Josh Palacios (4th), with J.B. Woodman the 2nd round pick (traded for Aledmys Díaz who was traded for Trent Thornton)
  • 2015: Travis Bergen, Tayler Saucedo the only ones signed who played in the majors so far.  Top pick was Jon Harris (hasn't played this year at any level for anyone and at 28 probably retired).  A flop draft.  FYI: no player in the 2nd round has reached 3 WAR yet, but the 3rd round saw Brandon Lowe  drafted (damn you Rays!)
So 6-7 years to know if a draft was a flop I'd say.  But Manoah has made the 2019 one a success no matter what imo, and trading Martin+ for Berrios I'd say has worked well for the mini-2020 draft.  I just wish BR would make an IFA list like the draft list as that would be a lot of fun to look at too.  I've asked for it and they said it was on their list of things to do but lord knows if they ever will.

Tiedemann is 19. Robberse is 20. No rush to promote them.

Danner had a rough start in AA. I don't think you can hide very long on a 40 roster as a 23 year old reliever doing poorly in AA. Kinda do or die for him now.
