Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine
There was lots of hitting and some good pitching on Thursday. On some nights there are only a couple of hitters with a multi hit game. Vancouver had seven of them, Dunedin had four. Sean Reid-Foley ran hot and cold but Buffalo won in the tenth inning. Max Pentecost hit a three run home run in the first inning but the Fisher Cats could not build on it and lost 5-4. Riley Adams and Kevin Smith hit well, Dunedin won 3-0. Lansing bats were hot, Chavez Young hit a grand slam, the Lugnuts won 11-8. Vancouver put up 16 hits, very high for them and won 7-1. Otto Lopez keeps on hitting. Bluefield bats were also hot, Davis Schneider went deep as the Jays won. The GCL and DSL Jays also won.

Buffalo

Buffalo won 4-3 in ten innings. Through five innings Sean Reid-Foley was working on a no-hitter. He had walked two and hit a batter. But in the sixth he walked a couple of hitters, one of them Ryan Goins, and then was taken deep for a three run home run. SRF was done soon after, his line was 5.1 3 3 3 4 9. SRF pitched really well for five innings, the nine K's were great but the four walks and the hit batter show command needs to improve. I am not sure what the Jays plan is for Craig Breslow but he pitched two perfect innings. Brandon Cumpton and Jose Fernandez held the Pigs at bay to get the win.

The Bisons first run came when Tim Lopes doubled and Roemon Fields came through with a sac fly. After going down 3-1 the Bisons tied the game thanks to three consecutive errors by the Iron Pigs. Anthony Alford delivered the game winning sac fly in the tenth. The Bisons had six hits with six hitters having one hit each.

New Hampshire

The Fisher Cats scored four runs in the first inning but could not add to it and lost 5-4. In that first inning the key hit was a three run home run by Max Pentecost. Pentecost finished with two hits. Dalton Pompey was 2-3 before being removed, I assume to break him back in slowly. Max Ramirez had three hits. Bo Bichette was 0-4, his average is down to .264.

Josh DeGraaf went 5.2 innings and was charged with three runs. Kirby Snead took the loss. After a lead off error he walked four batters leading to the tying and go-ahead runs.

Dunedin

Dunedin won 3-0. Jamie Garcia started and pitched one inning then it was normal starting pitcher Zach Logue's turn. Logue pitched six shutout innings without a walk. His line was 6 7 0 0 0 7. Logue's ERA is now 3.46.

Dunedin had nine hits and unusally four hitters had a multi hit game and five went hitless. Riley Adams had three hits. One of them was a double and he scored on a Kacy Clemens single. Clemens had two hits. Kevin Smith had two hits including his ninth home run. Ivan Castillo stayed hot with two more hits including an RBI for the third run. Santiago Espinal was 0-4 and his average is down to .196. It's not unusual for a traded player to struggle for a while as they try too hard toimpress their new bosses.

Lansing

Lansing won 11-8. Lots of offense for the Lugnuts in this game. They had eleven hits. Chavez Young had only one hit but it was a grand slam. Ryan Noda had two hits, both doubles, and walked twice. Norberto Obeso and Kevin Vicuna had two hits each.

Jordan Barrett made his first start after his promotion and he lasted just three innings with four runs allowed. Braydon Bouchey pitched well in relief, three innings, one run allowed.

Vancouver

The C's offense has improved since Otto Lopez arrived. Coincidence? Lopez and Hunter Steinmetz combined early. Steinmetz tripled in the second inning and scored when Lopez singled. In the fourth Chris Bec walked and Steinmetz doubled him to third. Lopez singled in the second run then Tanner Kirwer singled in Steinmetz. In the fifth inning Griffin Conine and Bec singled. Conine scored on an error to make it 4-1. It was 5-1 in the sixth, Kirwer tripled and Yorman Rodriguez singled him in. Lopez hit a solo shot in the eighth. Conine singled and scored on a sac fly in the ninth. Just like Dunedin, there were no hitters with just one hit. Seven hitters had multi-hit games. Lopez and Conine were both 3-5.

Elio Silva started and pitched four innings Marcus Reyes followed with four shutout innings.

Bluefield

The Jays won 5-3. The Jays bats had cooled off a little recently but they racked up eleven hits in this game. Davis Schneider hit a two run home run and added a sac fly. Rafael Lantigua, Patrick Morris and Cal Stevenson had two hits each. Four other hitters had one hit in a team performance.

Nathanael Perez pitched six innings, one run, seven k's. Andy McGuire was back to pitching and struck out two in his one inning. McGuire has played well on both sides of the ball.

