It was a good start to the season for the affiliates. New Hampshire were the only losers while Buffalo won two. Several starting pitchers had good nights and seven hitters went deep for the first time, including Orelvis.

Iowa 2 Buffalo 7 - game one

Iowa 0 Buffalo 1 -game two

New Hampshire 6 Portland 11

Vancouver 8 Spokane 6 - 10 innings

Bradenton 4 Dunedin 8

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

These hitters started the season by registering their first home run: Logan Warmoth, Tanner Morris, Orelvis Martinez, Addison Barger, Rikelbin De Castro, Damiano Palmegiani and Adriel Sotolongo. Josh Palacios hit his second.

Shaun Anderson and Casey Lawrence had excellent starts for the Bisons. I think Anderson might be at the front of the line if a callup is required.

Elvis Luciano gave up six runs in two innings. Joey Murray came out of the bullpen and was rusty after basically not pitching for a year. He recorded a couple of K's in his first inning but a hit and a couple of walks loaded the bases and a grand slam duly followed. Murray was excellent over his next three innings, just one hit and five K's.

Adam Kloffenstein returned to Vancouver and he wasn't any better than he was in 2021. He pitched four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. Just like the parent club, the C's rallied from a deficit to win. Down 4-0, the C's led 6-4 going to the bottom of the ninth but Spokane tied the game and Davis Schneider had to throw out a runner at the plate for the third out. In the tenth a Riley Tirotta double gave Vancouver all they would need to win.

There was a lot of buzz around Ricky Tiedemann in the off-season and he lived up to the hype as he made his first professional start for Dunedin. Five innings, eight strikeouts. He did give up two runs but they were in his last inning as he tired.

Estivan Machado had only one at bat in 2021 as he battled injuries. He had three hits on Friday.

The Dunedin lineup will be one I will be watching carefully over the next few months. In addition to Machado and De Castro, Dasan Brown is a former top 30 prospect. Adriel Sotolongo, Amell Brazoban, Victor Mesia and Gabriel Martinez all hit well for the FCL Jays. Add in 2021 draftee Damiano Palmegiani and Rainer Nunez and there is a player to watch at every position.

The Jays top prospects are roughly evenly divided among their minor league affiliates. Buffalo has five, New Hampshire seven, Vancouver six and Dunedin four. One is in FCL, three were traded, and four are still unassigned (Carter, Groshans, Pardinho and Van Eyk).

Three Stars

Third Star - Casey Lawrence

Second Star - Ricky Tiedemann

First Star - Shaun Anderson

MILB has changed how they present box scores and there is no longer a Blue Jay specific link.

My favourite page for a daily minor league update is on MLB.com and it still works as normal. Everything on a single page, plain text, no clutter. Perfect.

You forgot to put the link.

Au contraire - I put the link, it just didn’t work. Sorry about that. Let’s try without the html:

I have this as one of my 10 google browser shortcuts.

I go to the correct date after it opens, but every few days I edit the date on the shortcut.

Some SPs threw 70 pitches which is a good workload. C Lawrence, S Anderson and R Tiedemann pitched v well. Kloff 60 pitches 41k and no walks but the results were 4 Er. J Murray 73 pitches sort of proves that his arm is fine.

Kyle Johnston saved 2 1 run games so far. He has done well and may be able to help the Jays if they need help as the season continues.

Early I know, but Adam Kloffenstein needs to pick it up this season if he's ever going to be a legitimate prospect.

If I remember right, Kloffenstein was a highly regarded proect going into the draft but was looking for a lot of money. The Jays picked his teammate Jordan Groshans in the first round, not just because they liked him but also they thought it might help sway Kloffenstein to sign with them if they got a chance to pick him, which they did in the third round. Kloffenstein signed for overslot and some thought the Jays had made a steal. I may be remembering this wrong, though.

You’re correct re: signing bonus over slot allocation and the hype. Big right hander from Texas. Vancouver made some park adjustments that’s turned the left field bleachers into a HR haven. It’s still a spacious park so I wouldn’t put too much stock into the ERs. I’ve seen him pitch a few times. His stuff is good but I don’t think he’ll be a front line pitcher. Maybe a 5th starter or a late innings guy (6th to 8th innings).

Kloffenstein certainly didn't have a good start, but one positive sign is that his major issue from 2021 didn't show up, as he issued zero walks. He was giving up too much hard contact, but he was at his best in his last inning of work, so some opening day nerves could have happened. Not that I'm particularly optimistic about him after last season.

Elvis Luciano was a disaster, giving up 4 doubles, a triple and a homerun in just 2 innings.

I’m looking forward to seeing Kloff again in person. I saw him pitch twice live but that was a couple of years ago now. When I saw him before, I saw him on good days and he ranged from very good to dominant in those starts. I don’t know that the stuff screams top prospect though. It’s the Halladay/Carpenter arsenal (no, I’m not suggesting he’s that kind of prospect) - 92-94 sinker with good movement and a sharp 1 to 7 curve. He threw the sinker in to both LH and RH batters which was interesting. Even then, he seemed to struggle with control. He is one prospect that will have to prove it at every level with the current de emphasis on sinkers.
