Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette have been promoted to High A.

Buffalo Bisons

Cesar Valdez pitched seven shut-out innings, but all was for not as the bullpen was unable to hang on two separate occasions. J.P. Howell pitched a shutout inning. The Bisons lost 4-3 in eleven innings.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

Another come from behind lost. The Boston affiliate scored four runs in the ninth by way of a walk-off grand-slam. Tim Lopes had four hits and Conner Greene pitched seven innings of three-run baseball. None of Greene’s outs were recorded by fly-ball—all ground balls and strikeouts.

Dunedin Blue Jays

Angel Perdomo had a rough one. He pitched just two innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on three walks and three strikeouts. Dunedin as noted yesterday will be getting reinforcements soon as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette will be joining the High-A squad shortly.

Lansing Lugnuts

In the aforementioned Guerrero Jr. and Bichette’s last game in Lansing, Guerrero Jr. homered and Bichette singled and walked twice. They will both be heading to the Futures Game as part of the All-Star festivities. Do the Jays promote Kevin Vicuna? Little surprised Logan Warmoth has started in the GCL.

Vancouver Canadians

Wilfri Aleton pitched five shutout innings out of the pen for the Canadians

Bluefield Blue Jays

Ryan Noda is off to a heck of a start. He had three hits including two doubles last night. He’s hitting at an even .500 clip. Maximo Castillo pitched five innings of one run baseball.

GCL Blue Jays

Logan Warmoth was held hitless in five trips. He kicked a ball as well in the field. Not a great start for the first rounder, but well too early for any judgment.

DSL Blue Jays

Naswell Paulino struck out nine in four and two-thirds. Very nice.

Three Stars

3. Tim Lopes

2. Ryan Noda

1. Cesar Valdez

BA Midseason Prospect Rankings:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2017-midseason-top-100-prospects-july-7/#oEcHIy32MzlcqX0t.97

Vlady #2
Alford #38
Bichette #44

High praise for Vlady, but at this point there is no way Alford is a better prospect than BIchette.

Vlad is more or less on a known trajectory.

Bo - not so much. As he gets higher we'll see just how problematic his unorthodox swing is. Either he'll be starting a new trend or doing a serious rework.

Personally, I think it's time for a "new trend" to excite baseball!

Kyle Weatherly appears to be on his way to Lansing according to Steve Ewen from The Vancouver Province.

David Jacob homered in his first at-bat today for the GCL Jays. Taylor Cole started and pitched one inning. The game was suspended after one inning because of rain.

Good to hear about Jacob Gerry.  He had a great year with the bat last year - we seem to have a few sleeper 1B guys in the system with Noda, Jacob and Bradley Jones, although he's been utterly dreadful since getting promoted.

I've been able to confirm the Jays did not sign any picks at the deadline... Patrick Morris was the last player signed. No Kobie Russell, no Cordell Dunn, at.

Jairo Labourt, the less-heralded third prospect sent by the Jays to the Tigers in the David Price trade, is having a pretty good season in A+ and AA as a power reliever. The strikeouts are up, the walks are way down, and he was recently named to the Futures Game World roster. I remember him being mentioned as a sleeper (big arm with control issues) when he was in the Jays system. I guess he's no longer a sleeper.

Laibourt is still the hardest thrower I've ever seen in Vancouver. He's the only pitcher who ever sat 95- 96. Other guys could throw the occasional pitch higher but Laibourt is the only guy whose average FB velocity was that high. And it's an easy 96. It looks effortless.

J Labourt is a lefty too.

Nasty compound fractures in leg of 2B prospect Sterling Guzman last night during collision with Tanner Kirwer, who finished the game for Bluefield.

David Jacob in Buffalo now. 0-4 today.

David Jacob - low A to Buffalo.  Why?

Young OF Edward Olivares is really putting a nice season together in Lansing after a poor 2015 and an injury-riddled 2016.  slashing .284/.326/.536 with 14 HRs and 16 SBs, he's only recently turned 21 and he's played almost as much CF a RF.  Lots to like, although his BB% is worryingly low this season.

Bad news for Guzman, sorry to hear.

I think Olivares is a great prospect. He looked good in ST as well. He is not just all offence either. He has a cannon for an arm, probably the best in the organization. Maybe now that Vlad and Bo have been promoted, he will get more notice in Lansing.
Marc Hulet - Sunday, July 09 2017 @ 08:20 PM EDT (#345091) #
Jacob's assignment is just temporary... he'll move down, probably to Vancouver or Lansing early this week.
Gerry - Sunday, July 09 2017 @ 08:55 PM EDT (#345092) #
This year the Jays have sent players from much lower levels up to plug gaps. Earlier they sent Kevin Vicuna from extended spring to Dunedin. They have Luis De Los Santos playing short in Lansing. Several Relievers and catchers have similarly been bumped temporarily. For example Yonardo Herdenez has gone from Bluefield to Lansing to New Hampshire over the last three weeks.

That's a shame about Guzman. He was off to a good start at BLuefield. Gets on base, has some pop and speed. Was playing more 2B than 3B this this year - perhaps his relative unfamiliarity with the position was a factor in the injury.

Yes, Olivares is having an excellent season. I've moved him up my prospect list a couple of times this year. He has 43 extra base hits in 321 AB's, plus 16 SB vs 5 CS. Has led to him scoring 62 runs despite not walking much.

Now that the draft signing period is well over I checked https://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2017/6/15/15807240/2017-mlb-draft-signing-table to see who signed and did not sign.

The first 17 picks signed, the 17th round pick was expected to sign but no proof one way or the other, the 18th round guy signed too leaving round 19 as the first for sure not signed which is very good. 7 guys from round 19 to the end were ranked and just 1 signed. Just 9 or 10 didn't sign in the end which I think is excellent. The Jays left just $50 unspent from the cap. Hopefully they picked well as they got the most vital ones signed.

I've been reading the reports on Bichette's unorthodox swing as well Mylegacy. I'm not a scout, so I don't really know what to look for, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I've never seen a kid at this level more consistently barrel a ball and drive it into the gap as he has. For right now, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If his swing is unorthodox but works for him, you just leave the kid alone. There is no reason to retool anything at this point.

The only thing that I have seen Bichette struggle with is barreling the ball up on hard throwers. Beau Burrows, who was also in the Futures game yesterday kind of owned him. Burrows threw a couple at 98 on the black and it was in the catchers mitt before he got the bat around, but Burrows pretty much dominated the inning he threw in the Futures Game yesterday as well.

It was not Burrows that got Bichette. My mistake on that one.