GCL Blue Jays

The Jays won 2-1. They scored their two runs in the sixth inning. Warnel Valdez led off with a triple. Steward Berroa singled him in. Berroa later scored on a double by Gabe Moreno. Moreno finished with two hits. Jordan Groshans had struggled a bit recently so he was dropped down to fifth in the order. He responded with two hits. Hector Guerrero also had two and is hitting .375.

Rafael Monsion pitched five good innings. He had seven strikeouts and just one walk. Franniel Polanco was recently promoted from the DSL. This was his second game since his promotion and he shut down the Tigers for two innings.

DSL Blue Jays

The Jays won 4-1. Pitching was the name of the game. Bonus baby Ronald Govea went five innings. The only run he conceded was unearned thanks to his own error on a pickoff. His ERA is 0.73. Govea was over-shadowed by Adrian Hernandez, an 18 year old fromMexico. Hernandez went four hitless innings with five K's. His ERA is 1.00.

The Jays had just six hits. Rainer Nunez had two including his second home run. Erickvi Celedonio drove in two runs.

Three Stars

Third Star - Otto Lopez

Second Star - Davis Schneider

They are under way in Dunedin.  The GCL Jays scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first- Logan Warmoth and Vladdy Jr. walked, Jordan Groshans doubled them home, and he scored on a balk.   Vladdy scoring from first on a double is a good sign that he is running well.
Mike Green - Friday, July 13 2018 @ 01:05 PM EDT (#361706) #
9 up and 9 down (including 5 Ks)  for Alvery de los Santos, an 18 year old 6'4" righty.  Vladdy singled in his second trip.  Is it customary for the best prospect in baseball to put out a spread for the young guys (!) when on a rehab assignment?  Somehow I don't think so.
Gerry - Friday, July 13 2018 @ 01:21 PM EDT (#361707) #
Who says position in the batting order is not important? Groshans is hitting behind Warmoth and Vlad and has five RBI after three innings.

Warmoth, who is on rehab, has been hit by a pitch twice today.

Warmoth, who is on rehab, has been hit by a pitch twice today.

Reminds me when Lawrie was on rehab in Dunedin and was plunked a bunch of times. Kinda recall his rehab there ended early.

I wonder what hurt Warmoth most; probably the reminder of younger first round shortstop's hitting skills

Dave Laurila asked 6 Midwest League broadcasters who have been the best players they've seen this year. Note: some teams haven't played each other yet.

Smith mentioned by 3, including the Lansing guy. Noda only on one list, but rated #1.

Groshans is looking like another strong high-school hitter from this front office. I was worried about his swing-and-miss, but he hasn't struck out much, he's drawn some walks and shown decent power. The power hasn't been quite as strong as advertised yet, but that probably will come.

He looks like a real rbi guy to me, Pat.

Four hits for Bo tonight.

Lansing were losing 7-2 after eight innings before rallying to score five runs in the top of the ninth. But then the rains came and the game was called. In these cases the score reverts back to the previous completed the inning, so the top of the ninth gets wiped out and Lansing loses 7-2.
scottt - Saturday, July 14 2018 @ 08:59 AM EDT (#361747) #
Yeah, that's the historical way to handle it. I always thought it sucked to penalize the rallying team and only encourages the leading team to try and stall.
bpoz - Saturday, July 14 2018 @ 11:25 AM EDT (#361749) #
T Pannone just burned this years option. His first. I thought that they may consider him for the ML pen to save that option but then 8-10 more minor league starts and a AFL or Sept callup will give him enough IPs this year to prepare him to compete for a rotation spot in 2019.
PeterG - Saturday, July 14 2018 @ 02:22 PM EDT (#361754) #
Pannone could be called up sooner if starting pitchers are traded or injured.
cybercavalier - Saturday, July 14 2018 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#361758) #
LV Pigs defended the Bisons in late innings by slugging homeruns and four of the hitters on the lineup yesterday have 10-plus homeruns. On the other hand, only Bisons' J-Leb hits 10. In the lights of the Jays acquiring former players Jon Berti and Zach Stewart to fill up void in the roster, Ryan Schimpf who hit 20 plus homeruns as a Padres in San Diego is a free agent.... so would the Bisons create a righty-lefty hitter combo out of J-Leb and Schimpf?

So Andy McGuire is pitching and hitting for us?  That makes him the most interesting 28th rounder I can recall

Griffin Conine 10 days ago was hitting ,222/.256/.427 with only 1 BB vs 16 K's. In the 7 games since then he's 13 for 27, 4 2B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 5 K's.

