Number two on Baseball America's Top 10 Most Talented Minor League Teams was number one on the scoreboard Tuesday. The affiliates won two and lost two on Opening Night. #WeAreBlueJays

Buffalo 6 Worcester 1

The Herd scored two runs in the first and never looked back against the Boston affiliate in Trenton, New Jersey. Forrest Wall had an two-run triple among his two hits and Josh Palacios had a pair of RBI singles and a walk but was caught stealing. Logan Warmoth had two hits as well. On the flip side, Rowdy Tellez and Kevin Smith turned in 0-for-4s.

Nate Pearson struck out eight and walked only one over 3-2/3 innings of one-run ball on four hits and a hit by pitch. Southpaw Tayler Saucedo got the win by following Pearson with 2-1/3 shutout frames, stranding the bases loaded and inducing three groundball outs. Jeremy Beasley made his Jays debut with a goose egg in the eighth.

New Hampshire 11 Portland 2

The Fisher Cats—BA's second-most talented team—went all Frank Castle on the Red Sox affiliate by punishing them in their own backyard. All nine batters had at least one hit in a 16-hit ambush, including three by Gabriel Moreno who drove in a pair of runs and threw out one of three baserunners on steal attempts.. Austin Martin smacked the first pitch he saw—which was also the first MiLB pitch of 2021— for a single to right field. The former Vanderbilt Commedore also doubled, walked and was hit by a pitch to reach base four times. Brock Lundquist belted a homer among his two hits. Chavez Young had two hits, three RBI and a stolen base.

Zach Logue threw an efficient 65 pitches, 42 for strikes, over five innings of shutout ball. The left-hander offset four hits and a walk with five strikeouts for the win.

Tampa 11 Dunedin 7

The D-Jays did hold a 3-2 lead at one point but it did not last against the Yankees affiliate. Addison Barger and Justin Ammons both went deep to highlight multi-hit nights as Barger had three and Ammons had two. Zach Britton and Jhon Solarte drew three walks apiece. Miguel Hiraldo was 1-for-5 with a stolen base but made an error at second base. Orelvis Martinez walked once in five plate appearances.

All five Dunedin hurlers gave up at least a run as they yielded 12 hits, 12 walks and a hit by pitch. Juan DePaula took the loss as he was roughed up for five runs in 1-1/3 innings. 2019 18th round pick Brandon Eisert made his pro debut. The Oregon State lefty was victimized for an unearned run and allowed two DePaula runners to score in two-thirds of an inning.

Tri-City 4 Vancouver 0

The Canadians had at least one runner on base for their first eight at-bats but could not cross home plate. Philip Clarke had a perfect night at the dish with three walks and a base hit in that order. Tanner Morris singled and walked. Spencer Horwitz walked twice and Cameron Eden walked and stole a base. D.J. Neal and L.J. Talley had base knocks. Will Robertson and Ronny Brito were hitless in their four ABs.

Adam Kloffenstein managed to overcome three hits and four walks over 3-2/3 shutout innings. He struck out three and got four outs on the grass. Lefty Luke Gillingham took the loss. He stranded a runner for Kloffenstein to end the fourth but a two-out error at first by Horwitz led to two unearned runs. Andrew McInVale struck out four but gave up a two-run homer over two innings. Sam Ryan worked a one-walk ninth.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Zach Logue, New Hampshire

2. Austin Martin, New Hampshire

1. Gabriel Moreno, New Hampshire

I’m going to go out on a limb and presume I speak for many Bauxites, both old and new, when I say: welcome back Minor League Update!!!

Thanks to the MLU crew who work so hard to bring us this BB staple. I know it was what got me hooked on Da Box, and I look forward to a great season. Play ball!

Welcome back #2JB, and thanks for your efforts. The new High A/Low A and league names are going to take some getting used to.

One suggestion, the C's are High A now, Dunedin Low A. I think the write-ups have always been highest to lowest levels in the past.

Adam Kloffenstien was bumped two levels, but still pitched for the Vancouver Canadians, interesting twist. I would be curious what his velocity was after reports of a bump last season.

I've read that Joe Murray is not a starter because they are still stretching him.
Some people wonder if he might have been on the taxi squad.

Thanks for this #2. So glad to see the kids are playing again. Lots to look forward to in the Jays minor system.

Nice to see Martin get a hit on his first pitch seen as a pro. Leading off is interesting. Should be interesting to see how he develops this year. The system is getting pretty full right now - which is a good thing - hopefully we see some big time development from these kids so the Jays have lots of choices for trades, and for promotions.

BA named NH as the minor league team with the 2nd most talent. I'm not sure I remember us having an affiliate this loaded before. SWR, Moreno, Groshans, and Martin are all legit top-100 prospects and there are another 4 or 5 really interesting guys. Going to be very fun to see how guys develop.

Was going to make a comment about reading #2JB's Fisher Cat report in the OP but I decided not to, then decided not to not to.

