There is an old saying in baseball that hitters are going to hit. It basically means that some hitters just know how to hit and can do so in any situation. Otto Lopez is going to hit. After hitting well everywhere before this season, he hit .330 in New Hampshire and now he is hitting .333 in Buffalo. It seems safe to assume that Lopez will hit in the major leagues. It might be good for the Jays to pick a position and let Lopez become proficient in it.

Lopez helped Buffalo to yet another win. Zach Logue pitched well. Maximo Castillo pitched just as well for New Hampshire as Tanner Kirwer and Vinny Capra went deep. Vancouver lost a back and forth game. Dunedin had just one hit through seven innings but pulled out a 2-0 win.

Rochester 3 Buffalo 6

New Hampshire 7 Harrisburg 0

Vancouver 7 Everett 9

St Lucie 0 Dunedin 2

FCL Phillies 10 FCL Blue Jays 7

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Forrest Wall and Otto Lopez , at the top of the order, did a lot of the damage. Wall was 2-2 with a walk and a sac fly. He scored two runs. Meanwhile Lopez was 2-4 and drove in two runs. Lopez is hitting .333 after his promotion to AAA. Kevin Smith got off to a slow start this season but started hitting and finally got his average to .300 on July 29. But he has hit under .150 in August and his average is now down to .278. Josh Palacios was back in the lineup for the Bisons.

Zach Logue pitched six shutout innings, five hits, no walks, five K's. Marcus Reyes, just up from NH, gave up all three runs. Kyle Johnston, who the Jays acquired at the 2019 trade deadline, pitched another clean inning. He has been lights out since moving to the bullpen.

Vinny Capra hit a three run home run in the first inning. Tanner Kirwer walked in the first and scored on Capra's home run. He singled in a run in the second inning and hit a two run home run in the fourth. Jordan Groshans didn't get a hit but he did walk four times.

Maximo Castillo threw six shutout innings, five hits, one walk, five K's. Castillo has a 9-3 record in 17 games. His season has been somewhat up and down, his WHIP is 1.45 but his FIP is over 5. His June and July were better with WHIP's of 1.17 and 1.29. I would say the jury is still out on Maximo, however he is still just 22. Of note Johnny Barbato, who is usually a starter, pitched out of the pen and struck out five of the six hitters he faced.

Paxton Schultz allowed four runs in four innings, and the bullpen gave up five. Despite being down 4-0 the C's scored five to take a 5-4 lead. But that bullpen let the lead go.

Eight of the C's hitters had a hit, six scored a run and five drove in a run. Luis De Los Santos, Spencer Horwitz and Sebastian Espino had two hits each.

The D Jays were no-hit through five innings, Hugo Cardona doubled in the sixth to break it up. Midway through the eighth inning the score was 0-0 even though the Jays were being out-hit 7-1. Harry Ray led off the eighth with a single, Mac Mueller walked and then with two outs Steward Berroa singled in both runners. Berroa promptly stole his 37th base of the season.

The Jays used five pitchers. Naswell Paulino started but only pitched one inning. Michael Dominguez lived dangerously through 3.2 innings but escaped unscathed.

Three Blue Jays hitters in the FCL gave up six home runs to the Phillies. The Jays did not homer. Rikelbin De Castro was 2-3 with a walk and a triple. His average is getting back close to .200. It has not been a good season for the 18 year old but maybe he can finish strongly in the last month of the season.

Three Stars

Third Star - Maximo Castillo

Second Star - Zach Logue

First Star - Tanner Kirwer

C= Kris?? Please help clear the brain foggy, Gerry. 🥴

Sorry about that, I will fix it.

The mystery pitcher is Kyle Johnston who is an interesting player to follow now that he is in the bullpen.

Nate Pearson starts for Buffalo today. I don't know how this fits with his new bullpen role but we will see how much he pitches today.

Pearson looked phenomenal in his one inning today, like the Pearson of a few years ago.
tercet - Saturday, August 14 2021 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#404936) #
No he didn't ramone, he still has no clue where his pitches are going, still missing his spots far more often then hitting, he threw two fastballs into the LH batters box.
Mike Green - Saturday, August 14 2021 @ 02:03 PM EDT (#404942) #
I wasn't watching, but the boxscore says that Pearson threw 13 pitches in his inning of work and 8 were strikes.  That's certainly a better inning than he was throwing earlier this year.
tercet - Saturday, August 14 2021 @ 02:13 PM EDT (#404943) #
Ok I'll agree with that, his pitches were more "in the zone/strikes". But he is still missing his spots as most of his pitches aren't going where they are supposed to go, he threw two fastballs that landed into the LH batters box.
Given NP's extended history of having very little clue of where his pitches were going, today's outing changed absolutely nothing with what a reasonable person should expect from NP in the near future.

Who wants to do a deep dive on what -of abby- significance Groshan's 4 walk day might mean.

We just need the version of Pearson that can blow hitters away with heat.
Hitting a 100mph fastball from a pitcher who lacks command?
I think I can watch that.

Johnston was rule 5 eligible last year.
I doubt he gets protection this year.

