Jordan Groshans has played eleven professional games. He has at least one hit in every one of them. Among the affiliates, Buffalo and New Hampshire did not get good starting pitching and lost. Dunedin scored three runs total and swept a doubleheader. Patrick Murphy pitched a complete game. Lansing and Bluefield lost. Vancouver and the GCL Jays won.

Buffalo

Nick Tepesch started and was hit around the park and out of it. In his 4.1 innings he gave up three home runs, two to Clint Frazier, and eleven hits in all. He was charged with seven runs. Tepesch started the year in AA where he pitched OK, but now he has a 6.26 ERA in AAA. The two new guys on the block followed. Zach Stewart 2.2 innings and conceded two runs. Brandon Cumpton pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

The Bisons lost 9-6. Danny Jansen got back in gear with two hits including his sixth home run, a two run shot. Richard Urena was 2-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Anthony Alford was 0-4 and cannot put together a consistent run of hits. Reece McGuire was 1-4 to keep his run going.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire were beat up, 13-3. Each team had three home runs, New Hampshire had three solo shots while Reading's three homers drove in ten. Connor Panas, Harold Ramirez and Cavan Biggio hit the home runs. For Biggio it was number 18, and badly needed as his offensive numbers have started to come down. Jon Berti had two hits. Bo Bichette picked up a double.

Taylor Saucedo made his first AA start and it was not a success. He went five innings but was charged with six runs. Nick Hartman and Kirby Snead gave up three runs each. Nash Knight was called on to pitch the ninth.

Dunedin

Dunedin played a doubleheader to make up for yesterdays rain-out. Both games were low scoring. In game one, Dunedin won 2-1. Patrick Murphy pitched a complete game, three hitter (7 inning). One of the hits was a home run. Murphy picked up six strikeouts. a two run home run by Kacy Clemens was the difference in the game. Clemens, who has been struggling, also had a double.

In game two, Dunedin scored a run in the top of the seventh to win 1-0. Yeltsin Gudino singled with one out and Josh Palacios walked. Santiago Espinal singled but Gudino was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Kevin Smith came through with an RBI single. Espinal and Ivan Castillo had two hits each. The Jays used three pitchers who held Fort Myers to just three hits. Connor Eller started and pitched four innings. Andy Ravel and Jake Fishman pitched three perfect innings to hang on for the offense to get going.

Lansing

Lansing lost 6-2. They were down 6-0 early. It was a bullpen game and Andrew Deramo started but gave up five runs in three innings. Three relievers gave up one hit but the Lugnuts walked 12 in the game.

Lansing did have ten hits, Brandon Grudzielanek, Norberto Obeso and Kevin Vicuna each had two hits. Obeso and Freddy Rodriguez each drove in a run.

Vancouver

The C's finally broke out the big bats and won 8-4. Jesus Severino is not known for his power but in the second inning he launched a grand slam to make it 4-0. Later in that same inning Yorman Rodriguez singled in a run and Griffin Conine doubled in two more and the C's were up 7-0. Tanner Kirwer doubled and scored the eighth run in the seventh inning. Kirwer, Conine and Rodriguez each had two hits.

Jordan Barrett started and went 5.2 innings. He was charged with all four Everett runs but on the bright side he had seven strikeouts. Three relievers brought the heat by recording strike outs on seven of the ten outs. Juan Nunez, Denis Diaz and Connor Law were the guys providing the top quality relief.

Bluefield

Bluefield went ahead 3-0 in the top of the first. Cal Stevenson singled, DJ Neal walked. A double steal brought in the first run, then Alejandro Kirk drove in number two. The third run scored on a sac fly from Patrick Morris. The big Bluefield offense were held to just six hits. Kirk had two of them.

Felipe Casteneda went three innings and gave up three runs. Joey Pulido followed and gave up two more. Jsoh Almonte is getting more work and pitched an inning without allowing a run to bring his ERA down to 8.10.

GCL Jays

The GCL Jays won 13-4. They were down 2-0 after three innings but they scored in each of the last five innings for the win. Hector Guerrero tripled in the first run and scored the second. Guerrero is a 20 year old Mexican infielder. He is now hitting .296. Jordan Groshans was 2-4 with four RBI. Groshans is hitting .400. He has played eleven games and has a hit in every game. Francisco Ruiz, an 18 year old catcher from Puerto Rico, drafted in the 38th round this year, was 2-3 with three RBI.

Rafael Monsion started and went five innings, allowing two runs. Three other relievers worked the game without doing anything notable.

DSL Jays

The DSL Jays lost 2-1 in a game where they had just three hits. Top DSL prospect Miguel Hiraldo did not play. Jhon Solarte was 0-4, his second hitless game in a row. Erickvi Celedonio went 1-4. Jose Zepeda. Zepeda was moved up to the second spot in the order but went 0-3. He did drive in the only run with a sac fly. The Jays used just two pitchers, starter Lazaro Estrada , a 19 year old Cuban, went six innings. He had six K's and now, on the season, has 34 in 26 innings.

Eric Pardinho has amazing stats. H, BB, Ks. Yet he was the loser in 2 or 3 Bluefield losses. Both by shutouts.

I posted this on twitter as well, this is BA on Alford this morning:

Would be one way to keep him healthy...

Truthfully I've always been high on Alford, but the K% worries me.

Fangraphs took a big hit when they lost Chris Mitchell and his KATOH milb statistical rankings to an MLB team this year.

But Jeff Zimmerman has brought his older, less sophisticated, statistical model out of storage and dusted it off:

The top 75 hitters is interesting.  Vlad is a 79 but #2 Fernando Tatis is only a 69 - massive spread as to shift to 59 you got to go to #6 Juan Soto, 49 is #18.  Bo is #3 barely behind Tatis with a 58.  Jansen is well back with a 50.

