A quick, nasty investigation of a fairly minor issue.

We've seen a few comments noting Roberto Osuna's tendency to pitch worse when there isn't a save on the line.  Why would this happen? Is the adrenalin not flowing? Is he taking the opportunity to try out a few things? And, perhaps more to the point, does this really happen?

In a word, yes. Here are your AL closers, ranked in order of how much their ERA increases when he's not pitching in a save situation.

OK, why is Ryan Madson working in save situations at all? I don't like my chances of squeezing the whole data table into place, but here goes....

When a homer is no worse than a walk, the optimal pitching strategy is meatier than usual, and the hitters know it...

It looks as if Kimbrel and Robertson use the occasion to work on pitches they don't have particularly good command of - the BBs go through the roof. While Osuna and Herrera just throw everyone fastballs down the middle, and say "Here it is."

It is really odd that the walk rates are much lower for some of the pitchers in the save situations. Although "tie game, bottom of the ninth" is a non-save situation, correct? Like when Boston brought in Kimbrel in yesterday... and in that situation the looming threat of a walk sometimes becomes a useful weapon for the pitcher.

Strikeouts and walks are such a blunt instrument. It would be interesting to see how often the pitchers get ahead in the count.

I never quite bought the adrenaline thing since it doesn't make much sense to me that there would be a big difference in adrenaline between protecting a 3-run lead to start the 9th vs. a 4-run lead. 1-run lead vs a 9-run lead, sure.

There does seem to be a difference in psychology though, when the pitcher doesn't have a "save" on the line, and just sort of slings fastballs over the middle.

It would be interesting to look at this over more years, broken down by size of lead, and looking at pitch f/x data.

Not that this isn't interesting though Magpie! Thanks for the work.

I was under the impression that Osuna gave hits on his offspeed pitches and has been throwing fastballs at 98mph in his saves since the last time he blew one.

Sam Dyson is the T Rangers closer. So someone had to fail as closer for this to happen. Ok, I know who. Shawn Tolleson.

Bull Pens!!!! Frustrating!!!! S Tolleson claimed on waivers from LAD. S Dyson also a waiver acquisition.

just briefly looked at his most recent pitch mixes, scottt, and i was surprised to see that you are right - osuna got burned by throwing his offspeed stuff more. i thought differently.

Osuna does generally seem to get burned more often on his off speed pitches, but I don't know if that differs between save and non save. Remember his most recent blown save was a change up that got hit into the seats.

I think one thing led to the other.

Bautista took a bad hack at the 2-2 in the second inning to fly out weakly.  Unfortunately, a poor approach has been common to quite a few of the players.
