The two remaining Blue Jay farm teams begin their playoff push tonight. The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Lansing Lugnuts both start at home in their series.

Major league teams talk about the importance of playoffs for development. Its not the winning they value, its the increased intensity and pressure. That gives the teams, and the prospects, the closest approximation to the major league atmosphere that they can find. So tonight, the teams will make sure the players they value the most get to play. How will they handle the pressure? A player might come up from the team below just to get the experience. We have seen this in previous years, I believe many teams do this. We saw Josh Palacios in the lineup for New Hampshire on Monday. Will we see others such as Griffin Conine in Lansing?

New Hampshire face Trenton in the semi-final. It will be a best of five game series. Trenton finished two games ahead of New Hampshire in the regular season so the teams are evenly matched. In game one, TJ Zeuch will face Brian Keller. Hector Perez goes in game two against Nick Green. This series is set for five straight games, Wednesday through Sunday, so teams will need five starters. This is a rematch of sorts from last years FSL playoffs where Dunedin defeated Tampa. The managers in this series are the same as in last years FSL series.

Maximo Castillo is the game one starter for Lansing. Bowling Green is a Tampa affiliate and they won both the first and second half titles in their division. Combined they finished 10 games ahead of Lansing. Because the Midwest League has two halves, eight teams make the playoffs. In order to avoid a lengthy playoffs with eight teams, the first two series are three games each. After tonights game, both teams will make the 7 to 8 hour bus trip to Kentucky for games two and three.

There will be no minor league update tomorrow on tonights games. This thread will serve as the live update of the games.

It would be interesting and a bit surprising to see Conine up in Lansing. The power is definitely intriguing but he struggled otherwise in Vancouver. I would be less surprised to see Lopez up tonight.

A reliever like Watts, Johnson or Murray is a possibility. Winckowski if Lansing needs a starter.

Maybe Patrick Murphy to New Hampshire?

No score through four in NH. Zeuch has given up five hits but has been helped by two double plays and a caught stealing. Ramirez and Pentecost each have a hit.

Brody Rodning in.

Samad Taylor hits a one out double but neither Norberto Obeso or Chavez Young can bring him in. Still 1-1 after six.
Gerry - Wednesday, September 05 2018 @ 09:45 PM EDT (#365198) #
Rodning concedes a run in the seventh. A lead off single, a bunt over to second. Then, a sac fly scored the runner from second. That's unusual.

Matt Shannon pitching. With two outs, a hit and a walk puts runners on.

BG have scored two runners from second tonight, one on a sac fly and one on an infield single. Their aggression is paying off. It sounds like their parent club, Tampa Bay, has an organizational philosophy.

Romano and Harris to follow Perez, as the starters for games 3 and 4. If 5 is necessary, could be DeGraaf or Saucedo, I guess. That's an impressive looking lineup that NH has with Pentecost on a roll, Berti hitting very well, and Palacios called up, along with Bichette, Ramirez and Biggio. Bergen's doing a great job as the closer. I think they're going to be tough to beat.

In Zeuch's last 7 starts, he's had 4 games where he gave up zero earned runs, and 2 others where he gave up just 1. Over that span, he has a 29:8 K:BB ratio. That 2016 draft has the potential to be monster for the Jays, with Zeuch, Bichette, Zach Jackson, Palacios, Biggio, Snead, Winckowski, Abbadessa, Gold, Fishman, Bouchey, Chavez Young, and also Woodman exchanged for Aledmys Diaz.

Maybe Gerry can comment. Would explain the Osuna, Donaldson and Pompey decisions. Is there anyone else being 'punished?"
Shoeless Joe - Thursday, September 06 2018 @ 08:22 AM EDT (#365229) #
That article was generally hard to read, and I think the author tried to connect too many dots.

It seems to suggest the Jays regime is authoritarian, when really they decided to make moves with certainty over high risk situations.

Gerry - Thursday, September 06 2018 @ 08:29 AM EDT (#365231) #
I think the author is pulling a few things together to try and support a point. The Jays have said for a while now that they are emphasizing character in drafting and acquiring players. I can see the Osuna deal fitting into that box. But the Donaldson and Pompey issues could be a reach.

Pompey has had run-ins with managers before this year, he is very intense. On the other hand he has been known to hand out warm clothing to the homeless in winter. I don't think we know enough to know a lot about him and I don;t think you can judge someone's character from one dispute with a manager.

In summary, I am not buying the premise of those three players proving a point, although there is truth to the character issue being a priority.

J.A. Happ was traded to a Team headed to the playoffs. The return was two players that were basically unwanted/forgotten. This was a big win for the Jays.

Roberto Osuna was traded to a Team headed to the playoffs. The return was very comparable to the talent traded. This was a win for the Jays.

Josh Donaldson was traded to a Team headed to the playoffs. The return was the best deal the Jays could make - perhaps a little light. The Jays got what they wanted - is it a win?

Finally found Bo's RBI double last night in the first place I should have looked.

How he squared up the ball with that swing is beyond my comprehension.

Steve Pearce was traded to a Team headed to the playoffs. The return was light, but a good player none the less. This was not a win, but not a loss.

Seung-Hwan Oh was traded to a Team headed to the playoffs. The return was surprising and possibly amazing. This was a big win for the Jays.

John Axford's trade was a surprise. He was traded to a want-a-be trying to get into the playoffs. Getting this good a return is a bonus. This should be a win for the Jays.

Aaron Loup was traded to a want-a-be headed to the playoffs. This was a decent return. This is a win for the Jays.

Curtis Granderson was traded to a Team headed to the playoffs. The return is interesting. Jays win this one.

Every trade except Happ, Osuna and Donaldson?
John Northey - Sunday, September 16 2018 @ 11:06 PM EDT (#365867) #
Osuna was the only one who might have been here next year, and only Donaldson had any chance of a QO so only he could've produced anything and odds are he wouldn't have got the QO.  Maybe Happ would've too.

All other players getting more than a guy you need to release a week later is an improvement.

As to the drop in value for Osuna and Donaldson - who saw the mess with either coming?  Donaldson getting hurt was always a risk, but he has been healthy mostly in his career so it seemed a good idea to hold until getting the perfect offer.  Sadly he got hurt and the return looks weak.  Better than nada but not by a lot right now.  Osuna worked out well, as his direct replacement has yet to blow a save (Giles), and David Paulino has been OK so far (2 2/3 IP so not much to go on) while Hector Perez is the minor league wildcard (very wild 5+ BB/9 plus 11 K/9 in AA).
