Every affiliate lost, and Buffalo did it twice. Griffin Conine was one of the bright spots, he picked up another home run. Yennsy Diaz pitched seven very good innings. But there was not much hitting on the farm. The Bisons had four hits over two games.

One thing to note was David Phelps who pitched an inning in Dunedin. I look and Conine and some Lansing hitters below.

Scranton 3 Buffalo 0 - Game 1

Scranton 4 Buffalo 0 - Game 2

Chance Adams shut out the Bisons on three hits in game one. Shaun Morimando pitched six innings and was charged with all three runs. Nestor Cortes did better in the second game, holding the Bisons to one hit, a single by Jordan Patterson. Conor Fisk started for the Bisons and gave up three runs in three innings.

There are some ugly batting numbers in Buffalo. Alen Hanson and Billy McKinney are hitting under .200. Anthony Alford has cooled off again, just two hits in his last five games, six strikeouts in todays doubleheader.

Bowie 3 New Hampshire 2

Yennsy Diaz pitched well and had NH in position to win with a 2-1 lead in the eighth. But Taylor Saucedo put a couple of runners on and then Kevin Smith booted one to load the bases. Bowie scored two and won the game. Diaz pitched seven innings, four hits, three walks, four K's.

Vinny Capra drove in both NH runs, one with a single and another with his second home run. The hot Forrest Wall struck out four times. Riley Adams had three K's. Josh Palacios had two hits to join Capra.

Charlotte 2 Dunedin 0

The Jays were out-hit 11-4 and shutout. Norberto Obeso had two hits and all four hits were singles.

Joey Murray went six innings and held things tight, one run allowed over six. David Phelps followed and pitched an inning.

Lansing 5 Great Lakes 6

It looked good for a while. Josh Hiatt had a no-hitter through three but blew up good in the fourth leading to four runs. Troy Watson piggy-backed another four innings and was charged with the other two runs.

Griffin Conine again led the offense, he was 2-3 and hit his fourth home run. Hagen Danner and Nick Podkul also homered. Conine has received a lot of attention over his hot start, he is hitting .462 with 75% of his hits going for extra bases. That is probably unsustainable. His problem last year was strike outs. He had a 30% strikeout rate in Vancouver. This year, in a small sample, he has 7 K's in 26 AB's, a 27% rate. We will need to watch this carefully as the league adjusts to him, or when he gets promoted. I see that Gabriel Moreno has just nine at-bats in the last eight days, he might be nursing a minor injury.

When you talk with a baseball player they always stress consistency. Being able to pick up an extra hit each week makes a big difference by the end of the season, as does avoiding a slump. Several Lugnuts have been unable to sustain their performance. Nick Podkul started slowly and got his average up to .300. He is now hitting .246. DJ Neal was hitting over .300 on May 8th, he is now hitting .252. Reggie Pruitt got off to a hot start, he is now at .259. All of them need a big second half to earn that promotion.

DSL

The DSL Jays lost 6-4. Adrian Montero was the only multi-hit batter with two hits.

Capra is the GOAT.

The Jays have one of the worse offense in MLB. The starting pitching is 20th by ERA, but dead last in walks.
The pen is 13th or about in most categories, but 25th in HR allowed. Getting Phelps could help quite a bit.

Jackson Rees who has been excellent pitching for Lansing has been promoted to Dunedin.

In the Lansing game Moreno is catching, Gold DH and Danner 1B.
I have Danner and Moreno on my top 30 list so it is good that they are getting ABs.

Was wondering what more Rees had to do to get promoted!

Even though a lot of guys like that don't make it, it's hard not to root for them.

In that vein, Graham Spraker, bumped up from Dunedin to make a Buffalo start seems to have pitched decently - 5.1 IP, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Pretty good for an undrafted FA signing 2 years ago.

There's been a couple interesting challenges like that this year. Capra, as I understood it, was in AA because they had to fill the spot. But he has been quite consistent and really taken to the challenge. Good luck to him.

Anyone else you feel worthy of a promotion right now? I'd like to see Winckowski, Allgeyer, Wilson, and possibly Murray.

I'm sure there's an argument for Conine. I think he'll do well in A+, but I could see him getting absolutely destroyed at the high levels with his free swinging.

Conine’s got to hit for a lot of power to be interesting because there isn’t much else interesting about his game (defence, base running, strike zone control). Even before the PED suspension I wasn’t optimistic.

Rees wasn't very good in 2018, which probably contributed to the wait for his promotion to Dunedin. You have to wonder what he's doing differently this year, because his numbers are light years ahead of what he was doing last year. Sometimes, with pitchers, it just takes one adjustment to make a big difference.

Spraker was a 31st round draft pick of the Jays in 2017, not an undrafted free agent, and yes, he's been excellent thus year. Great to see him do so well in the spot start for Buffalo, only 3 hits and 2 walks in 5 1/3 innings. Maybe he gets a couple of more starts there.

Wall is the player most deserving of a promotion I think but AAA is overcrowded with OFers. I'm not as down on Conine as some here. He will probably always K a lot but his K rates are at a reasonable level. He is a work in progress but he's worth keeping an eye on. This is his first time at this level and he is absolutely destroying everything right now. (1.550 OPS after 33 PAs)

Fangraphs has an article on Groshans who is apparently out for weeks still which is unfortunate. The minor leagues should be more fun to watch than they are right now. Here are MLB pipeline's top-15 prospects not in the majors right now.

It's a good system but right now, it's also not very fun to follow (apologies to Kirk and Moreno). I think by late June, you'll have some guys back from injury and some of the young prospects in short-season ball (and probably some new draftees playing) so this is definitely a temporary phenomenon.
Kelekin - Friday, June 07 2019 @ 04:06 AM EDT (#375189) #
I am curious what a 'reasonable' level for K rates would actually be. 25% in the minor leagues seems like a recipe for disaster versus major league pitching if you can't also take walks and hit for average. I strongly believe it's too early to tell, but there are warning flags and we've seen this all before.
uglyone - Friday, June 07 2019 @ 10:33 AM EDT (#375207) #
25% is definitely approaching the danger zone, especially if it's unaccompanied by walks and power.
PeterG - Sunday, June 09 2019 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#375314) #
Sure no shortage of power in Conine's case.
