The affiliates had a 3-5 record on Tuesday with a walk-off loss and an extra-innings setback tipping the scales the wrong way.

Gwinnett 8 Buffalo 4

Lawrenceville, GA
- Mike Bolsinger (1-3, 8.22) was bombed by the Braves for seven runs (six earned) on six hits, including a three-run bomb by former Jay Emilio Bonifacio and a two-run shot by Mel Rojas Jr., over 2-2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Jason Berken stranded two Bolsinger runners and pitched 3-1/3 innings of one-run ball on four hits with one strikeout. Matt Dermody pitched a clean seventh and Dustin Antolin worked a one-hit eighth with two punchouts.

The Bisons were up 2-0 after the top of the first. Dalton Pompey began the proceedings with a walk and Darrell Ceciliani followed with a single. They pulled off a double steal before scoring on a Jesus Montero double. Casey Kotchman homered in the fourth for a solo shot. Andy Burns singled home a Ceciliani walk in the seventh. Montero had two hits and two walks and Ceciliani had two and one as well as a stolen base. Erik Kratz and Alexi Casilla had a single and a walk. Kotchman was hit by pitch to reach twice while Pompey had two walks. Matt Dominguez and Domonic Brown also had base hits.

Portland 8 New Hampshire 2

Portland, ME
- Jeremy Gabryszwski (7-11, 5.27) was beaten like a drum as the Red Sox affiliate rocked him for seven runs (six earned) on eight hits (including a three-run home run by Yoan Moncada) and two walks. He struck out three and split his six outs in play evenly on the ground and in the air. Alonzo Gonzalez prevented Gabby's line from getting worse by stranding two runners but gave up a run on two hits and two walks over 2-1/3 innings. Wil Browning struck out four and allowed just one hit over two scoreless frames. Colton Turner walked two but whiffed two in a shutout eighth.

Like the Bisons, the Fisher Cats had a 2-0 lead after their first at-bat. Unlike the Herd, that was all New Hampshire could muster. Christian Lopes began the game with a leadoff walk and was doubled home by Rowdy Tellez. Ryan Lavarnway also doubled to bring Tellez home. Tellez, Emilio Guerrero and Jon Berti all had a hit and a walk apiece with Guerrero getting a double. Jason Leblebijian walked twice and Derrick Loveless heard ball four once. Richard Urena was 1-for-5 but Dwight Smith Jr. was 0-for-4.

Dunedin 8 Tampa 3

Tampa, FL
- The Jays upended the Yankees by scoring three times in the fourth to snap a 1-1 tie. David Harris singled home two runs to put the Jays ahead for good before eventually crossing the plate on a passed ball. Dunedin scored a run in the first on a Max Pentecost fielder's choice grounder to cash in a leadoff single from Anthony Alford and Pentecost brought home Alford again on a base hit after Alford reached on a strikeout/wild pitch in the seventh. Dickie Joe Thon homered in the ninth and Ryan McBroom connected for his 20th to score a Pentecost double. Thon, Pentecost and Harris shared the hit lead with two. McBroom was the on-base leader by adding a couple of walks to his dinger and he stole a base. Jonathan Davis walked twice and stole his 29th base. Matt Dean walked and also pilfered a bag. Alford singled and swiped one but had the golden sombrero. Danny Jansen was hitless in four at-bats.

Luis Santos (3-1, 4.03) surrendered just one unearned run on one hit and three walks over eight innings. He struck out three, had nine groundball outs and sat down 15 in a row for a Game Score of 80. The Yanks did get to Adonys Cardona for a two-run homer and a walk in the ninth.

Dayton 5 Lansing 3

Dayton, OH
- The Lugnuts saw their record drop to .500 after another loss to the Reds affiliate. Justin Maese (1-3, 2.62) took the loss despite one run allowed over five innings. He gave up five hits, three walks and hit a batter but whiffed four with all of his seven outs in play on the ground. Kirby Snead was smacked around for four runs on five hits and a walk in the sixth. Daniel Young walked one over two shutout frames.

The Lugnuts tried to rally in the last two innings as Andrew Guillotte lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth before RBI singles by Juan Tejada and Connor Panas in the ninth. Lane Thomas and Justin Atkinson had a couple of hits. John La Prise doubled and walked. Ryan Metzler drew a walk but Ryan Hissey was 0-for-4.

