One thing to note was David Phelps who pitched an inning in Dunedin. I look and Conine and some Lansing hitters below.
Scranton 3 Buffalo 0 - Game 1
Scranton 4 Buffalo 0 - Game 2
Chance Adams shut out the Bisons on three hits in game one. Shaun Morimando pitched six innings and was charged with all three runs. Nestor Cortes did better in the second game, holding the Bisons to one hit, a single by Jordan Patterson. Conor Fisk started for the Bisons and gave up three runs in three innings.
There are some ugly batting numbers in Buffalo. Alen Hanson and Billy McKinney are hitting under .200. Anthony Alford has cooled off again, just two hits in his last five games, six strikeouts in todays doubleheader.
Bowie 3 New Hampshire 2
Yennsy Diaz pitched well and had NH in position to win with a 2-1 lead in the eighth. But Taylor Saucedo put a couple of runners on and then Kevin Smith booted one to load the bases. Bowie scored two and won the game. Diaz pitched seven innings, four hits, three walks, four K's.
Vinny Capra drove in both NH runs, one with a single and another with his second home run. The hot Forrest Wall struck out four times. Riley Adams had three K's. Josh Palacios had two hits to join Capra.
Charlotte 2 Dunedin 0
The Jays were out-hit 11-4 and shutout. Norberto Obeso had two hits and all four hits were singles.
Joey Murray went six innings and held things tight, one run allowed over six. David Phelps followed and pitched an inning.
Lansing 5 Great Lakes 6
It looked good for a while. Josh Hiatt had a no-hitter through three but blew up good in the fourth leading to four runs. Troy Watson piggy-backed another four innings and was charged with the other two runs.
Griffin Conine again led the offense, he was 2-3 and hit his fourth home run. Hagen Danner and Nick Podkul also homered. Conine has received a lot of attention over his hot start, he is hitting .462 with 75% of his hits going for extra bases. That is probably unsustainable. His problem last year was strike outs. He had a 30% strikeout rate in Vancouver. This year, in a small sample, he has 7 K's in 26 AB's, a 27% rate. We will need to watch this carefully as the league adjusts to him, or when he gets promoted. I see that Gabriel Moreno has just nine at-bats in the last eight days, he might be nursing a minor injury.
When you talk with a baseball player they always stress consistency. Being able to pick up an extra hit each week makes a big difference by the end of the season, as does avoiding a slump. Several Lugnuts have been unable to sustain their performance. Nick Podkul started slowly and got his average up to .300. He is now hitting .246. DJ Neal was hitting over .300 on May 8th, he is now hitting .252. Reggie Pruitt got off to a hot start, he is now at .259. All of them need a big second half to earn that promotion.
DSL
The DSL Jays lost 6-4. Adrian Montero was the only multi-hit batter with two hits.
