Not too much excitement on the farm last night.

Buffalo Bisons

The symptoms that have beset the big club this year showed up last night for our AAA affiliate. Buffalo was 0-7 with runners in scoring position, four times with two-outs, and left five on base. Rowdy Tellez is sliding closer-and-closer to the Mendoza line. The Bisons lost.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

This game was played in five innings due to rain. Derrick Loveless had just one at-bat in the nine hole. Richard Urena and Ryan McBroom both doubled. The Fisher Cats lost.

Dunedin Blue Jays

Josh DeGraaf pitched a solid game. His abbreviated line reads as follows: Six innings, six hits, one earned run, two walks, and three strikeouts. The bats were quiet. The Blue Jays squeaked out a win 2-1.

Lansing Lugnuts

Rodrigo Orozco had three hits in the leadoff spot and Yennsy Diaz pitched six shutout innings to pace the Lugnuts to a narrow 3-2 win.

Vancouver Canadians

Matt Morgan had a nice day. He homered, doubled, and threw out two runners. Kevin Vicuna had three hits. Jose Espada started and pitched just two shutout innings before leaving the game. Espada had only thrown 17 pitches at that point.

Bluefield Blue Jays

Not too many bright spots here as Bluefield was blown out. Tanner Kirwer doubled and homered.

GCL Blue Jays

Two 19-year olds had good days at the plate. Luis De Los Santos had four hits while Joseph Reyes had two hits and three RBIs. The Blue Jays lost.

DSL Blue Jays

The DSL squad won last night to push their record to 28-12.

That's the start we've all been waiting for, nice.

I do hope we move some of our big league OF, in part to open up space for guys like Fields and Smith to get some run.  Fringey prospects who need to be protected or not on the 40 man this offseason, and they are playing well.  We could use some youth and athleticism right now.

Andrew Guillotte, also in Buffalo now, is starting to remind me of Kevin Pillar.  Both 32nd round overachievers, although Guillotte still has a ways to go before catching up with Pillar.  Pillar hit over .300 at 7 out of 8 major stops on the minor league ladder, and .299 in Buffalo.

SRF struggled mightily with his control for the first 6 weeks of the season, but has been a lot better since.  He is not yet 22, and is a fine pitching prospect.  He needs more time obviously but the markers are good.

I think that Guillotte will be Jays utility guy in 2019, possible sometime in 2018 if the opportunity presents itself though I think spending all of 2018 in the minors would serve him well. He does not need to be added to 40 man till next year's off season.

Pillar's career minor league line: .324/.367/.479/.846
Guillotte's career minor league line: .260/.338/.359/.697

Guillotte has had a pretty good 2017 season, but he's a long way from Pillar as a hitter in the minors. He is a bit younger than Kevin was, so perhaps there is room to grow, but on the other hand, his 2017 season may be an aberration.

Chris Rowley threw seven shutout innings tonight, five hits, one walk, three K's. He had 9 ground ball outs and three fly balls. His ERA in AAA is now 2.27.

Any Vancouver fans have any reports on Logan Warmouth's defence thus far?

We will need to have a look at Rowley at the major league level soon, perhaps by September or sooner if pitchers are traded. I would like to get a September look at Roemon Fields as well. It should be no problem adding him to 40 man as there are there should be no problem finding a candidate to be DFA.

I agree Peter G that we should try to see a few of the kids this year. See what we have.

I counted about 12 spots on the 40 man that can be vacated. There will be a few FAs leaving. We don't need all 3 current catchers. One of Maile or Montero can be taken off in the off season. But then I would add D Jansen. I don't want to risk losing him in the Rule 5. But then I don't know if he would be picked. That leaves Pentecost and R McGuire unprotected. You can lose a max of 3 players in the Rule 5 draft, I believe.

C Coghlan is probably a FA at the end of the year, if not, will the FO want to keep him for next year. D Pompey can be kept kept on the DL or rehabbed to avoid using up his last option. After that bring him up and let him play a little. D Smith & A Alford can come up anytime as they have burned this years options.

I have no idea as to what the plans are for H Ramirez. But I doubt the FO would want H Ramirez, A Alford, D Smith, D Pompey and D Ceciliani on the team together. None have much ML experience.

So some 40 man spots should be available.

Some ML playing time should help in prospect development. I would like to see D Jansen, C Greene and R Borucki promoted in Sept for the ML experience. Borucki is already on the 40 man roster. I expect Greene and Jansen to be added and also Tellez.

SRF, Connor, Rios, Borucki and Harris comprise a nice group of arms maturing in the high minors next year. I know many have condemned most of them to the bullpen, but I still think that if control/command improve for SRF and Connor, they can be starters at the next level.

We have Zeuch and Maese coming a level behind them too (if they can get healthy).

I wonder if Osuna can be convinced to try starting for the rest of the year, if for no other reason than to give Sanchez some respite in the bullpen for the rest of the season (there are other reasons).

twitter says pearson hit triple digits thrice. nice to see that in real game action.

Agreed ayjackson. They are not stagnating in their development. I also choose to be positive.

Add Perdomo, who is more consistently good than bad IMO. Again positive thinking.