Boise 3 Vancouver 2 (10 Innings)

Geno Encina
struck out six in relief for Vancouver Tuesday night.

Vancouver, BC
- The C's pitched well enough but did not hit enough or defend well enough against the Rockies affiliate. Jackson McClelland (1-4) suffered the hard-luck loss as he gave up a two-strike single to start the 10th. That runner was bunted over to second and McClelland intentionally walked the next batter. The Hawks then pulled off a double steal and a throwing error by Javier Hernandez behind the plate on the play allowed the winning run to score. McClelland finished up by striking out the last two batters. Boise was six of seven in the stolen base department.

T.J. Zeuch
made his first start in nearly two weeks and showed some rust early on with a leadoff single and a walk. The Hawks stole a pair of bases but Hernandez did nail a runner at third to help keep the game scoreless. The Hawks got to Zeuch for a pair of runs in the third. A single, a stolen base and an infield single and error by Bryan Lizardo at third produced the first Boise run one pitch after Zeuch did not get a called strike three on an 84 MPH pitch that would have ended the inning. He was then torched for a run-scoring triple. The 2016 first-round pick settled down by retiring the last seven hitters he faced. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk and struck out five over five frames. Seven of his nine outs in play were handled by the infield. Geno Encina was outstanding in his four-inning stint, limiting the Hawks to three hits and a walk while ringing up six batters. Four of his six outs in play were on the grass.

Yeltsin Gudino had a three-hit night for the C's Tuesday night.

The C's got the game's first run in the second when Christian Williams walked and came in to score on a bases-loaded base on balls by D.J. McKnight. Lizardo atoned for his error with a leadoff double in the third and he came home on a Nash Knight single. Vancouver had chances to reward Zeuch or Encina with a victory. Cavan Biggio singled and Lizardo walked to start the fifth but J.B. Woodman flied out and Williams hit into a double play. In the sixth, Knight, Jacob Anderson and Yeltsin Gudino all singled with Gudino's being of the bunt variety but McKnight popped up and Hernandez hit into a double play. The C's also had a shot in the ninth when Gudino reached on an infield single and was moved up to second on a McKnight bunt. However, Hernandez and Biggio struck out to send the game into overtime. Gudino had three hits and Knight had two knocks and a walk. Biggio and Lizardo had a hit and a free pass. Woodman was 0-for-5 and Hernandez was 0-for-4.

Danville 6 Bluefield 5 (11 Innings)

Danville, VA
- The Bluef-Jays battled back from 3-0 and 5-2 deficits only to be walked off by the Braves in extras in a morning/afternoon affair. Connor Eller (1-1) permitted just one hit and struck out three in his first two innings of relief but a double, a fielder's choice in which Eller tried to get the runner at third, an intentional walk and a wild pitch gave the Braves the win. Juliandry Higuera got through five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks while compiling strikeout and groundout totals of five. Chris Hall was cuffed for two runs on three hits and a walk over three frames.

The Bluefield bats finally got going in the sixth when Bradley Jones walked and scampered home on a Cam O'Brien double. Juandy Mendoza would follow with an RBI single. Bradley Jones would send the game into overtime with his 12th homer of the year, a three-run shot that plated walks by Earl Burl III and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bradley Jones went 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base while Lance Jones had a hit and two free passes. Jesus Severino had the other two-hit game for Bluefield. Guerrero and O'Brien had a hit and a walk apiece. Ridge Smith was 0-for-2 with a walk after pinch-hitting for Matt Morgan while Burl was also 0-for-2 with a ball four after replacing Nick Sinay in the batter's box. Reggie Pruitt was 0-for-6.

GCL Blue Jays 5 GCL Braves 2

Kissimmee, FL
- The Jays won their 37th game in 50 tries by using a four-run second inning to beat the Braves. Miguel Almonte opened the scoring with an RBI double before Chavez Young delivered a two-run triple. Young would cross home plate on a sacrifice fly by Norberto Obeso. Sterling Guzman went yard by popping one over the left field fence for the final run in the fifth. Young had a three-hit afternoon and a stolen base while Owen Spiwak contributed a single and two walks. David Jacob had a knock and a walk. Antony Fuentes singled and stole a base and Kevin Vicuna added a base hit. Yorman Rodriguez took one for the team not once but twice.