Clint, you and me will probably never see eye to eye, you are a glasses half full person about prospects and I am a glasses half empty person who has no problem pointing out the obvious flaws of players.
I used to be alot like you, but it got boring hoping for the best of prospects and always being wrong.
I remember in 2018 you and me had this exact same discussion about SRF in which you were convinced he changed and he might be something, it was clear in 2018 that nothing changed and he would probably be nothing (which has been the case so far).
Despite NP being god awful in '20 and '21 in the majors, with obvious minor league flaws in '19 and '21. I admire your optimism based on off 1ip/13 pitches in AAA in which he looked meh, to be convinced that NP has actually changed.
Perhaps one day we can see eye to eye again!
tercet - Saturday, August 14 2021 @ 04:56 PM EDT (#404957) #
Scott, I would love for that to be the case!
But given NP's lackluster milb/mlb track record with some obvious flaws and the fact that NP was clearly missing his spot more often then hitting today, I think most people should try to be realistic and not expect much if anything from NP in the near future.
He might be something this year or a couple years down the road, but the odds are overwhemingly this year that he will probably not amount to much and people shouldn't expect some 2007 Joba performance from NP. Heck Joba might be a good comp for NP, another highly hyped FB/SL SP prospect who never lived up to the hype due to obvious lackluster command/control.

Patrick Murphy is a Nationals.

Merryweather will be out of options next year. Not really a problem.
Same with Borucki.

Tercet, not appreciating you using my name, I actually avoid all forums you are on, you a very negative person. Now here is another forum I will need to avoid due to you.
tercet - Saturday, August 14 2021 @ 05:43 PM EDT (#404962) #
Uhh, pretty much anyone who has been on this forum over 10 years probably knows who everyone is.
Sorry I point out the flaws of players and choose not to relentlessly hype flawed baseball players which therefore makes me too negative. (Come on man really?)
Look like I said earlier, you are a glasses half full, I am a glasses half empty person and evidently we will never see eye to eye in our different baseball opinions.
Anyways, lets hope NP improves his command/control drastically and amounts to more then being more then Joba Chamberlain which is his probable career outcome right now.

Angel Del Rosario with 4 stolen bases today and 5 yesterday bringing his season total to 20 with 0 caught.
Kelekin - Saturday, August 14 2021 @ 08:06 PM EDT (#404979) #
Nice to see from Del Rosario! Quite a few solid early FCL performances. J.C. Masson and this year's 7th rounder Jaden Rudd are off to hot starts.

In the DOSL, our only 16-year old hitter, catcher Jonathan Peguero, leads the team in OPS. He signed in January for 400K. Luis Garcia, who signed for 520K, is also off to a strong start. Beltre has been a bit disappointing, but his 14 BB to 9 K is great to see.

Well I for one had no idea that "ramone" was Clint. Never have come close to connecting the two.

Now I'm going to have to figure out who tercet is.

Just realizing how few of my Jays Twitter follows follow me back. Now I'm depressed.
bpoz - Sunday, August 15 2021 @ 08:55 AM EDT (#405021) #
I still have Pearson as my #1 prospect but he is running out of time to stay there. If he overcomes injuries and his other issues like command then he can still reach his potential, which is supposed to be a dominant SP.

Over a long period of time prospects have fooled me like T Snider and surprised me like K Pillar. Currently Adrian Hernandez is surprising me.

I now believe that large quantities of decent prospects is a favorable factor for some success. C Young, O Lopez, J Davis, D Smith Jr, T Saucedo, J Romano. J Davis, DSjr, T Saucedo and Romano have reached and are doing something of value.
ISLAND BOY - Sunday, August 15 2021 @ 11:32 AM EDT (#405022) #
I think Gabriel Moreno could be the Jay's top prospect before long. The front office is very high on him. I know nothing about Jordan Groshans except what I read on here and seeing a few at bats during spring training, but I wonder if he'll ever actually be a player of any consequence for the Jays considering the hype that used to surround him.
bpoz - Sunday, August 15 2021 @ 11:35 AM EDT (#405023) #
This years prospect success is being carried by Manoah (very impressive), Espinal (good) and J Romano (promisingly quite good after 30IP prior to this year).
ISLAND BOY - Sunday, August 15 2021 @ 11:55 AM EDT (#405025) #
Manoah seems like an outlier for the farm system this year. There seems to be very few pitchers doing well, and a whole lot of position players with good stat lines, or at least showing some promise.
92-93 - Sunday, August 15 2021 @ 01:01 PM EDT (#405026) #
It's good to hear differing opinions from people who actually watch the minor league games. What's gilfisher up to?
bpoz - Sunday, August 15 2021 @ 01:14 PM EDT (#405027) #
This is not a big deal me saying that I don't give "the farm" credit for Manoah. We scouted and chose the right person. Sorry I just messed up my own point. Manoah dominated the NWL in 2019 and absolutely destroyed AAA in 2022. I don't like to give credit to the farm because he became a V good ML pitcher very fast but maybe needed that minor league time.

Another example would be Olerud with practically no minor league development.
ayjackson - Monday, August 23 2021 @ 12:11 AM EDT (#405492) #
Gil Fisher? Now there's a name I've not heard in quite some time.
John Northey - Monday, August 23 2021 @ 01:50 AM EDT (#405493) #
Olerud wasn't practically no minor league time. He was straight from draft to the majors. 0 games in minors until late in his career (for rehab iirc).

To me Manoah is a minor league victory - he was pushed just hard enough to reach quickly and succeed. Minors are hard to do right - you need to be ready for guys like Manoah & Kirk who can zip through fast (2 years), but also deal with guys who need more time like Bo, Biggio, and Vlad (4 seasons each, partial and full). And guys who take a longer time like Jansen (6 years), Romano (5 plus a lost year to injury), and try to figure out guys like Zeuch (4 years, but not effective in majors).

Each player needs a unique plan to maximize their abilities and set them up to be as useful to the organization as possible. Be it in a trade, playing in the majors, or just being there to fill in lineups in the minors.
