The North American affiliates were 4-0 and the Dominican Jays were winning before the rains came. The Lansing Lugnuts, saved for five of them, had the night off. The fab five all put in a good showing at the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Buffalo 6 Louisville 3

Buffalo, NY
- The long ball was the weapon of choice for the Bisons to club the Bats. Matt Dominguez hit a grand slam in the third inning and David Adams went deep for a two-run shot in the fourth to double up the Reds affiliate. Dominguez and Adams both had a pair of hits and a walk. Alexi Casilla singled and walked, Jesus Montero had a base hit and Junior Lake walked twice. Andy Burns was 0-for-5 in the leadoff spot and A.J. Jimenez was 0-for-4.

John Anderson (1-1, 6.00) got through five innings to get the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with a K-BB total of 2-2. All seven outs of his in play were handled by the infield. The bullpen shut down Louisville with four scoreless frames.  Ben Rowen walked two but struck one in the sixth, Aaron Loup whiffed one in the seventh, Bo Schultz worked a one-hit eighth and Ryan Tepera notched save number 10 with a strikeout in a spotless ninth.

New Hampshire 5 Erie 4

Erie, PA
- A pair of two-RBI efforts helped the Fisher Cats beat the Tigers affiliate. A Ryan Lavarnway sacrifice fly and a Matt Dean single lifted New Hampshire to a 2-0 first inning lead. Dean doubled home another run in the third and Lavarnway knocked in what turned out to be the winning run with an RBI single in the seventh. A Roemon Fields fielder's choice brought home the other run in the fourth. Christian Lopes had a 4-for-4 day at the plate with two doubles and Dean had a three-hit evening. Dwight Smith Jr. was 2-for-2 with two walks and Jason Leblebijian had a couple hits and a stolen base. Rowdy Tellez doubled once in two at-bats before being replaced by Shane Opitz at first. Opitz had a single and a walk. Fields walked once but was caught stealing. Jorge Flores was 0-for-2 and Derrick Loveless was 0-for-4.

Jeremy Gabryszwski (5-3, 3.27) lasted the necessary five innings for the win, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks with only one strikeout. Brady Dragmire struck out two in 1-2/3 innings of one-hit ball. Tim Mayza picked him up by getting the final out of the sixth to strand a runner but was nicked for an unearned run on a walk, a passed ball by Lavarnway and a base hit. Chris Smith decided to kick ass and take names by striking out the side in the eighth and struck out two more to start the ninth before giving up a double. That only pissed him off more as he struck out the final batter looking for the well-earned two-inning save, his second of the year. All of his other whiffs were of the swinging variety.

Dunedin 6 Brevard County 0

Dunedin, FL
- The Jays scored in five of the first six innings to beat the Brewers affiliate. Ryan McBroom doubled home the winning run in the first to score a Richard Urena single. Urena's base hit was the result of the ball hitting J.D. Davis, who started the game with a single. Jorge Saez socked one over the fence and Urena had a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 in the second. A Mike Reeves RBI single in the fourth and back to back doubles by Emilio Guerrero and McBroom completed the scoring in the sixth. McBroom and J.D. Davis had three hits apiece while Saez and Dickie Joe Thon had two each. D.J. Davis drew a walk but L.B. Dantzler was 0-for-4 and Andy Fermin struck out in a pinch-hit appearance. Urena, Reeves and Thon all had stolen bases.

Conner Greene (4-4, 2.69) allowed just five baserunners on three hits and two walks over seven shutout innings. He faced the minimum through five with a base hit erased on a steal attempt of second by Saez. Greene struck out seven and eight of his nine outs in play were handled by the infield. The rehabbing lefty duo of Franklin Morales and Brett Cecil kept the shutout intact with a scoreless frame apiece. Morales walked one and struck out one while Cecil struck out two.

Vancouver 6 Everett 5

Cavan Biggio
had a four-hit night in the leadoff spot and scored the winning run Monday night.

Vancouver, BC
- The C's bounced back from a crushing home opening loss by downing the Mariners affiliate in the second game of their three-game set. It took them 10 innings to score their first run but they broke that goose egg with a four-run outburst in the second. Rodrigo Orozco worked a bases-loaded walk before a Cavan Biggio base hit and error knocked home two more with a base hit. An RBI groundout by Yeltsin Gudino brought home the fourth run and he delivered again in the fourth as his single scored a Biggio double. Biggio would belt an opposite field double to start the seventh and he scampered home on a J.B. Woodman single. Biggio went 4-for-4 on the night and made solid contact each time. D.J. McKnight singled and walked and Jacob Anderson had the other base hit.

Jackson Lowery collected the save by getting the final five outs.