His season line with the C's is now .324/.372/.620
Mike Green - Sunday, July 15 2018 @ 11:40 AM EDT (#361788) #
After his first six games in Vancouver, Conine was hitting .125/.222/.188. First the power came and then the plate control arrived.  Nick Podkul is putting up a Biggio-esque .267/.404/.511 with 10 walks and 9 strikeouts in 55 PAs.  Must be something they put it in the water at Notre Dame for their second basemen.
Shoeless Joe - Sunday, July 15 2018 @ 12:30 PM EDT (#361794) #
I can't even remember the last time the Jays drafted a legitimate prospect that projected as a pure power hitting right fielder?

Marcus Knect was maybe the last guy I got just a little bit excited for...briefly.

uglyone - Sunday, July 15 2018 @ 09:31 PM EDT (#361813) #
Bichette, doing good not great in AA, hits 2nd and goes 1 for 3.

Jansen, one of the best hitters in all AAA, for some reason hits down in the 7 hole....and goes 1 for 2 with an oppo 2run game tying HR.
Cynicalguy - Sunday, July 15 2018 @ 11:34 PM EDT (#361817) #
Not sure why teams don't do this with some of the two way prospects...especially the lower ranked prospects.

For sure Cynical, what is there to lose?  McGuire is a senior signing, 1000K bonus guy.  If he's up for the experiment, it's probably a fun thing for the team, and if he develops more as a pitcher, bonus.

Stole this question. I like it because it should yield zero arguments, since it's totally subjective.

Outside of Vlad, who are your 6 favourite Jays prospects? Not the best or most likely to succeed, just the 6 guys you like best.

Here's my 6:

Kevin Smith
Bo Bichette
Chavez Young
Eric Pardinho
Ryan Borucki
Danny Jansen

The question was supposed to be 5, but couldn't choose between Ryan/Danny.
Mike Green - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 12:03 PM EDT (#361829) #
The Bisons are 6.5 games out a wild card berth, and the other franchises are either leading (or in the case of Lansing, won the 1st half title) or are closer.  It's possible that every Blue Jay franchise makes the playoffs.
Mike Green - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 12:06 PM EDT (#361830) #
The GCL Blue Jays lineup 2-6 today goes Warmoth, Vladdy, Groshans, Moreno, Jimenez.
whiterasta80 - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 12:09 PM EDT (#361831) #
For me?

Bo Bichette
Dan Uggla, I mean Cavan Biggio
Jordan Groshans
Nate Pearson
Reese McGuire

Bonus: Jon Harris.

I had a soft spot for Chad Jenkins (has any former 1st rounder with a career ERA of 3.31 ever been given less rope?) and Deck McGuire so this is probably not surprising.

Yes I know what Jenkins' K% was, yes I know that he was likely to turn into a pumpkin at any minute.

Mike, those 5 prospects in the GCL today would represent a better top 5 than pretty much any Ricardi year.
bpoz - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#361835) #
I did not realize that Addisin Barger was 2 days younger than J Groshans. Both born in Nov 1999. Leo Jimenez born May 2001. All 3 play SS.

J Groshans is something special. High BA and 24 rbi. G Moreno is right with him. Bo had better numbers in 2016. I think Bo was also younger, but I am sure that Leo is younger. Lastly Bo is last in bb to Ks, but first in SBs.

We could be rich.

My favourite 5 right how are:

Samad Taylor
Otto Lopez
Bo Bichette
Danny Jansen
Mike Green - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 02:30 PM EDT (#361837) #
I don't really have 5 favourites- I'd find it easier to rank them in terms of quality.  Six I pay attention are: Gabriel Moreno, Davis Schneider, Eric Pardinho, Ryan Noda, Kevin Smith and Danny Janssen.
GabrielSyme - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 06:16 PM EDT (#361843) #
Hard to answer about favourite prospects, but here goes.

Danny Jansen, because I like to think I was on him early;
Jonathan Davis, I really hope he gets a chance;
Bo Bichette, I think it will be interesting to see how he handles this first spot of adversity;
Gabriel Moreno; the out-of-nowhere international signing is always fun; and a catcher!
Groshans, hoping that he can be a Bichette 2.0;
Reese McGuire - I love the idea of a quasi-platoon between Jansen and McGuire (presumably with McGuire being the backup and starting only against RHPs).
scottt - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 07:17 PM EDT (#361845) #
It's going to be interesting to see how Groshans pans out.
Especially when you consider that he was signed aggressively and under slot.
bpoz - Monday, July 16 2018 @ 08:07 PM EDT (#361846) #
scottt can you explain what you mean by aggressively. Pre-arranged deal? Picked 10 spots or so higher?

I liked that strategy. I actually was happiest with A Kloffenstein. I love the power pitchers. Some moving and shaking took place.