Amazing for the Jays to have 3 of the top 20 on any minor league listing imo.  Gives the team a LOT of hope going forward.

what can anyone tell me about Otto Lopez?
finch - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 12:25 PM EDT (#361443) #
I'm interested in Otto Lopez as well. I haven't seen him play yet this season in Vancouver but hope to make it out to Nat Bailey in the next couple of weeks; I'll provide an update then if someone doesn't do it before hand.

There isn't information on him. One scouting report have him a 73 rating for speed and 73 for hitting. Doesn't look like he has much power but can hit the balls in the gap. There's no found reports for his defense.

Interesting to watch Otto Lopez Mc Gregory Contreras, Jesus Severino and Griffin Conine this season as a C's fan.

Uglyone, From Jay Blue's prospect guide on Lopez.  BTW - I believe it's under $20 bucks for an annual subscription to the premium content section of "Blue Jays From Away" plus a download of the 2018 prospect guide, and I do recommend it to prospect geeks.

Lopez showed his versatility right from the beginning, earning his way into manager Luis Hurtado’s heart (Hurtado called him “one of my favourite players”). Lopez played second, third and shortstop on the infield while also getting into 15 games in the outfield with eight games in left field and seven in center. Hurtado, in an interview with Jesse Goldberg-Strassler at the end of the season, praised Hurtado’s ability to take pitches and his hustle.
I assume that second Hurtado should read Lopez.  6 games at 2B this year, 3 at SS, one in LF.

love the on-base skills so far.  I always worry when a young, athletic-seeming middle IF profiles more at 2nd than SS at such a young age, like I do with corner OF only types (DJ Davis, for example).  anyone with thoughts on this?  I think I've been lower than some on Samad Taylor for the same reasons.
dan gordon - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 02:36 PM EDT (#361454) #
In the oddball stats department, Jays' 10th round draft pick, CF Cal Stevenson, has 26 walks and only 6 strikeouts, between the GCL and Bluefield. Has an OBP of .551, and is 4 for 4 in stealing bases. He's old for rookie ball at 21.
jerjapan - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 03:51 PM EDT (#361476) #
Stevenson was a senior signing, no?  too me, he should be dominant at his age and level, but I do like him as far as senior signings go - known as a character guy, a bit of speed, good D in centre (this is all based on draft commentary).  The senior signing guys who have a chance are likely clear role-player types like Stevenson, who likely has a ceiling of 4th OF and a floor of 'released in A ball'.

So is Harold Ramirez kind of a prospect again?
Mike Green - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 07:35 PM EDT (#361503) #
Ramirez isn't a prospect right now, but if he keeps hitting like he has for the last 6 weeks, then yes.  Since the beginning of June, he has 8 doubles and 5 homers in 126 PAs to go along with a .331 average.  If he keeps up that pace for the remainder of the year, then you have something.  The odds are against that, but youneverknow.

Yennsy Diaz had another good outing for Dunedin today, going 6 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits and no walks, while striking out 4.  He's now thrown 44 innings in Dunedin with a 3.27 ERA, 1 HR allowed, 13 walks and 40 strikeouts.  He's only 21.
jerjapan - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 08:05 PM EDT (#361505) #
Ramirez is a soon-to-be 24 year old, one tool LF, in AA.

The AA thing isn't his fault - he's already earned a promotion this year, and the FO isn't really maximizing opportunities for fringey prospects right now.  But his slash line isn't much better than it was in AA in 2016 when we got him from the Pirates.  He's got a ceiling of Melky Cabrerra, and a floor of 'guy who wishes he was Dwight Smith'.  In my books, he's got to keep this pace up for the rest of his career to be a prospect worthy of graduating from the Buffalo shuttle.  I could see him having a year or two like Smith has had the past few years, if that means anything ... I'd put him in the 50-60 range in the org prospect depth chart?

I like Yennsy Diaz a lot, and have less of a problem with the slow developmental path the FO is taking when it comes to someone who could legit start in the bigs if everything goes right.
Gerry - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 09:46 PM EDT (#361507) #
The AAA and AA all-star breaks start now. Usually they coincide with the major league break but not this year.

Danny Jansen has a busy week ahead of him. He will play in the AAA all-star game on Wednesday and then in the futures game on Sunday.

Shout out to Brock Lundquist who had two hits in each side of the doubleheader today. He is hitting .615 in a small sample. The bad news is that this performance is inconsistent with his Lansing results but there is hope.
scottt - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 11:22 PM EDT (#361510) #
Busy for a break and probably a great experience for him, but  I'm curious to see how many innings he'll play.
scottt - Sunday, July 08 2018 @ 11:29 PM EDT (#361511) #
Ramirez was a contact hitter with speed a bit above average. Now the speed is probably below average and he's trying to hit with more power to compensate. Defensively, hes pretty much limited to left field.
We would need to see what he does in Buffalo, once a spot opens somewhere.

scottt - Monday, July 09 2018 @ 07:30 AM EDT (#361516) #
The Orioles will pick first or second next year and probably dwell in the basement until all their bad contracts expire.
Then they'll probably reload on free agents and attempt another run. It's all dependent on making some key trades like the Erik Bedard move.

My bet is that the Jays package Pompey in a deadline deal if he can stay healthy between now and then (a big if)... He has value to a contender as a defensive replacement and pinch runner... He's been passed on the depth chart and is out of options at the end of this year.
Mike Green - Monday, July 09 2018 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#361536) #
Who do you think Pompey has been passed by?  Teoscar and Grichuk, obviously.  But after that, Alford has taken a step backwards and the rest of the outfield talent is at least a couple of years away unless they move Bichette or somebody else out.
