That's quite a season that 18th rounder Bradley Jones has put together. In just 61 games at Bluefield, he's now got 16 HR's and 16 SB's. Prorate to a full season and you'd have a 40/40 guy. Batting average of .291, OPS of .914. Be nice to see him start next season in Lansing.

Agreed Dan, it's been a while since we had someone flash so much power so quickly after being drafted, even if he is slightly old for the league.  Lansing would be a good test for him.  Certainly a great start for someone signed without much pedigree, even if he does seem to be more likely to end up at 1b than 3b.

Any other sleeper prospects you've been following this year?

The great Vito Chiaravalloti was even more impressive in 2003, beating up on younger talent with such ferocity that it sent posters into euphoria that the new Ricciardi regime had struck gold.

good memory 85, but this is hardly 'euphoria' we are displaying here.  It's a given that most guys like Jones don't pan out.  But we've got Pillar (32nd round pick) and Biagini (26th) making significant contributions right now for the team, with call-ups like Barnes (35th), Dermody (28th) and Tepera (19th - one spot behind Jones) who might make it as big leaguers.

It's a SSS for sure, but that does mean it counts for nothing.

Yes, I remember Vito. Had 1 great short season when he was 22 going on 23 in the NYPL. Hit .350 with a bunch of HR's, and didn't do much after that. Sure, Jones is not likely to make it, but he did have a very good season, and I feel it puts him on the list of guys who just might have a shot. As the saying goes, you throw enough stuff at the wall, some of it's going to stick. Jerjapan, I also liked the first season of catcher Ryan Gold, picked in the 27th round this year.

Many disappointed me Vito and Chip Cannon to name 2. They sure raised my hopes. But they had weaknesses. Being old for the level is a major factor.

Basically I expect to be disappointed but I like the dreaming and salivating.

Rowdy Tellez is my current great hope.

Tellez with another home run tonight.

Max Pentecost is catching tonight for Dunedin.  I believe it's the first time, unless I missed something.

Pentecost caught the whole 11 innings, hit a HR, and caught 1 of 3 attempted base stealers. Tellez is improving at a very rapid pace. His OPS by month this season: Apr .706, May .855, June .920, July .950, Aug 1.046, Sept (3 games) 1.417. I think he's going to be making a significant contribution at the big league level before the end of next season.

Man it's hard to rememeber now but Tellez had a truly awful start this year. 27gms into the year he had a .574ops and a 67wrc+. In the 95gms since, he's had a 1.019ops and a 180wrc+.

he probably should have been promoted at some point.

Turns out that Gameday was incorrect:  Pentecost was at DH, not Catcher.  He hasn't played at C this season.  This was confirmed by the farm report at the bottom of this Sportsnet report:  http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-notebook-liriano-still-adjusting-bullpen-role/

All the comments from both him and management have been a bit depressing imo. It doesn't really sound like they have a whole lotta faith in him catching again.
jerjapan - Sunday, September 04 2016 @ 02:46 PM EDT (#330658) #
Ugly, do you have any links for that?  My sense was that Pentacost was never going to catch this year and the org still has hope that he can catch next year.

Congrats to 29 year old Murphy Smith getting promoted to AAA for the first time.  This was his first season since being drafted in 2009 where he was a full-time reliever and the role has really agreed with him. He joins Chris Smith and Will Browning as the longshot relievers in the Buffalo pen who just might get a shot as a result of dogged perseverance.

they definitely haven't given up on it and i'm sure he'll try but they don't exactly sound confident that he can do it. the last article was a Laurila profile on fangraphs.

Murphy Smith produced mediocre numbers as a starter for a long time before his excellent year as a reliever this season. Browning is an interesting case. He's got that unusual sidearm type of delivery, and has had great success throughout his minor league career. He's pitched 241 innings over 5 seasons, allowing only 167 hits for an opponents' BA against of only .191. He's struck out 298 compared to only 74 walks, and has a career ERA under 2.00. Given the free agents in the Blue Jays bullpen, and the possibility of Biagini being a starter, I think Browning has a chance to be with the big league club next year. If the Blue Jays feel the same way, they need to add him to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
