Here are some things I noted from Wednesdays games:
In case you missed it, Bo hit two home runs.
TJ Zeuch struggled. He was unable to complete five innings and walked five. He also gave up seven hits, leading to four runs. Zeuch still has some learning to do in AAA. His WHIP is now over 1.50 and he has walked more hitters than he has stuck out. His walks, 16 in 26 innings are worrying.
Rowdy Tellez and Jonathan Davis were both 0-4. Tellez hasn't found his swing yet and Davis is just hitting .233 this season.
Yennsy Diaz had a bad start. He walked six in less than five innings, and was tagged with eight runs, six earned. The fielders made four errors behind him but most of the damage was his own. Less than 50% of his pitches were strikes.
After I mentioned Zach Jackson last week and his improved command, he walked three hitters in an inning on Wednesday.
Kevin Smith was 0-4 and is 0-7 over his last two games, after his weekend home run binge. He still cannot get his BA over 200, it has been under 200 since April 23rd.
Demi Orimoloye had a torrid June but July was a lot colder. He had just three hits in his first ten games in July. But he was 3-3 in this game and it was his third multi-hit game out of his last four. So ten games of almost no hits, now three games with seven hits.
Maximo Castillo got the win with one earned run allowed in five innings. It wasn't all good, there were nine base runners in those five innings. His ERA is 3.09.
The best hitter in Bluefield is not Miguel Hiraldo or Leonardo Jimenez, its 22 year old, 38th round pick, Ryan Sloniger. He was 3-4 with a triple and is hitting .455 with an OPS of 1302. Sloniger spent some time in Vancouver at the start of their season and hit reasonably well there too.
Some people had McGregory Contreras on their top 30 lists last season but I don't think anyone will this year. Contreras is repeating Vancouver and is hitting just .239. Given his less than stellar defense, his time as a prospect is almost done.
Gabriel Martinez is still just 16, for another week, and has generally struggled a bit this season. He has not struck out too much but his batting average has hovered around .200. On Wednesday he collected four hits, two doubles, and drove in three.
Leonal Callez is listed as a 2B but he is playing more first base. He drove in four runs on Wednesday and has driven in nine over the last two games. He is hitting well for a 2B but more average for a 1B.