Cancelled my milbTV subscription that I've had since the days of Brett Lawrie in Vegas. Used to get all AAA and AA games and still would, but also used to get almost all Lansing games. Neither Dunedin or Vancouver games will be shown with the odd exception like at Bradenton in whatever they call the FSL now. Of course, this is the year the Jays load the AA team. Darn.

Hope the NH manager and coaching staff are good.

You can get New Hampsire and Trenton/Buffalo? Or not?
    hypobole - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 02:55 PM EDT (#397313) #
All AAA and AA games are still broadcast, but I can't get them because I cancelled.
    scottt - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 03:21 PM EDT (#397315) #
    I see.

Well, Dunedin is the new Lansing and Vancouver/Hilboro is the new Dunedin.
I would imagine that having fewer affiliates makes it easier to cover them all.

I thought so as well, scottt. Here's why i think not.

Everyone has heard about the Jays having a single broadcast crew for both TV and radio. milb TV has been doing that for years. The Lansing's Jesse Goldberg-Strassler was both for instance. Most minors teams are privately owned and do their best to build a fanbase which includes radio. But the FSL teams play in their complexes and are almost all owned by their parent clubs. Attendance is under 1000 usually and the teams aren't money makers, just a way to use the existing complex. So no radio team and no broadcast. Even the Tampa Yankees.

I live just outside Toronto (Brampton) so I have no idea if The C's had radio. I know Sportsnet had a few games, but no milb home games and only a few away games. Maybe that will change now that they are High A, but pandemic, so no Vancouver. Don't think they will send a radio team to Hillsboro. The Hops themselves have TV, but not the C's.

Todays New Hampshire game has been postponed, they will play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Yosver Zulueta starts for Dunedin today. Nick Algeyer starts for Buffalo.
    scottt - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 04:59 PM EDT (#397320) #
Yeah, but I would think the Canadians situation is only temporary.
Before Covid, we got some Cs games on Sportsnet.
Would make even more sense now that it's team the prospects can hardly skip.

Same with AAA. Trenton is a ghost team.

Found 2019 per game attendance for 160 minor league teams in 2019. Here's our 4.
    #9 Buffalo - 7981
    #24 Vancouver - 6210
    #50 NH - 4716
    #160 Dunedin - 203

Looks like Dunedin fans have had years of practising social distancing pre-pandemic..

Heh. Florida seems to be a wasteland when it comes to attending baseball games. Rays only cracked 2 million their first season, Marlins 3 times (first season their peak, the first time they won the WS - they spent money then, and in 2012 when they opened their new park and renamed the team 'Miami' instead of 'Florida'. The last 2 years before COVID the Marlins had under 900k per season show up, a low that even Tampa Bay hasn't reached. The Expos had 749,550 their final season after cracking 1 million the year before.
    hypobole - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 05:34 PM EDT (#397323) #
Yeah, Florida. Dunedin was the worst, but of all 120 full season clubs attendance, 7 of the lowest 9 figures were FSL teams.
    Shoeless Joe - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 05:43 PM EDT (#397324) #
The NH team is good, but I don’t think it’s as good as a lot of vlad/bo/biggie teams, or as talented as the Thor/Sanchez/Niccolino Lansing team.

I still like the chances of Groshans becoming the top SS in the org.

Guerrero was typically promoted mid-year and Biggio didn't catch up until later.

The 2017 Lansing team with Guerrero in it finished 7th out of 16 teams.
Lots of bad hitters. Guerrero .888 OPS, Bichette 1.071.  No Biggio.

Rotation of Ellenbest, Ravel, Guttierez, Yennsy Diaz,  Patrick Murphy and Justin Maese.

The good one was the 2018 New Hampshire team. (2nd out of 12 teams)
That had Jon Berti, Bichette, Biggio breaking out, Davis, Espinal towards the end, Gurriel for 14 games, Harold Ramirez.
Guerrero had an OPS of 1.120 for the 61 games he was there but Bichette only .796.

Rotation of Jon Harris, Romano, Zeuch, DeGraaf, Saucedo, SRF,

None of the AAA teams were that good.

Also thanks to the ML Crew for another year of Minor League Updates.

What happened to Zulurta? He makes 3 pitches and then is pulled? What contagion from the Jays is spreading????
    John Northey - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 08:03 PM EDT (#397334) #
Just went looking into a couple of years I knew the Jays had some good prospects and ran into the best record of any Jays team I'd suspect - the 1992 DSL Blue Jays East - 68-2 record. Yep, just 2 losses all year. 1.78 team ERA, 307/410/442 batting line. Sadly they don't list the stats on BR for that club beyond the overall figures but wow, that was amazing. Found some details after a bit of searching. Known future ML'ers on that team were pitchers Carlos Almanzar, Edwin Hurtado and Dilson Torres. Yet despite all that they lost in the first round of the playoffs. Go figure.

Can someone remind me, why was Barger placed on the restricted list in 2019 - PEDs? Something else?
    scottt - Wednesday, May 05 2021 @ 09:14 PM EDT (#397343) #
I don't we ever found out about Barger.
A PED suspension would have been announced.

It looks like he just went home.