Yonardo Herdenez allowed just a hit and a walk but did not qualify for the win as he lasted just four innings. He struck out two and added four groundball outs. Juan Meza (1-1) worked a one-hit fifth and struck out one for the win. Ty Sterner whiffed one and worked around a pair of hits over two scoreless frames. William Ouelette coughed up the shutout with a couple of runs in his two frames. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out one. One of the two runs was unearned on his own throwing error.

DSL Blue Jays 4 DSL Reds 3

Boca Chica, DR
- Both teams did all their scoring in the second and sixth innings with the Blue Jays getting one more than the Reds in the second. A two-run double by Yeison Estevez and an RBI single by Anderson Green erased a 2-0 deficit in the second. McGregory Contreras knocked home an Aldo Ovando double in the sixth with a base hit to take the lead for good. Contreras was 3-for-3 and Antonio Concepion singled and walked twice. Ovando and Estevez had two hits apiece. Yhordegny Kelly also had a base knock.

Emmanuel Reyes
lasted five innings and surrendered a couple of runs (one earned but after his own throwing miscue) on five hits and a walk. His K and GO totals were four apiece. Juan Bautista (1-1) was charged with the blown save but got the win after giving up a run on four hits and a walk over three frames, striking out two. Oscar Brito got the final two outs, stranding two runners with a strikeout and a game-ending groundout for his second save.

Thanks JB#2!  FYI, there are a few write-ups posted twice in there.

Bolsinger has been a huge bust in his first four starts ... with no options next year, hard to see his role with the team.

Maese is a super-exciting prospect, but I worry about his lack of Ks.

PeterG was talking about Chavez Young yesterday and the kid does indeed look good.  Forget about his being picked in the 39th round - his signing bonus was 200K.  Jim Callis had him with a 60 arm and 65 run.

Bradley Jones and McGregory Contreras also having great starts to their careers.

Maese looks better at 19 than either Green or SRF did. He's pretty good.

would not worry too much about the lack of high K totals with Maese. He is a groundball pitcher by design and not afraid of contact. Here is a link to a recent article about him:

Mike's guy Lane Thomas is having a weird but definitely interesting year.

The contact numbers are real bad (low avg and high Ks), but enough patience and power to sport a well above average line at an appropriate age for Lansing (after demolishing Bluefield in a short stint).

Any word on his defense?

Fixed. Apologies for all the spelling errors, missing words and duplicate text in this update. That was a 20 update on the scouting scale. E - #2JBrumfield (too many to count) for the box score.

I forgot to link this earlier but MiLB.com has a good story on Conner Greene's start in Portland Monday.

Maese had 10 swing-and-misses yesterday, fwiw.

Good to know PeterG.  There seems to be a maturity and intelligence to the kid that comes out nicely in the article you linked to, and is reflected in that approach to pitching.

Sanchez didn't rack up Ks in the minors too. Sickels likened Maese to both young Syndergaard and Sanchez.
scottt - Friday, August 26 2016 @ 08:03 AM EDT (#329771) #
I don't think they're alike at all.

Syndergaard and Sanchez are guys who dominate with 96-99 mph stuff.
There's a lot of sinker/slider guys in the minors. Very few have prolonged success in the majors.
Neither Syndergaard nor Sanchez use the slider much.

I understand not needing to strike out hitters to have success, but in The Show, you'll get into jams and the ability to strike out a hitter when you need it makes a huge difference.

Maese looks like the type of pitcher that needs great command to succeed with the stuff he has and he seems to have that, but that is very unlike Sanchez.

uglyone - Friday, August 26 2016 @ 10:25 AM EDT (#329782) #
yeah i agree scott. but maese does have an edge on them in that he already seems to have 2 defined quality offspeed pitches with a slider and a change. He doesn2 have near the velo but apparently his fastball is a a good bowling ball sinker.

i'm actually drawing a blank on recent jays prospects as good comps for him. can't really think of any.
