Dunedin 8 Tampa 4 - 15 innings
The Jays had a 3-2 lead for much of this game, from the second inning to the eighth. The Yankees tied it in the bottom of the eighth with a two out double but the Jays fought back to take the lead again in the ninth. A costly error from Ryan McBroom opened the door for the Yankees to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. That was it for scoring until the fifteenth.
The first three Jays hitters of the game reached base. Anthony Alford walked, John La Prise was hit by a pitch and Jonathan Davis loaded the bases with a bunt single. With no outs the Jays were only able to score one run on a sac fly by Max Pentecost. The Jays made it 3-0 in the second. Jorge Flores singled, Alford hit a ground rule double and La Prise brought both home with another double.
Jon Harris was the starter and went 6.1 innings. His only blemish was a two run home run allowed in the second inning. Harris gave up five hits, walked one and added five strikeouts. Tim Mayza let the Yankees tie it up off a single and a two out double in the eighth. The Jays re-took the lead in the ninth with doubles by Alford and Davis.
Carlos Ramirez was the closer on Wednesday. He struck out the first hitter but then came the McBroom error. Ramirez then compounded the error with two walks to load the bases. A ground ball to third gave the Jays the chance to turn a double play to end the game. The umpire at first said no to the DP, the Jays thought he was wrong, but the tying run came across to score.
Jose Fernandez was excellent out of the bullpen, he pitched 3.1 innings, from the tenth into the 14th. Francisco Rios followed Fernandez and he finished up the last 2.2 innings.
In the fifteenth the Jays scored four runs with only one hit. A sequence of errors by the Yankees might have been evidence of tiredness. DJ Davis started the inning by reaching on a strikeout. A walk followed, then an error on a pickoff and a wild pitch gave the Jays a lead. A single by La Prise was the only hit of the inning. Three walks and an error gave the Jays three more runs.
Jonathan Davis had five hits. La Prise had three hits and three RBI. Alford two hits and scored three runs.