Luis Sanchez put up zeros in the first three innings but gave up three runs in the fourth on a walk, a hit by pitch, a wild pitch, a double and a single. In total, Sanchez surrendered four hits but struck out four and induced six outs on the grass. Dan Lietz (1-0) put up a zero in the fifth but allowed a run in the sixth but his second strikeout left runners stranded at second and third. Evan Smith got through the seventh despite an error and two wild pitches bringing a runner to third but he walked the leadoff man in the eighth before getting an out. Jackson Lowery could not strand that runner when he gave up two singles but he got the final five outs for the save, four of them by strikeout.

DSL Blue Jays 1 DSL Orioles(1) 0 - Suspended due to rain

Boca Chica, DR
- The Blue Jays managed to squeeze in a run in the bottom of the third before the rains came. Yeison Estevez and Jesus Navarro both singled and Estevez scored on an Yorman Rodriguez infield single and error at short. Victor Figuereo also had a base hit.

Maximo Castillo navigated his way around a single and an error in the first and retired the last seven hitters he faced over three shutout innings. He struck out two and recorded six groundball outs.

very promising start by Greene.  If he can put his early season struggles behind him, our pitching depth is really starting to look good with the emergence of Rios, Perdomo's rapid maturation, and Harris proving that his pro struggles last year were likely due to fatigue after all.

so is ryan lavarnway actually our third string catcher?  I can't see us promoting Jiminez barring major injury since we presumably don't want to lose him on waivers.

my sense is that lavarnway's D is solid, his framing slightly below average and if he can get his bat untracked in the bigs, he may not be the worst third stringer.

also, any minor league knucklers we could introduce him to?

that's 3 good starts in a row from Greene now.

6.1ip/gs, 26.0k%, 9.6bb%, 0.95era, 2.24fip

that's more like the top prospect we saw last year.

hopefully it's a corner turned, not a fluke.

nah, lavarnway is just a box office draw for all the red sox fans in new hampshire.

I listened to Greeene's start and the D Jays' play by play guy was saying he was throwing far more offspeed pitches than he had all year. He said most of the year Greene's been almost exclusively throwing his fastball. Curious if they limited his offspeed to help with his command and are now letting him throw his entire arsenal.

Is Lavarnway hitting better than Thole ? Prospecty Jimenez seems to cool off a bit ?

Baseball America says Greene has added a slider in its latest prospect report.

Danny Barnes promoted to Buffalo.

Pitched 2 scoreless innings.
dan gordon - Thursday, June 23 2016 @ 01:49 AM EDT (#325192) #
Barnes put up some great numbers in 2011 and 2012 in Lansing and Dunedin, before running into injury trouble. Great to see him back to producing some outstanding results. His AA numbers this year remind me of the stats Tom Henke compiled in AAA in 1985 before the Jays finally called him up. Barnes could probably help the Jays bullpen right now.
scottt - Thursday, June 23 2016 @ 05:44 AM EDT (#325193) #
Barnes appear to be a reliever in the Storen mold.
He doesn't have high heat and instead rely on a full arsenal of 4 pitches.

As the top strikeout pitcher in the Jays system, we should see him at some point.

Mike Green - Thursday, June 23 2016 @ 09:14 AM EDT (#325198) #
Barnes' stat line might look like Henke's, but that's about it.  He went to Princeton, and throws 4 pitches none of them very hard.  He's an extreme flyball pitcher in the Estrada mold, but without Marco's endurance apparently.
dan gordon - Thursday, June 23 2016 @ 07:39 PM EDT (#325222) #
If Barnes can pitch like Estrada, he's got a good chance to have a big league career. Love the career K/BB ratio of 387/87, about 4.5 K's per walk, the career K/IP of 387/296.6, almost 12 per 9 innings, and the career opponents' BA of .217. He's not on the 40 man, so it could make it less likely he gets a shot with the Jays this year. I hope he makes it, I like rooting for the underdog - 35th round draft pick, and he missed most of 2013 with injury trouble. I saw a 2012 scouting report that said he was 90-92 with his fastball, touching 94 occasionally. Don't know what his velocity is now.
jerjapan - Friday, June 24 2016 @ 12:05 AM EDT (#325224) #
posted a bunch about him on the other thread Dan Gordon.  he sits low-mid 90s right now.
Mike Green - Friday, June 24 2016 @ 08:50 AM EDT (#325225) #
Barnes sounds more like Jeff Montgomery than Tom Henke to me.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Sean Reid-Foley had an interesting shutout 6 innings for Dunedin last night- no walks, 3 strikeouts, 13 ground outs, 3 ground ball hits, one line out and no fly balls whatsoever. It looks like he's learning something.  Two starts in the FSL he hasn't allowed a run in 13 innings with just 5 hits, 3 walks and 15 strikeouts.  That's what you want to see.
